07 December 1859 Married. At St. John's, On Wednesday evening last, by the Venerable Archdeacon Lower, M.A., Mr. John Stidstone, of that place, to Miss Jane, third daughter of Mr. John Moors, of Carbonear.
  Married. At the same place, on Thursday last, by the Rev. J. O'Donnell, Capt. Joseph Clements of Green Bay, to Alice relict of the late Captain James Silvey of that place.
  Married. At the same place, on Saturday last, by the Rev. J. O'Donnell, Mr. Patrick Power, (Branch Pilot, ) to Ellen, second daughter of the late James M'Loughnan, of that place.
  Married. At the same place, on Wednesday evening last, by the Rev. Henry Daniel, Mr. Henry Weeks, of Charlottetown, P.E. Island, to Marrian Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Capt. Burford, of that place.
  Married. At Salmon Cove, Gasters, on the 26th ult., by the Rev. Kyran Walsh, Edward, eldest son of Mr. James Wade, jr., planter at Cat's Cove, to Mary, second daughter of Mr. Edward Flaherty, planter of that place.
  Died. At St. John's, on Thursday last, aged 90 years, John Bryan.
  Died. At the same place, on Saturday last, after a long and painful illness, which he bore with christian (sic) resignation to the Divine Will, Mr. John Coaker, a native of Widdicomb, Devonshire, England, aged 50 years.

14 December 1859

Married. At St. John's, on the 3rd Dec., by the Rev. Henry Daniel, Mr. Robert Woods, to Miss Elizabeth Ann Moor, both of that place.

  Died. At St. John's, on Thursday last, after a long and painful illness borne with Christian resignation to the Divine Will, Ann, third daughter of Mr. James Dooley, of Portugal Cove, aged 21 years.

28 December 1859

Married. On Thursday evening last, at St. Paul's Church, by the Rev. Bertram Jones, Mr. George Andrews, to Mary, relict of the late Mr. Blathwaite Snow, both of this town.

  Died. On Sunday morning the 18th inst., Mr. Thomas French, aged 55 years. An old and respected inhabitant of this town.

04 January 1860

Married. On Monday evening last, by the Rev. Mr. Shenstone, Mr. John Butt, of Western Bay, to Mary, daughter of Mr. Ambrose Parsons of this town.

  Married. At Greenspond, on the 8th December, by the Rev. Julian Moreton, George Skelton, Esq., M.D., of Bonavista, to Lucy Hester, fourth daughter of Mr. Richard Wills, of St. John's.
  Died. At St. John's, after a long and severe illness in the 62nd year of her age, Elizabeth, relict of the late Mr. John Currie, of Harbour Grace.
  Died. At same place, after a long and painful illness, in the 31st year of her age, Hannah, the beloved wife of Mr. Benjamin Wood.
  Died. At same place, aged 5 years, Rachael Ann, youngest daughter of Mr. Christopher Vey.
 

Died. At Toad's Cove, after a tedious illness, borne with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Mr. Samuel Driscol, deeply regretted by a large circle of relatives and friends.

  Died. At St. Mary's, Mr. Michael Murray, an old and respectable inhabitant of that place, aged 84 years.
  Died. At Liverpool, in October last, of fever, Mr. Frederick Stoneman, fourth son of the late William Stoneman, Esq.
11 January 1860 Married. On Thursday evening last, by the Rev. W. E. Shenstone, Mr. Richard T. Pike, to Miss Catherine Andrews, both of this town.
  Died. At the same place, at his residence River Head, on Wednesday the 4th inst., Captain Denis Mealy, an old and respectable inhabitant of that town.
  Died. At St. Mary's, on the 10th instant, Mr. Michael Murray, an old and respectable inhabitant of that place, aged 84 years.

25 January 1860

Married. At Carbonear, on Thursday the 5th inst., at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. C. Lockhart, Captain F. Pike, eldest son of Edward J. Pike, Esq., to Charlotte Maria, second daughter of John Thompson, Esq., M.D., formerly of Hull, England.
  Married. On the 5th inst., at St. John's, by the Rev. J. O'Donnell, Mr. James Morrissey, a native of Newfoundland, to Miss Margaret McManus, a native of Paisley, Scotland.
  Died. On Sunday night last, after a short illness, Robert M'Nab, a native of River John, Nova Scotia, aged about 20 years. The deceased was a young man generally respected in this town.
  Died. At St. John's, on Thursday morning last, William Murdock, fourth son of Mr. P. McPherson, aged 14 months.
01 February 1860 Married. On Thursday evening last, by the Rev. B. Jones, Mr. Charles Braker, to Miss Rachael Martin, both of this town.
  Died. On Sunday morning last, after a short illness, Mr. Thomas Ryan, much and deservedly regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
  Died. At Brigus, on Monday the 16th January, after a lingering illness, borne with truly Christian fortitude, Mary, the beloved wife of Mr. James Tarahan, and daughter of the late Mr. M. Scanlan of St. John's, much and deservedly regretted by all who knew her.
  Died. At St. John's, on the 21st inst., James Clift, Esq., in the 64th year of his age, fifty of which he has resided in this Colony, born in the Parish of Smithwick, near Birmingham England.
  Died. At the same place, on Friday the 27th Jan., after a lingering illness, Mr. Walter Shelly, aged 77 years, much and deservedly regretted by all who knew him.
08 February 1860 Died. At St. John's, on the 31st Jan., Mary Ann, aged 44 years, the beloved wife of Mr. John Cole.
  Died. At St. Leonard's, Barbadoes (sic), on the 15th December in her 23rd year, Sophia Mary Julia, the beloved wife of John R. Pitcher, Esq., and eldest daughter of George Winter, Esq.

15 February 1860

Married. On Thursday evening last, by the Rev. J. Walsh, Mr. James Foster of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, to Ellen Mary, only daughter of the late William Dixon, of this town.
22 February 1860

Married. At St. Paul's Church, on Thursday last, by the Rev. Bertram Jones, Mr. John Payne, to Hamutal, daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Davis, both of this time.

  Died. At St. John's on Sunday, the 5th inst. After a short and painful illness, Ellen, third daughter of Mr. Edward Norris, aged 16 years.
  Died. At the same place on Tuesday sen'night (sic) last, Isabella Jane, fourth daughter of Mr. George Whitten, South Side, age 20 years.
  Died. At the same place on Tuesday, sen'night (sic), after a short but painful illness, borne with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Mr. Michael Maher, aged 30 years, much and deservedly regretted by all who knew him. He leaves a young widow and one child to mourn their loss
  Died. At the same place after a short illness, Alexander Harvey, infant son of Mr. R. Peace, aged 4 1-2 months.
  Died. At St. Dunstan's College, Charlottown (sic) Royalty, on the 30th ult., after a long and lingering illness, in the 66th year of his age, the Right Rev. Bernard Donald MacDonald, Roman Catholic Bishop of Prince Edwards Island - universally respected.
  Died. At Brooklyn, New York, on the 31st January, of consumption, Charles Percy, eldest son of Daniel H. And Helena Craig, aged 19 years and 3 months.
29 February 1860 Died. At Carbonear, on yesterday the 28th instant, Robert Pack, Esquire, aged 74 years. The deceased was a native of Poole, England, and resided in this Colony upwards of Sixty years.
During the past fifty years he was the principal of one of our leading Mercantile Establishments, and few Merchants ever stood higher for honor, integrity and generosity. He was greatly beloved and esteemed in all the relations of his life, as a husband, father and friend, and leaves to mourn a widow, children, and grand-children to lament their heavy loss. His name will ever be revered by all who had the privilege of his acquaintance in this and other countries, for all those qualities that adorn the upright British Merchant and exemplary pious citizen.
03 March 1860 Married. At Bourlarderi, C.B., on the 19th January last, by the Rev. J. Fraser, Capt. Donald Matheson to Margaret, daughter of Finlay M'Rae, late of the 71st Regiment.
  Married. At Brigus, on Tuesday, 24th Jan., by the Rev. Mr. Shannon, Captain William Wilcox, to Elizabeth, second daughter of Mr. William Antle, all of Brigus.
  Married. At Burin on the 19th January, by the Rev. J. Cullen, P.P., Mr. Patrick O'Neil, son of John O'Neil, Esq., J.P., to Monica, second daughter of Clement Benning, Esq., J.P.
  Died. On Tuesday the 18th ult., William Tapp, of Cape Ray. Deceased left Channel for Cape Ray that morning apparently in good health and was found a corpse on the ice the same evening a few hundred yards from his house. He was a native of Dorset, England, and for 50 or 60 years a resident of Cape Ray and Cod Roy, he has left a large family to deplore his loss.
  CORONER'S INQUEST - On Monday last, a Coroner's Inquest was held, at the Police Station House in thsi town, before John Stark, Esq., and a Coroner's Jury of which Captain George Hartery was elected foreman, on view of the body of Charles Lambert, said to be a native of Jersey, about forty-five years of age. The deceased had within a few days given way to drinking, and in a sad state was conveyed on Saturday evening last to the Station House, when soon after his arrival he breathed his last. Doctor Allan was sent for, but he was dead before the Doctor reached him. - Verdict found dead - his remains were interred in the Established Church Yar, under warrant from the Coroner.
No marks of any violence appeared on the body.
  CORONER'S INQUEST - An inquest was held at Black Head Bay on Monday last, on view of the body of William Keefe, a lad of about 16 years of age. It appeared that deceased and another boy named John Power returned home from town in a boat on Saturday evening; that shortly after landing, some altercation took place between the boys, and that Power who was the less robust, took up a beach-stone, and as Keefe approached to strike him, hit him (Keefe) on the head with it. Keefe soon after went home, but in the course of the evening was sick at the stomach; he became gradually heavier, and died about 6 o'clock on Sunday morning. The inquiry ended in a verdict of Manslaughter against Power, who is committed to prison.
14 March 1860 Married. At Carbonear, on the 28th ult., by the Rev. Mr. Lockhart, Mr. Richard Howard, to Miss Louisa Moors, both of this town.
  Married. At Brigus on the 1st inst., by the Rev. Mr. Shannon, Joseph C. Simms, Esq., fourth son of George Simms, Esq. , J.P., of Trepassey, to Emma Selina, youngest daughter of the late Abraham Bartlett, Esq.

There are no marriages or deaths from 14 March to 23 May 1860.

23 May 1860 Married. At St. John's, 5th inst., by the Rev. Henry Daniel, Capt. Mark Verge, to Miss Susannah Fornham, both of St. John's.
  Married. 16th ult., at New Park-street Chapel, Southwark, by the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, Robert Livingstone Muir, of St. John's, Newfoundland, to Sarah, youngest daughter of the late George Peel, Esq., of London.
  Married. At Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on the 22nd Dec. Last, Stanislaus James Bayly, Esq., Barrister-at-Law, of Belfast, Port Fairy, to Emily Drew, late of Exeter, Devon.
  Died. On Friday last, after a lingering illness which she bore with Christian fortitude, Sarah Susannah, daughter of Mr. William Sparkes, of this town, aged 26 years.
  Died. On Saturday the 12 inst., aged 5 years 2 months, Evelene, daughter of Captain G. Brown.
  Died. At St. John's, 10th inst., of whooping cough, Emma Jessie, daughter of Mr. William Pitts, aged 12 months.
30 May 1860 Died. At St. John's, the 14th inst., after a long illness, William Thomas, infant son of George J. Hogsett, Attorney General.
  Died. At same place, 21st inst., Catherine Ellen, infant daughter of Mr. Polydore Barnes.
 

Died. On the 15th inst., after a lingering illness, Michael Murphy, aged 62 years, leaving a wife and large circle of friends to mourn their loss.

06 June 1860 Birth. On the 15th ult., Mrs. J. R. Fisher of a daughter.
  Died. At St. John's, on the 24th ultimo, after a long protracted illness, which she bore with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Sarah Kingwell, relict of the late Mr. John Spry, aged 96 years.
13 June 1860 Died. Yesterday morning, after a long and lingering illness, borne with christian resignation to the Divine Will, Mr. John Dooling, aged 22 years. His funeral will take place from his Mother's residence, Water Street, when the friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend.
  Died. At St. John's, on the 2nd inst., Margaret, the beloved wife of Mr. John Sheehan, aged 28 years.
20 June 1860 Married. In St. Paul's Church, Trinity, on the 2nd instant, by the Rev. Benjamin Smith, Alexander W. Bremner, Esq., to Miss Tryphena, second daughter of B. Sweetland, Esq., Stipendiary Magistrate of Trinity.
  Died. At Spaniard's Bay, on the 16th inst., after a lingering illness of four months, Abigail, wife of Mr. William Gosse, and Daughter-in-law of Mr. Moses Gosse, aged 43 years, leaving a large family to deplore her loss.
  Died. At St. John's, on Sunday evening last, after a short illness, much and deservedly regretted by all who knew him, Mr. Richard Field, of the firm of Geran & Field, aged 26 years.
27 June 1860 Married. On Thursday last, at the Wesleyan Parsonage, by the Bride's Father, the Rev. F. Woods, B.A., of South Hadley Falls, Mass., to Sarah H., daughter of the Rev. W. E. Shenstone, of this town.
  Married. At St. John's, on Tuesday the 19th inst., at the Cathedral Church, by the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop, assisted by the Ven. the Archdeacon, William James Ward, Esq., Notary Public, Editor of the Morning Post, to Anna Maria Webster Ward, daughter of the late James Ward, Esq., of Portsmouth, H.H., U.S.A.
  Married. At Burin, by the Rev. John S. Phinney, W.M., Mr. Thomas Keech, of Bristol, England, to Mary Ann, daughter of Mr. George Goddard, of Spoon Cove, Burin.
  Married. At Halifax, N.S., on Saturday, May 28, by the Rev. T. Crisp, Mr. Charles DeCean, of Jersey, to Miss Mary L., daughter of the late Michael G. Power, of St. John's, Nfld.
  Married, at the above place, at St. Mary's Cathedral, June 4, by the Rev. Dr. Haman, Mr. Richard F. Ford, to Miss Margaret Knowlan, both of Newfoundland.
  Died. On Saturday evening last, Robert Norman, infant son of Capt. John Munn.
  Died. At St. John's, the 17th inst., after a very short illness, Frances Maria, the beloved wife of the Rev. George M. Johnson.
  Died. At the same place on the 21st inst., Robert Ollerhead, fourth son of John Canning, Esq., Her Majesty's Customs, aged 22 years.
04 July 1860 Died. On Saturday the 30th ult., at St. John's, after a short illness, Patrick Tasker, fifth son of Mr. G. G. Geddes, aged 7 years and 4 months.
  Died. On the 2nd inst., Andrew Morrison, youngest son of Mr. G. G. Geddes, aged 5 years and 6 months.
11 July 1860 Married. At St. Thomas's Church, St. John's, on the 5th inst., by the Rev. Reginald Malcolmn (sic) Johnston, Garland Crawford Gaden, Esq., Sheriff of the Northern District, to Matilda Susan, relict of the late David C. Noble, Esq., of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and only daughter of the late Captain Smith Parker, of the 64th regiment.
  Died. In London, on the 29th May, deeply regretted, Hugh Alexander Emerson, Esq., late Solicitor General of this Colony.
  Any persons having claims against the estate of the late Robert Pack, of Carbonear, Merchant, are requested to furnish the same to the Subscribers, and all persons indebted to the said estate are requested forthwith to make immediate payment to

Wix, some time Archdeacon of Newfoundland, and grandson of the Rev. S. Wix, vicar and hospitaller of St. Bartholomew-the-less, London, and rector of Inworth, Essex, to Catherine, youngest daughter of the late William Abbel, Esq., of Jamaca (sic).
  Died. At the residence of her Father, Capt. John Stephenson, after a short illness, regretted by all who knew her, Susanna Gordon, relict of the late Capt. Wm. Gordan (sic) - Aged 30 years.
08 August 1860 Died. At St. John's on Thursday last, after a short illness, in the 13th year of her age, Martha Corbett, eldest daughter of Mr. Joseph Woods.

Birth. At "Head Quarters," on Monday last, the 20th instant, the wife of Mr. John Hayward of a Son.

05 September 1860 Died. On Sunday last, Albert Edward, infant son of John Hayward, Esq.
  Died. At Carbonear on the 5th instant, Mary relict of the late Capt. John Taylor, aged 69 years, much and deservedly regretted.

Married. At Bay Roberts, on the 14th inst., by the Rev. W. E. Shenstone, John W. R. Thompson, Esq., Electric Telegraph Operator, to Miss Louisa Ann, eldest daughter of Mr. John Ellis Pike, all of Carbonear.

26 September 1860 Died. Yesterday, after a lingering illness, Mr. Maurice Shea, aged 22 years.
10 October 1860 Died. At St. John's, on the 11th inst, after a short but painful illness, William, oldest son of Mr. Thomas Coyell, aged 47 years, leaving a widow and large family, together with many sorrowing friends to mourn their irreparable loss.
  Died. At same place, on the 11th inst, after a short illness, Margaret, second daughter of Mr. Alexander Smith, in the 14th year of her age.
17 October 1860 Married. Yesterday, at Carbonear, by the Rev. W. J. Hoyles, Alfred P. Ham, Esq., to Lavinia Seager, second daughter of the late Robert Ayles, Esq. Of Carbonear.
24 October 1860 Died. At St. John's, on Monday last, Bridget, daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Parker, aged 19 years.
  Died. At same place, on Tuesday, after a short illness, Mr. William Earle, a native of Dartmouth, for 47 years Clerk of St. John's Church, deeply regretted, aged 69 years.
31 October 1860 Birth. At St. John's, 18th inst., Mrs. Woodley Prowse, of a son.
07 November 1860 Died. Yesterday morning, after a long illness, which he bore with truely (sic) Christian fortitude to the Divine will, Mr. Robert Lee Whiting, an old and highly respected inhabitant of this town. He has left a large family to deplore his loss. The deceased was a good neighbour, a kind father, and one who never shut his door to the call of charity.
  Died. At St. John's, Nov. 9, after a short illness, John J. Geran, Esq., late M.H.A., and eldest son of the late Capt. Laurence Geran, aged 29 years.
21 November 1860 Married. On Sunday the 11th inst., at Bay Bulls by the Very Rev. Dean Cleary, James Tarahan, Esq., of Brigus, to Mary, eldest daughter of Martin Williams, Esq., of Bay Bulls.
  Died. On Thursday last, Frances, beloved wife of Mr. William Harkness, aged 28 years, deservedly regretted by all who knew her.
  Died. At Old Perlican on Tuesday the 23rd October, after a short but severe illness, deeply regretted by a large circle of friends, Rev. Thomas Gaetz, Wesleyan Minister, aged 30 years.
  Died. At St. John's, on the 11th inst., after a short illness, Amelia, relict of the late Edward Kielley, Esq., M.D., aged 65 years.
28 November 1860 Birth. On the 15th August, at the Parsonage, Paterson, New South Wales, the wife of the Rev. Charles Walsh, of a Son.
  Married. Last evening, by the Rev. Mr. Walsh, Mr. John Walsh, to Margaret, second daughter of Mr. Patrick Butler.
  Married. At Heart's Content, on the 10th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Petley, Mr. Levi Williams of Harbour Grace, to Emma, daughter of Adam Rockwood, Esq.
05 December 1860 Died. Yesterday morning after a long illness, Mr. Mathias O'Neil, a respectable inhabitant of this town.
12 December 1860 Died. At Carbonear, much and deservedly regretted, after a lingering illness, which she born with truly Christian Resignation to the Divine will, Mary, the beloved wife of Mr. Wm. Brown, and mother of the Rev. James Brown of Bonavista, aged 59 years. Her end was peace.
  Died. At St. John's, on Wednesday morning, Francis Dighton, fourth son of the Rev. P. G. Dickinson, aged 39 years.
