CAMPBELL (Pearcey), Dorothy Ann -- Kentville
Published: March 31, 2022
In loving memory of Dorothy Ann Campbell, March 3, 1941 - March 26, 2022. The family of Dorothy Ann (Pearcey) Campbell, age 81, of Kentville, are saddened to announce her passing on Saturday, March 26, 2022 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in St. John's, N.L., she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Enid (MacGillvary) Piercey and married for 60 years to T. Conrad Campbell.

Dorothy had a career with Scotiabank that spanned over 35 years, dedicating a total of 38 years in banking. She was a member of the Kentville Lioness Club for several years, and following her retirement from the bank, she volunteered at Valley Regional Hospital. Dorothy had a love for travel, including trips away with family and times spent with good friends. She cherished every moment with the people close to her; visits with family from Alberta, scenic drives around the Shore, or Sunday dinners with all the crowd. She loved any reason to get together or dine at a great restaurant. In recent years, her great grandson has been a shining light in her life. He would take such great care of his "Nan" and she loved spending time with him.

Dorothy can best be remembered for her laughter and sense of humor. She has given us a lifetime of wonderful memories and will forever be in our hearts. She was loved by her family and friends and will be missed dearly. Dorothy is survived by her husband, T. Conrad "Con" Campbell; son, Stephen (Sharon) Campbell, Cochrane, Alta.; and daughter, Pam White, Kentville; grandchildren, Ryan (Cassidy) Gould and Amanda (Isaiah) Hatt Gould; step-grandchildren, Alyssa Hopkins and Liam Hopkins and Cody and Tyler White; great-grandson, Brayden Hatt Gould; brother, David (Sharon) Pearcey, Prince Edward Island; sisters-in-law, Arvella (Ron) Tilley and Darlene Rideout; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, David White (of Kentville); sister-in-law, Barbara Campbell; brother-in-law, Weldon Rideout; niece, Tammy and nephew, Michael. A special thank you to the Dialysis Unit Staff for providing such great care these past few years. Their kindness is greatly appreciated.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dorothy's life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line condolences and inquiries may be directed to: www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com

FARDY, Gerard J. "Darce" -- Halifax
Published: March 14, 2022
Darce Fardy
, 89, died the way he lived - with dignity - on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at home in Halifax. He left this life surrounded by his loving family, at the time and place of his own choosing, and fully at peace. But only after a toast, a Manhattan, a laugh, a cry, and a rousing chorus of Ode to Newfoundland. We should all have such great fortune. He was born May 15, 1932, in St. John's, N.L. His given name was Gerard, but no one ever called him that. Nor does anyone know where "Darce" came from. When pressed, he would recite his full name as "Gerard James Robert Irish-Nick Cooper-Conn Aloysius Gonzaga RumbiaFardy". "Darce" it was, then.

After attending and (by some accounts) graduating from St. Bonaventure College (St. Bon's) he ascended from the role of senior altar boy at the Basilica and, lacking more compelling prospects, packed it off to upstate New York to join the Order of the Irish Christian Brothers. Demonstrating limited creative range, he took the name "Bonaventure". His proclivity for irreverence, humour and mischief was sufficiently disruptive to see him soon spirited away in the middle of the night and put on the train back home. That signalled the end of both Brother Bonaventure and his vows of "Poverty, Chastity and Obedience", for which his future spouse and offspring remain eternally grateful (especially with respect to the first two).

Undeterred by this unceremonious defrocking, he fell into a job at the fledgling Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in St. John's, only three years after anything in Newfoundland was labelled "Canadian". There, he worked his way through the newsroom and soon became the first national news reporter for the CBC Television in the tenth province. His was the voice of Newfoundland to the rest of Canada, reporting on any and all matters of provincial or national import. Prime Minister John Diefenbaker once pronounced "all I hear of Newfoundland comes from my good friend Darce Fardy".

In 1954, Darce was introduced to 17-year-old Dorothea Jean Neary of Portugal Cove by a mutual friend. His dogged, if sometimes awkward, pursuit eventually bore fruit when she agreed to marry him in 1958. Reflective of his pledge to keep Dorothea "in the lifestyle to which she had become accustomed", the published wedding announcement reported that "Mr. and Mrs. Fardy will be spending their honeymoon on a "driving holiday." And off they were to Makinsons (pop. Circa 450), an hour's drive west.

Darce's career with the CBC led him into increasingly interesting and challenging roles, including a stint at the United Nations in New York, in the newsroom in Edmonton, as Director of Television in St. John's and Halifax and eventually to network HQ in Toronto where he served as Head of Current Affairs, overseeing programs such as The Journal, The Fifth Estate, and Marketplace (to name a few) as well as all documentary productions, including many international award winners. He loved every job he had at the CBC, and retired in 1991.

For a period during his CBC career, Darce also served part-time in the reserves as a Naval Lieutenant. Maritime Command must have never felt so vulnerable. In 1979-80 he was chosen to attend the National Defence College, based in Kingston, Ont., for a year of geo-political globe-trotting with 50 other Canadian military officers and civilian leaders strapped into a RCAF Hercules transport aircraft. They visited six continents, meeting with government leaders from dozens of countries. Darce saw retirement as a word, not a state of being. He therefore accepted an appointment as the first Review Officer overseeing the Nova Scotia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, where he drew both admiration and ire from elected officials and senior public servants, depending on whether they were the requestors or requestees of government-held information. He served in that role for 11 years, "re-retiring" in 2007.

Still not prepared to step fully back, he founded the Nova Scotia Right to Know Coalition, an advocacy not-for-profit, which he ran from his home office, between the chest freezer and furnace in the basement, for several years. In 2013 Darce was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal, in recognition for his commitment and contribution to public access to information. As someone who lived off the public purse his whole life, it seemed a delicious irony that he was nominated for this honour by the Canadian Taxpayer's Federation. A compliment if there ever was one.

Darce was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2013. To his credit, he immediately (and voluntarily) turned in his car keys and decided, as a former journalist, to share his story of living with dementia through a semi-regular column in the Halifax Chronicle Herald. Thankfully, the disease progressed slowly enough that he was able to write the column, with increasing doses of intervention from editor-in-chief Dorothea, for many years. Countless friends and strangers commented on how much they appreciated this effort to both de-stigmatize the disease and give others dealing with it some comfort.

Darce was predeceased by his parents, Hugh James Fardy and Mary (Doody) Fardy; older brothers, Hugh, Frank and Paul; older sister, Margaret O'Brien and his younger sister and favourite, Mary. It was left to him to turn out the lights as the last Fardy sibling to leave the party. He also lost his son-in-law, Donnie MacInnes, in 2010. He is survived by his loving and medal-deserving wife of 63 years, Dorothea, who claims the secret to their long marriage was a husband who was away a lot. He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Sheila and Donna; son, Peter (Carol), who, as children, could hardly contain themselves at the breakfast table in anticipation of their dad saying goodbye, pretending to miss the kitchen doorway, and walking into the wall. He did not disappoint. Darce is also survived by six grandchildren of whom he was very proud and from whom he took great joy: Gabrielle and Patrick Emilien, Amber and David Fardy, and Seamus and Molly MacInnes. As Grandad, he took tremendous interest in their many academic, athletic, professional and extra-curricular pursuits.

A celebration of Darce's splendid life will be held at a later date when we can party like he would want us to (less than six feet apart). The family suggests that donations in Darce's memory, for those inclined, may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or to support Alzheimer's research at Dalhousie University. Memories and condolences may be shared online at https://everloved.com/life-of/gerard-darce-fardy/ (or go to everloved.com and search for "Fardy").

STEELE , J. Catherine (Thornhill) -- St. John's, N.L.
Published: March 09, 2022
April 30, 1930 - March 6, 2022
Our beloved Catherine peacefully passed away in Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence, St. John's, N.L., on Sunday, March 6, 2022. Catherine was born in Grand Bank, N.L., the cherished wife of Harry Steele and daughter of the late Captain Arch and Ruth (Williams) Thornhill. Leaving to mourn her loss are her proud sons, Peter (Brenda), Rob and John (Darlene); grandchildren, Kate (Jeff Robb), Diana, Laura (Colin Kaiser), Hayley, Eric, Wyatt and Sofia; and great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Lauchlan Kaiser. Also survived by her sister, Florence (Thornhill) Dobson; and brother, Roland J. Thornhill (Bonnie); nephews, Barry and David Dobson, Christopher and Jeff Thornhill, Paul and Andrew Thornhill and Geoff Tulk. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Steele; brother, Cyril Thornhill; sister-in-law, Sylvia (Mercer) Thornhill; sister-in-law, Audrey (Steele) Tulk; brother-in-law, Kenneth Tulk; and niece, Marguerite (Tulk) Leyte.

At age 10 Catherine's father gave her a gift that would change the course of her life forever. He surprised her with a piano he had purchased with a load of fish from one of his fishing trips on the Grand Banks. She began to take piano lessons and soon decided she wanted to be a music teacher. She was a gifted musician who also learned to play the violin by ear. Music was something that she would take with her throughout her life, saying that having music in your life was like having a good friend. She graduated from Mount Allision University Sackville, N.B. with her Music Degree and moved to St. John's, NL to teach at Prince of Wales Collegiate. She loved teaching and she loved the children, and often said that every child taught her something different. Her caring, nurturing personality and passion for music made her the perfect music teacher whom many children fondly remember to this day.

It was during this time that she met the love of her life - Harry. He was in the Navy and after a brief courtship, he left to go to sea and they didn't speak or see each other for a full year. When he arrived home they married on June 9, 1954 on Harry's birthday. Shortly after that time Harry was transferred to England and Catherine found herself living "overseas", a time in her life that she thoroughly enjoyed. They then moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where sons Peter and Robert were born, and although Catherine was enjoying being a Mom, she also began to get in to the real estate business by purchasing distressed properties, renovating them and then selling them, something she was quite good at. When Harry was then transferred to Washington, D.C., their son John was born, and soon the Mother of three boys was busy entertaining and hosting parties with military dignitaries and guests.

The next destination was back to their beloved province of Newfoundland, moving to Gander where Harry and Catherine purchased the Albatross Motel. Once again Catherine proved herself as a successful businesswoman as she helped transform the Albatross into a thriving hotel. Catherine was well-respected by staff and patrons, and always treated people with kindness and fairness. Catherine had a true gift for making everyone around her feel special, welcome and listened to. She was an extremely thoughtful person who did so much to help people, all the while quietly staying in the background. But she was a strong, determined, ambitious woman who was a fighter to the very end.

She loved spending time with her "Kaegudeck Travellers" friend group whom she travelled all over the globe with, but found their most special trip right here in Newfoundland. She treasured visits with her family, and she always made time for a good chat with those she loved and those whom she had just met. She was a smart dresser who had a true eye for fashion. During the last few years in Kenny's Pond she often shared stories, jokes and spread a lot of joy to residents and staff through her piano playing. Her compassion for all those who met her along her life's journey will never be forgotten. She was the epidemy of grace and the embodiment of goodness. She truly was a great woman who left a beautiful mark on this world. Special thanks are extended to the many people who provided care and friendship over the past four years while she was a resident at Kenny's Pond Retirement Community.

Services to honor the life of Catherine Steele will be held at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Cathedral of St. John's the Baptist Music or Choral Scholarship Fund at: ourcathedral.ca/giving Online condolences may be made at: www.carnells.com
