DOLLARD, William "Brent"
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, June 24, 2020

It is with great sadness and the heaviest of hearts that the Dollard family announces the sudden passing of Brent Dollard. Brent, age 56, passed away after a short illness on June 19, 2020, surrounded by loving family members. Brent was born in Stephenville, N.L., on October 28, 1963 to Ignatius Dollard and Edna (Doucette), both deceased. After graduating high school, Brent moved to Toronto to become an electrical engineer. After working in Toronto for many years he moved to Halifax to start up the Atlantic Canada Branch of the international company, Omron. He remained with Omron until they moved their head office to the United States and closed out the Canadian distributors. He then started Hitek Marketing, Inc. Brent lived and worked in Halifax for the last 32 years but his heart was in Newfoundland and Labrador where he would return many times a year to visit friends and family, golf, and go snowmobiling with his brother, Terry. His love of lobster and scallops was legendary and he made a mean seafood chowder.

Brent only had to walk into a room and his smile and laugh became contagious. There was no sitting around a table without laughter. His gentle and loving spirit and great sense of humour are what has endeared him to all who knew and loved him. There are no words to describe how his presence will be missed on this earth. He was cherished by many. Father to Cindy and "great hockey Dad" to Matthew; grandfather to two beautiful granddaughters, Debra and Kassidy; and fiancé to Wanda Dixon; loving brother to Norma Laflamme (Mario), Maureen Dollard, Terry Dollard (Cynthia), Glenda Fortuna (Lou), and Wanda Dollard (Mike Coles); and loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, Justin, Mikey, Jordan, Jeremy, Caitlin, Simone, Brandon and Kendall. His aunt, Millie and cousin, Maureen Taylor, held a very big space in his heart. There are many aunts and uncles and cousins on both the Dollard and Doucette side, as well as friends throughout Canada, whose life Brent has graced and who will miss him dearly.

There will be a service in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, by invitation only on Saturday, June 27th at 2 p.m. The ceremony will be available virtually as well by using the following link: https://funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/15344/wait   In lieu of flowers make someone smile today. That's what Brent would have wanted. A Celebration of Life will be held in Stephenville, N.L., at a future date to be determined. LAWRENCE, Samuel "Sam"

Age 75, Canso. It is with an aching but loving heart that we let our darling Sam return to his heavenly home. Sam was born in Harbour Breton, N.L., grew up in St. Jacques and made his way to Canso as a young man to work with his father, Simeon Lawrence. Sam battled with cancer for three and a half years. He passed peacefully with his family on the evening of June 13, 2020.

Sam is fondly remembered in the community. He was friendly, had a bright smile, and would have a good chat with everyone in town. Sam was a red seal as a machinist and millwright. He owned his own machine shop in Canso for many years. In his 50's, Sam went back to school and became a 2nd class marine engineer. O'DRISCOLL, Michael Donald "Don"
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, June 22, 2020

Age 86, Halifax, passed away peacefully in Parkstone Enhanced Care on June 19, 2020 surrounded by his children. Born in Bay Bulls, N.L., he was the son of the late Harry O'Driscoll and Bridget O'Driscoll (Drew). He was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife Effie, of 57 years; and his infant son, David. Don is survived by his children, Karen, Halifax; Sheilagh (Eduardo), Burlington; Mark, Montreal; Robert (Shari), Smiths Falls; grandchildren, Katie, Nick, Megan and Jacob; brother, Kevin, Bay Bulls, N.L.; and sisters, Ita Carter of Witless Bay, N.L.; Patsy Williams of The Goulds, N.L.; Alverna Simpson of Rothesay, N.B.; and Winnie Nickerson of Halifax.

Don and Effie were also close with Effie's sisters, Hannah Smith, and Mona Gillespie of St. John's, N.L., and many nieces and nephews (whom he also cherished and was delighted when one - or better several - could join our family for a Sunday dinner; he loved to hear the adventures of the younger generation trying to make their way in the world - he was a valued mentor in these conversations).

Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in recent years. Our family is forever grateful to Don's son Rob and wife Shari for giving Don the best possible love and care during his early to mid stages of dementia. Don was born on October 4, 1933 in Bay Bulls, N.L. He was the oldest of seven children, attended Memorial University and began his 38-year career with Imperial Oil (Esso) in 1951. Don started in the mail room in St. John's, was promoted through numerous roles in sales and marketing, was transferred around the Atlantic provinces, finishing his successful career in 1990 as Regional Sales Manager, Atlantic.

Don met the love of his life, Effie, in St. John's, and they married in 1959. They were a true example of people who were meant to be together, who fell in love and stayed in love. The two were devout Catholics and made helping others a priority. Dad continued to use his extensive business acumen to successfully fundraise for local and global causes in his retirement - he was the United Way Representative for Esso as well as leading fundraising for Father Francis in Africa and Kim Harper's Christian Orphanage in the Philippines. Don was the President of the Saint Lawrence Parish Council, and a respected business leader who was endlessly generous with his time and business acumen; he was a strong collaborator to ensuring the financial health of Saint Lawrence Parish, its eventual sale and the subsequent construction of Saint Benedict Parish. Don was also an active member of The Knights of Columbus, and he was delighted to support Effie as she taught English as a second language to adults bringing their families to Canada, and they were leaders in the Alpha Program.

Effie and Don loved to travel and spend time with immediate and extended family. Whether it was Florida (we children and grandchildren often joined them there), the annual summer trip to Newfoundland (Bay Bulls and Branch were highlights of our childhood that endure to this day) or international travel to Spain/Portugal, ski vacations and numerous cruises with Mark and Jacob. Don was well-known as an articulate, handsome and engaging gentleman, and enjoyed his life-long friendships - Brian Maloney and Don spent many summer days at Ashburn Golf Club. Len Coughlan, Andy Power, Carl Brown, and Archie Mills were treasured friends. Don was a man who made time for others, who valued others, was quick with a smile and a kind word. He delighted in making friends of strangers. He was a wonderful father, husband and citizen of the world - he made our world better for what he instilled in us - we are forever grateful to have had him in our lives for the time we did - we only wish it could have been longer and the last years not have been so profoundly impacted by his dementia - though in a testament to Don he maintained his dignity and gentlemanliness though-out his entire life. We are sincerely grateful for our Dad receiving the best of loving care from the nursing staff on Point Pleasant Way at Parkstone. In lieu of flowers. donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. A Celebration of Don's life will be held when circumstances allow. Condolences can be made online at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com

POOLE, James "Jim"
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, June 8, 2020

Age 73, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 5, 2020, following complications from surgery. Born in Harbour Breton, N.L., he was a son of the late Ernest "Jack" and Hazel (Evans) Poole. His family left Newfoundland for Nova Scotia when he was a child, and Nova Scotia became his forever home. He attended Saint Mary's University in the late 1960s, getting degrees in both Arts and Education. It was while he was studying at Saint Mary's that he met the love of his life, Lynn (Leslie), at a traffic light in Halifax. This chance encounter resulted in a shared life and enduring love of more than 52 years. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Janelle, they moved to the small rural community of Middle Musquodoboit, where they both began teaching at local schools. In 1972 they took a leap and bought a small farm nearby, shortly after the birth of their son, Chris. This farm, which grew significantly in scope over the years, would become one of the cornerstones of who Jim Poole was. He became interested in purebred Shorthorn cattle and breeding and selling his own herd, which he did for more than 40 years. He remained active in the Shorthorn community, showing cattle at exhibitions across the province, as well as serving as president of the Canadian Shorthorn Association in the 1980s. Jim and his family also ran a large commercial hog operation on the farm for many years.

Needless to say, his work ethic was top notch; during the 32 years that Jim worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor at Musquodoboit Rural High School, his evenings and weekends were filled with farm responsibilities, from fencing to tending to livestock to fixing whatever had broken along the way. He was renowned (in the family) for his creative use of profanity during annual hay-making season, when every piece of machinery had to break at least once a cycle.

Jim was an active member of the Musquodoboit Valley community. In the 1980s, he took part in local theater productions, as well as directing and/or producing several high school plays. He was a member of the Lions Club for 15 years, where among other projects, he ran bingo for seniors. In his retirement years, he and Lynn spent most Monday mornings as part of a group singing at the Braeside Retirement Home, as well as in the church choir. Jim had a curious mindset and loved to travel and explore new places. He and Lynn had many adventures across Europe, the Caribbean, and North America, including a number of cruises with great friends. His last trip was a family vacation in Mexico in March - an incredible surprise for Jim and Lynn when both their children and their spouses joined them on their trip, creating wonderful memories. Jim had a rich sense of humor and loved to poke fun in a good-natured way.

He loved his family fiercely and was a very proud father, grandfather and husband. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Janelle (Darek), Seattle; son, Chris (Natalie), Lantz; and grandchildren, Kayla and Tyler, Lantz. He was predeceased by his brother, Ernie. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a service will be held for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's name may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation. For online condolences, please visit: www.arimatheafuneral.ca
