BUTLER, Ruth Marie (Pike)
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, July 31, 2020

Of Halifax passed away peacefully just a few days before her 93rd birthday. She was born in St. John's, N.L. to Augustus and Hilda Pike. Ruth made her home in Halifax, after marrying the love of her life, Gerald "Gerry" Butler, in 1956. They have been sweethearts for over 74 years. To say Ruth was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend doesn't do justice to this incredible woman. She was adored. Her legacy is the loving home she created with Gerry and the strong, independent, and compassionate children and grandchildren she helped to raise. Her "youngsters" and her husband were her world. Ruth had a large circle of loyal and loving friends, many of whom she met at Rockingham United Church, where she gave much of her time and energy over the last several decades.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Gerry; daughter, Pamela Collier (Chris); son, Paul Butler (Molly); granddaughters, Malorie Stoddard (Adam), Melissa MacPhail (Ian); and great-granddaughters, Peyton and Carlee. She is also survived by her brothers, Richard Pike (Elizabeth) and Robert Pike (Olivia); sister, Lorna Clouter (Fraser); and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Helen Hamlyn (Bob); brothers, Frank Pike (Clara) and Stewart Pike.

Arrangements are under the care of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Cremation has taken place. Memorial and interment services will be held in early September. Our gratitude to those who cared for Mom during her brief illness including the EHS team, staff of the QEII Health Sciences Centre Emergency Department and the Neurology team on 7.4. She could not have been in better hands. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's memory will be gratefully accepted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Rockingham United Church, or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made by visiting the Halifax Chapel at: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com

DECKER, Iris Marina
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, July 25, 2020

Born September 3, 1940 in Red Bay, Labrador, resident of Ship Cove, N.L., passed away July 21, 2020 at the home of her daughter in Middle Sackville. Predeceased by her father and mother, Thomas and Fronia Pike (Red Bay, Labrador). Survived by her husband, Ross Decker; and children, Ron Decker(Darlene), Middleton; Penny Decker, Sacramento, Calif.; Kevin Decker, Halifax; and Jean Decker Samson (Cameron), Middle Sackville; grandchildren, Kimberly, Angela, Alex, Dylan and Jake; great-grandchild, Danicka; as well as her brothers, Heber Pike (Donna), Bert Pike (Mallie), Bill Pike (Linda), Dave Pike (Joan), Ross Pike (Maisie), Kevin Pike (Elaine), and Wayne Pike (Janet): and her sisters, Sophia, Bessey (Jim), Ruth Poole (Wallace), and Emily Hall (Darryl); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Iris was a well-known and much-loved lady in her community, and she loved Ship Cove with her whole heart. She showed her dedication to the town and its people over the years through her efforts, which were focused and also far reaching. She wanted to see the community cleaned up and preserved for all to enjoy for generations to come. She worked with the government to get improved roads, walking trails, benches, picnic tables and signs. She worked alongside the recreation committee to clean up the beaches, and got work for summer students to preserve the history of Ship Cove. From her 35 years as a teacher to later years on the Labrador Grenfell Board she served tirelessly to improve the lot of the people she considered her friends and family. The children she taught were special to her and she never forgot one name.

Iris also served her God throughout her life, teaching Sunday school, leading the United Church Women, serving on the manse committee to get a permanent minister for the area. She made many friends with the clergy and was always pleased to have them share a meal after Sunday service. Through the years she wore many hats, wrote letters for people, prepared their taxes, tended to the sick as they needed it, but she was most proud to be a mother and grandmother, taking time to travel and visit her children as they scattered around the world, displaying their pictures and praising their accomplishments whenever she had a willing ear. She was a devoted wife of nearly 60 years and Ross and Iris spent very little time apart. She was a force to be reckoned with, a light to her family, friends and community. She will be forever loved and missed.

Visitation was held Friday, July 24th from 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr. Social distancing measures were adhered to. A private funeral service will be held today, Saturday.
