ABBOTT, Robert Chesley "Bob"
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, December 14, 2020

Died peacefully at the age of 93 while in palliative care in Dartmouth General Hospital on December 11, 2020. Robert (Bob as everyone called him) was one of seven children born to Thomas and Margaret (Mullett) Abbott in Wesleyville, N.L., in 1927. In 1950, he married Florence L. Morris, Port aux Basques, N.L., and raised sons, Robert (Helen Jesty) and Glen (Annette Daley).

In 1943, Bob joined the Canadian Merchant Navy sailing in convoys in the allies' Battle of the Atlantic war efforts of the Second World War. Following the war, he joined Canadian National Railways, later CN Marine and Marine Atlantic and continued to work at sea for much of his career. During this period, he rose through the ranks to be promoted to a vessel's officer, Chief Steward. Later, he left his career at sea to accept the position on shore of Superintendent of Marine Atlantic, Atlantic Region where he was responsible for all passenger catering services for the region. During this stage of his career, he studied Hotel Restaurant Management at Attica University in New York. He traveled throughout Europe for Marine Atlantic seeking out and arranging for vessels to be acquired for use in the various locations in Atlantic Canada but mainly for the service between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Throughout life, his interests included time in the outdoors, the beauty of nature, gardening, fishing, long walks with his dog(s), friendships, and time with his family. In retirement a passionate hobby emerged, model sailing boat building. He even made several sailing vessels in bottles. His model boats have been acquired by admirers of his craft as far away as Switzerland.

Bob was community minded and an active volunteer. He was a long-time member and President of the Rotary Club in North Sydney. In addition, he organized and participated in many other community fundraising campaigns for those in need. Bob's greatest achievement was being a devoted husband and a beloved father. And while he will be deeply missed, the most cherished memories of a long and fulfilling life will not.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; sons, Robert and Glen; sister, Melveen (Dale Dunham), Beavercreek, Ohio; granddaughter, Lauren Daley Abbott, whom he cherished; predeceased by sister, Annie; brother, Jack; sister, Kathleen; sister, Oliver; brother, Max; and nieces and nephews;

Cremation has occurred. Special thanks to the staff at Dartmouth General Hospital for their wonderful and compassionate care during this difficult time. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the SPCA, Nature Conservancy of Canada or any food bank. Age 77, Truro, passed away at her home in Truro on December 15, 2020 surrounded by her husband, Harold, and daughters, Sandra, Eileen and Dale. Helen was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 7, 1943. She was predeceased by her father, John Rorrison; and her mother, Sissy (Elizabeth) Rorrison. Helen was a school teacher for many years in Truro and surrounding areas. She was also an avid bridge player and had a long-time partner in Judy Rose and, as well, played many hands with neighbour, Janet Fleury. Helen also had a passion for doing water colour painting. She enjoyed going to classes and learning the art of painting and, as Doc. Livingston always commented, she was always the best in her class even though she felt her paintings were not that great.

Helen always put everyone else first and even in her final days, stated to the doctor and nurses that there were others out there that could use the care more than she. Helen touched the hearts of many individuals along her journey in life and will be remembered fondly by all. Many thanks to her family doctor, Dr. Ellis, the palliative care team of Dr. Courtney Smith and nurse, Angela McDonnell, Dr. Rowe and the many VON nurses who cared for her in her last days. Thank you to all Helen's friends and family that came to see her in her final days and brought all the lovely food items. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society Nova Scotia Division, 5826 South St., Halifax, NS B3H 9Z9, or a charity of choice. A Graveside Service will be held in Bible Hill Cemetery in the Spring of 2021 (to be announced). Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. GOSSE, Bella Rose (Frampton)
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, Nova Scotia, December 10, 2020

Passed peacefully away on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the age of 85 years, in Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Bella was born in Bay Bulls, N.L., but grew up in St John's. Married to Ed Gosse of Whitbourne, they moved to Mount Pearl and raised their daughter, Jennifer, there. A devoted member of the Church of the Ascension for 40 years, Bella left her home in 2003 to move to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador to be with Jennifer and her husband Philip Holwell.

When Jennifer joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2007, Bella began a journey that would involve moving five more times and living in three different provinces. Though she found great joy in meeting so many kind and generous people and being involved in churches and chapels across the country, she did not enjoy the nomadic life of a military family and it took a toll on her health. For the last few years she struggled with the debilitating effects of dementia. Her family will be eternally grateful for those who looked after her through the last years of her life: first the staff of 2 Manor at Northwood and then those at Maplestone Enhanced Care. Through this pandemic, the staff not only did their job of caring for her physical needs, but became a second family, loving her in person on behalf of her family who were not permitted to visit for months on end.

Bella leaves to mourn her daughter, Jennifer (Phil); brother, Bill Frampton; brother-in-law, Don Chaytor; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karl (Gladys), Sylvia (Fred), Phyllis (John), Rita, and Gerry Tulk; many nieces and nephews, including Joanne Simfukwe (Jacob), Edward Chaytor, Sarah Goulding (Scott), Beverly Harper (Danny), Robert Ford (Chandra), Joan Smith (Claude) and most of the Gosse clan in Whitbourne. Nanny Bella cherished her honorary grandson Wesley and delighted in his stories and pictures.

In accordance with her wishes, when the pandemic permits, there will be a funeral service in Church of the Ascension, Mount Pearl, N.L., and burial alongside her husband in Kenmount Road Cemetery. Anyone wanting to honour her memory with a donation is invited to support any Anglican Church, as Bella loved them all. WITHERS, Annunciata Mary "Nancy"
The Chronicle Herald, halifax, December 19, 2020
March 25, 1928 - December 17, 2020
.
It is with profound sadness that the family of Annunciata Mary "Nancy" Withers of Dartmouth, announces her passing on December 17th. Our matriarch was born in Marystown, N.L., a daughter of the late Richard V. Pittman and Mary (Caines) Pittman. Nancy was the loving wife of William "Bill" Withers; proud mother of Rickola Withers and Linda Withers (Brad); a doting grandmother of Devin Withers-Hum (Homayra), Jillian Withers-Hum (Connor); and great-grandmother of her "little prince", Xavier Withers-Hum. She was predeceased by sisters, Annie Power, Betty Walsh and Eileen Dober; brothers Joseph, Leonard and Richard; and several nieces and nephews.

Nancy attended Sacred Heart Convent School and the Mount Academy. In her youth she was a member of the choir of Sacred Heart Church of Marystown. She loved music, dancing, singing and entertaining at social gatherings. Nancy attended the Bishop & Bennett School of Ballroom dancing in Halifax where she became an accomplished dancer. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by T. Eaton Co. in downtown Halifax. As if fate had predestined, her friend of the past, William Withers, being repatriated from Korea stopped over at HMCS Shearwater in August 1952 to await a flight to Newfoundland. At last, they were together and were united in marriage by Father Jeremiah Mackey on August 23, 1954, surrounded by friends and family at Saint Theresa's Church in Halifax. In later years she served for eight years as a member of the board of directors for the Truro School for Girls and also served on the executive committee of the Dartmouth North Progressive Conservative Association for ten years.

Nancy always displayed dedication and enthusiasm in all matters near and dear to her, whether it was her church, fundraising activities or political endeavours. She possessed a unique way of motivating volunteers during elections with charisma and laughter, especially when it involved her husband's municipal elections and his provincial efforts as campaign manager in Dartmouth North. She made hundreds of phone calls influencing positive fundraising outcomes for several worthwhile organizations, such as the IWK Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Feed Others of Dartmouth. Nancy played a critical role in helping her husband achieve the distinction of the highest level of funds raised by one individual in the Atlantic provinces for Big Brothers Big Sisters over a period of six consecutive years. This was accomplished by her as she acquired several hundred donors each year. With her assistance, her husband was named 1984 Nova Scotia Volunteer of the Year. Her compassion and commitment to her loved ones, her church and her community was evident in all of her accomplishments.

Mass will be held in Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 10 Maple St., Dartmouth on Wednesday, December 23rd at 11 a.m. Please visit: www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca for a link to view the services virtually. Private interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. We wish to extend our special thanks to Father Charlie Burke, the Withers' personal care staff and to those with Maplestone Enhanced Care in Fairview.
