EMMETT, Dorothy May (Tucker)
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, May 6, 2019

Died peacefully and with dignity in the loving care of her daughters Frankie and Nancy, son-in-law, Carman and "her dog" Rosie at home, as she desired, in Lawrencetown on April 20, 2019. Born March 4, 1925 on Bell Island, N.L., Dorothy was the middle child of nine and daughter of the late Algernon and Mariah (Churchill) Tucker. Upon completion of high school and her business course, she was employed with the Royal Canadian Navy Supply Depot as a clerical staff member in St. John's during the Second World War. It was there she met her naval husband George Edward "Ted" Emmett. They later married in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que. on March 16, 1945.

Dorothy lovingly supported her husband throughout his military career living in many different locations. While serving in England, Ted and Dorothy received a Royal Command Invitation and attended the Queen's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. While residing in Ontario and working with Standard Brands, Dorothy was known as "Blue Bonnet Sue." Eventually, Dorothy, Ted and family settled in Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co., at what would later become known as "Emden Farm."

Dorothy's community and volunteer contributions were many. She was appointed to the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women for two terms and served as the President for the Annapolis East Ladies Progressive Conservative Society attending many functions in both Halifax and Ottawa. She was an avid curler and contributor to many charities throughout her lifetime. While she was often teased about her inability to say no to a charitable request, it was reflective of her incredibly generous and compassionate spirit.

Surviving Dorothy are her children: daughter, Purdy (Lou) White, Malagash; sons, Edward "Ted", Calgary, Alta.; and Robin Tucker, Ottawa, Ont.; daughters, Frankie (Carman) Toole, Lawrencetown; Nancy (Jerry) Parker, Nictaux. Dorothy is also survived by her sisters, Mollie Salerno, California; and Trudy Emmett, Halifax;, as well as her ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks to the many people who have contributed to her care over the years. Special thanks to Sharon, Dr. G. Goodine and Dr. L. Burgess. Her unofficial therapy dog Rosie, stayed faithfully by her side until her final journey. Dorothy came to question "Who rescued who?"

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation upon request. A private committal service will be held in Dorothy's memory at a future date. Donations in memory may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation, Misfit Manor Dog Rescue Society or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com

Leo/Dad/Pop began his mining career in Schefferville, Que., in the late 1950's, eventually marrying the love of his life, Helen Smith, and moving to Labrador City to start a family. He began his career with the Iron Ore Company of Canada as a heavy equipment operator, ultimately taking on supervisory roles until his retirement in 1999. He was fortunate in that he loved his job and was a loyal employee to the company he worked for, for so many years. He always appreciated the quality of life accorded to him and his family as a result of living and working in Labrador City.

He derived much joy from time spent with family and took great pride in their accomplishments. We were lucky to have him in our corner! While he spent his retirement years in Kentville, he always held a special place in his heart for Labrador City and its residents and he looked forward to receiving his weekly copy of The Aurora that arrived every Monday in his mailbox. Leo was an avid gardener who took great pride in the care and maintenance of his property and his green, weedless lawn was one of his many legacies. We loved him dearly and will miss him forever.

Afterglow I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one; I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when the day is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done
