ABBOTT, Rufus Baker
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, October 29, 2018

Age 76, passed away peacefully in Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre on October 21, 2018 surrounded by family. Rufus is survived by his wife and best friend of 55 years, Joyce; daughters, Michele (Bob), Tanya (Peter); grandchildren, Jacob, Kent, Olivia, Hannah and Bobby Joe. He is also survived by brothers, Alonzo (Dale) and Dan (Geraldine); sisters, Christine (Harry) and Marion (Melv); as well as many close cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. Rufus was predeceased by his parents, Wallace and Mable Abbot; birth mother, Eupheima Crewe; beloved sister, Velma Wells. Born in Elliston, N.L. January 17, 1942, Rufus was involved in the Sea Cadets before heading off to St. John's to study. He received a Certificate of Proficiency in Radio in December 1961. He worked as a Radio Operator with the Department of Transportation in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for several years. Rufus then moved on to work as a Radio Technician with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Halifax for over 30 years. Rufus volunteered with Feed Nova Scotia for 17 years, enjoyed many nights of music and dancing with Joyce at the Newfoundland Club, and loved a good game of cards. He loved wood carving, enjoyed camping and travelling with family and friends and loved spending time with his precious grandchildren. Rufus always had a smile on his face and loved to chat with everyone he met. He will be forever missed by a large circle of family and friends in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and beyond. Thanks to the staff at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital and Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre for the wonderful care he received. Donations can be made to Parkinson Society Maritime Region.


HEPBURN, Anne Loretta

Age 93, of Aylesford, Kings Co., passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Port au Port, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Edward and Sussana (Morrell) Nolan. Surviving are daughters, Iretta (Jimmy) Knickle, Weymouth; Mabel (Jean-Luc) Comeau, Halifax; Barbara (Dave) Marshall, Edmonton, Alta.; son, Charles Bart Musgrave, Sackville, N.B.; grandchildren, Deanna (Andrew Miller) Musgrave, Saint John, N.B.; Melinda Musgrave, Halifax; Jennifer Musgrave, Saint John, N.B.; stepdaughter, Linda (Ron) Hiltz, Aylesford; step granddaughters, Andrea MacMillan, Bridgewater; Kelly (Claude) Aucoin, Victoria, B.C. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Hepburn; son, Robbie Hepburn; granddaughter, Dr. Deborah Musgrave, DVM; stepdaughter, Deborah (Hepburn) MacMillan; half-sisters, Mary (William) Nolan, Alice Bourgeosis. HUNT, Gloria Mae

After a courageous battle with cancer, Gloria Mae Hunt, age 61 of Belle Cote, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2018 in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp. Born in Boswarlos, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Harold Martin and the late Greta (Jesso) Martin. Gloria will forever be remembered for her kind spirit to everyone she encountered throughout her life. Gloria is survived by her husband, Wade Hunt; son, Joseph (Tanya) Hunt, South West Margaree; daughter, Tracy (Dion) Hillier, Cambridge, Ont.; sisters, Wanda Hoskins, Sandy Harvey, Paula Martin, all of Newfoundland; grandchildren, Rebecca, Wilson and Brandon Hunt, Daniel and Dylan Hillier; special aunt, Rita Companion, Newfoundland. KEEPING, Selina (Harvey)

Age 84, passed away peacefully in Halifax on October 29, 2018, surrounded by her family. Born in Isle Aux Morte, N.L., she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Harriett (Wells) Harvey. Her life was spent unselfishly dedicated to caring for her family. Her children could expect a call from her daily wondering what we were up to as well as checking in with her grandchildren. She loved cooking and hosting family suppers and having her family over to enjoy them with treats on hand for her great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Ida Lillington (of Isle Aux Mortes, N.L.). She is survived by her constant companion and husband of 61 years, Willoughby; daughters, Cindy (Wayne) Baker, Porters Lake; Sylvia (Dale) Leckie, Dartmouth; son, John (Faith) Keeping, Truro; grandchildren, Jason (Sara), John (Kelly), Dale (Jessica), Samantha, Nicolas, Sean, Jeffrey (Kelly) and Dylan (Haley); and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Chloe, Aidan, Sebastian and Aubrie. She will be missed by all who loved her. A special thank you to the staff and volunteers of the VG Palliative Care Unit who provided such compassionate care. MATCHEM, (Cluett), Effie "Catherine" Of Halifax

With heavy hearts we remember Effie "Catherine" Matchem (Cluett), born November 21, 1940, in Frenchman's Cove, N.L. She was a daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Selena "Mini" (Bond) Cluett, who passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2018 in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. She was surrounded by her loving family. Effie was the beloved wife for 57 years to John Matchem, formerly of Little Passage, N.L. Effie moved to Halifax at the young age of 16. She worked at Camp Hill Hospital until she began raising her family of four. Effie then spent the rest of her career working at the Pictou Bakery for 11 years and then 28 years as the Resident Manager of Killam Properties in Halifax. She is still known today as baking the best bread rolls and donuts out there. She loved to do many things such as playing crib every night with her dear husband Jack; bingo, rummoli, watching her beloved Blue Jays. Most importantly she cherished time spent with her seven grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, John "Jack" Matchem; her daughters, Catherine (Peter Webber), Halifax; Jacqueline (Brenton Daley), Scotsburn; Rita (Philip Caissie), Bridgewater; son, David Matchem, Pictou. Effie loved dearly her grandchildren, Shannon, Thomas, Lindsay, Allison, Lauren, Tyler and Jorja. She is survived by her sisters, Doris (Jim Day), Garnish, N.L.; Rita (Roy Hardiman), Garnish; Ilene (Harold Matthews), Burin, N.L.; Marion Parsons, St. Johns, N.L.; Linda Bulger, St. Johns; Hazel Harding, Eastern Passage; brothers, Walt (Rose), Grand Prairie, Tex.; Morley (Verna Webber), Country Harbour. She was predeceased by her parents, Eugene and Mary Selena (Bond); and sister, Gwen. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Wayne MacLeod, receptionist Mary Joe, QEII Emergency nurses and doctors who showed us nothing but compassion in a very difficult time. A very special thank you to Dr. Lazar Milovanovic for his thoughtful care and compassion to our mother and father. Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held in Rockingham United Church on Thursday, October 11th at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in Rockingham Church Hall, Halifax. MEANEY, Ronald J.

Age 89, of Parrsboro, and formerly of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Harbour Grace, N.L., he was a son of the late Dennis and Mary (Lamb) Meaney. Ron was Chief Financial Auditor of Veteran's Affairs Canada retiring in 1989. He is survived by his children, Danny, Ottawa; Mary Jane "MJ" Hammer (Bob), Calgary; Steve (Glenda), Parrsboro; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; four step-grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; a step great great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Dorothy "Dot" Whitten in 2005; siblings, Frank, Doris, Agnes, Gordon, Gerald, Clotilde, Jack, Kevin, Catherine, Eileen. Funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, October 26th, in St. Brigid's Catholic Church, Parrsboro, Father Craig Christenson officiating. Reception to follow in St. Brigid's Church Hall. Burial will take place in Calgary with his loving wife at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Atlantic Division. NEWHOOK, Murdock James

Age 89, born in Hampden, N.L. and raised in Roddickton, died peacefully in his sleep in St. Vincent's Nursing Home, Halifax, on October 27, 2018. Son of William Newhook of Botwood, and Sarah Newhook, (Ralph) of Hampden. Predeceased by brother, Floyd; and sister, Adella. Survived by sisters, Aleta, Halifax; and Ruby, Rodickton. Murdock was a member of the Armed Forces serving in the RCN (Bosns) for 25 years. Retiring as Petty Officer 1st Class, he then served 15 years in the Auxiliary Navy in Halifax. He is survived by his wife, Frances (Kieley); children, James (Edna), Barbara Dejong (Darryl), Shawn (Tammy), Freeman Cull (Glenda). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Natasha, Sabrina, Kyle, Kristopher, Kody, Scott, Stephanie, Christine, Jessica, Nicole, Hollis, Terri-Lynn, and Alison; as well as 14 great-grandchildren. On Friday, November 2nd from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., a Celebration of Life will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, NS B2W 3T9. Of Halifax, passed away October 23, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born in Clarenville, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Harold and Ruby (Balsom) Pitcher. Linda was a long-term employee of Sears Canada and thoroughly enjoyed her co-workers and time there. She was an avid reader and loved people wherever she worked or lived; she had many close friends who loved her. Survived by her children, Shawn, Vanessa, and Thane; grandchildren, Delanie, Brooklynn, Micheal, Matthew, and Mitchell; brothers, Keith and Gary; sister, Shirley, as well as many nieces and nephews. Linda was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Paris; and her brother, Donald Pitcher. In keeping with Linda's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place 4-6 p.m. Saturday, October 27th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Donations in memory may be made to the Diabetes Canada. PETERS, Frances Elizabeth "Fran"

Age 88, of Berwick, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Valley Regional Hospital on Sunday, October 14, 2018. Fran was born in Little Bay West, N.L. on September 2, 1930 to the late Charles and Pheobe (Grandy) Skinner. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years E. L. "Ted" in 2006. Fran spent 88 years in the service of her family, church, community and her world. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League and she was an avid volunteer for the Berwick Food Bank for many years. She is survived by Ted (Joanne and their children, Teddy, Christa and Sarah); Theresa (Wayne Eagles and their children, Dana and Landis); Gerald (Pat and their children, Zach, Alex and Miranda); Wendy (Tom Chennell and their children, Chasity, Jason and Andrea); Tim (Kate and their children, Sadie, Noah and Frances); Mike (Shelly and their children, Andy and Aleesha); Jack (and his daughter, Beth); 12 great-grandchildren and nine siblings. There will be no visitation, by request. A funeral service, followed by reception, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 18th in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Father John MacPherson officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Feed Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice. ROWE (Michael), Yvonne Mary

Of Dartmouth, passed away on October 31, 2018 peacefully, at home with her dog Maggie by her side. Born in St. John's, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Miriam and Mickey Michael. Yvonne is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Nick) Farah; grandchildren, Michael and Hope. She is also survived by her brother and sister and many nieces and nephews. Yvonne was a loving, loyal, mother and grandmother who was incredibly proud of her daughter and her grandchildren. They were the light of her life and a constant source of joy for her. She was blessed to have met and married the love of her life, her late husband, Allan Rowe. Their love and connection was admired by all who knew them. A true love story. There is some comfort in knowing that Yvonne and Allan are now reunited. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, November 5th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6th in the funeral home chapel, Rev. James Haughn officiating. Reception to follow. SNOWE, Flora Lillian "Flo"

Age 79 of Halifax, passed away October 30, 2018 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Seal Cove, Fortune Bay, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Madeline (Collins) Bungay. Flora's family meant everything to her. The love for her children and grandchildren was endless. We always knew how much she loved us. Flora loved a good game of cards, listening to her country music (George Jones) and watching her Toronto Blue Jays with Harold. Flora worked for 20 years at the VG Hospital up until her retirement. She is survived by her daughter, Madeline (Brent) Daley; sons, Harold (Mary), Alexander; grandchildren, Matthew (Myra), AJ (Liz), Alexandra (Brad), Jacob; great- granddaughter, Haidyn; sister, Irene (Fred) Sisulak; brothers, Alexander (Fern), Jim (Lisa) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, in particular, Max (Ena) Loveless. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Harold "Hank"; brothers, Tom (Marilyn), Don (Shirley); sisters, Muriel and Edie. Visitation will take place 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 1st in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., from where a private family service will take place.
