WHIFFEN, Thomas Alloysius
April 16, 1939 - January 19, 2018

We regret to announce the peaceful passing at home of our beloved father, husband, brother, grandfather and great grandfather, Thomas Alloysius Whiffen. Our dad's story began on April 16, 1939 in Sydney, the youngest child of Thomas and Bridget (Murphy) Whiffen, who immigrated from Placentia Bay (Iona Island), Newfoundland in 1921 to begin a new life in Cape Breton together.

Our dad had an amazing work ethic that followed him throughout his life and helped him care for his family. Although he attended carpentry courses after school, he worked mostly in the trucking industry. From driving transit buses, to long-haul trucking and working for Gulf Oil for many years, he then hauled gravel and coal as well as did snow removal until his retirement at age 75. He was a loyal, dedicated worker who rarely, if ever, missed a day at work. He could fix any type of machinery and could drive any type of vehicle, from dump trucks to eighteen wheelers, backhoes to loaders. He had a perfect driving record for someone who spent much of his life on the highway.

Our dad loved the outdoors, regardless of the season. His many gardens and orchards were plentiful and beautiful. He loved to fish, hunt and bird watch. He was a master carpenter in his own right and loved building things. He took great pride in his work. Our dad loved country music and hockey which he played as a teenager.

Our mom, Annette Ulalie (Burns) Whiffen was the love of his life, having been married for over 60 years. Besides our mom, he is survived by three sisters, Eileen (Billy MacKinnion) and Margaret (Nick O'Dea), from Sydney as well as Mary Francis Gymard from Hamilton, Ontario. Our dad is also survived by his six children, Yvette Penney (John), Brenda MacInnis (Michael), Tanya (Dave), Arlene (Dale) and his only son Tommy, all of Sydney as well as his daughter Suzette Robson (Ken) from NewMarket, Ontario. Grandchildren and great-grand children were the love of our dad's life. His thirteen grandchildren are Kristine, Tyler, Dylan, Christopher, Cory, Chrystal, Jeremy, Timothy, Cassandra, Kyle, Emma, Thomas Riley and Samarah. He also had three great-grandchildren, Julia, Scarlett and Dax as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Cape Breton and Newfoundland. Dad was predeceased by his parents as well as brothers Raymond, Vince, Gerald, Pat, Frank and Alfred Maher. Thank you to Father Paul Murphy for your prayers and support. A private memorial will be held with internment in New Calvary Cemetary, Whitney Pier.
