Anderson, Alastair "Gordon"

Of Hantsport, originally from Corner Brook, N.L., in his 84th year, died peacefully in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Left to mourn are his wife of 60 years, Sheila (Hedges); sons, Stephen (Monica), Cow Head, N.L.; and Paul (Brenda), Gander, N.L.; sister, Jean, Windsor; grandchildren, Beth, Cow Head, N.L.; Charlene (Brian), Gander, N.L., and Dwayne (Meagan), St. John's, N.L.; great-grandchildren, Carson, Aaron, Gabriel and Martin. Besides his parents, Harry and Allison (Dean) (of Newcastle on Tyne, England), Gordon was predeceased by sisters, Margaret and Cecil (Corner Brook, N.L.); and brother-in-law, Parker Regan (Windsor).

Gordon worked 25 years for the Bank of Montreal, serving in Curling, Corner Brook, Botwood and St. John's, N.L., Moncton, N.B., and Halifax. He enjoyed a second career with Modern Paving in St. John's, N.L., before retiring to Hantsport. He was an active member and contributor to Avon United Church, Hantsport. He will be remembered for his gregarious laugh and participation in community activities, especially cards.

Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where a funeral service celebrating Gordon's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019 in DeMont Family Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Beth Johnston officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre. Interment will take place following the reception in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. No flowers by request. Donations in memory of Gordon may be made to Avon United Church or a charity of one's choice. BEMISTER, Edgar M.

Age 87 years of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully December 20, 2018 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in St. John's, N.L., he was a son of Bertrum and Flossie Bemister. He was a long-time employee of Imperial Oil Ltd. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Macklin); sons, Gary (Cathy), and Derrick (Chrissy), Dartmouth; grandson, Robert (Vanessa); great-granddaughter, Lila; Mark (Olesya); great-granddaughter, Sienna; granddaughter, Nicole Rendell (Kevin); great-grandson, Riley; great-granddaughter, Maia Evelyn; step granddaughter, Caitlin; step great- grandson, Carter; niece, Roma Guy (Edwin), Mount Pearl, N.L.; nephews, Paul Motty, Labrador; Douglas Motty, New Brunswick; and niece, Beverley Motty, Conception Bay, N.L. Connolly, Francis Cortland

Of Corner Brook, N.L., passed away peacefully December 7, 2018 at age 55. Predeceased by mother, Sylvia Wellon, and father, Gerald Connolly; brother, Wayne (Cathy) Connolly. Cortland is survived by his stepmother, Margaret Connolly; children, Dennis, Sarah (Lionel) and Thomas Connolly; grandchildren, Cortland and Jonathan Connolly; siblings, Joseph Bennett, Matthew (Dixie) Connolly, Mitch (Clorissa) Connolly, Richard (Tina) Connolly, Donna Baker, DD (Paul) Starling, Kelly (John) MacIsaac, and Kerry Wellon; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Burial will take place Wednesday, December 12th at 1 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3200 Oliver Rd., Thunder Bay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The World Wildlife Federation.


Emerson, Evelyn Mary

Passed away peacefully in Northwood Centre on December 7, 2018. She was born in Corner Brook, N.L., December 17, 1931, to Henry Prescott and Mary Eileen (MacKinnon) Emerson. Evelyn began her career with Imperial Oil in Halifax and then moved to their Toronto offices. She retired after 25 years. She returned to Halifax to spend her remaining years with her extended family and friends. Evelyn is remembered by her nieces, Julie Emerson and Eileen Murphy (Stephen), Halifax; nephew, George C. Emerson (Charmain), Toronto; her grand nieces and grand nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brother, George Henry Emerson. Her family thanks Sarah Krieger-Frost and Dr. Cheryl Murphy for their support. Funeral will be held at a later date, with arrangements by J.A. Snow Funeral Home. Donations welcomed to Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.


Howse, Edward "Ted"

Of Middle Sackville, formerly of Wesleyville, N.L., peacefully passed away December 16, 2018 at the age of 66 in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Left with lasting memories are: Marilyn, his wife of 46 years; sons, Duane (Amanda) of Middle Sackville; Christopher (Genevieve) of Ashburnham, Mass.; and the prides of his life, his grandchildren, Abby (and her mom Tracey), Avery, Caroline, and Lucas; brothers, Richard (Marjorie), George (Marion), Geoff (Cheryl), Roger (Rhonda), Paul; sister, June Sheppard (Roll); sister-in-law, Joyce; as well as a large circle of family and friends. Ted was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Howse (Wesleyville, N.L.); brother, Perry; and infant sister, Patricia.

Edward Howse, known to his friends and family affectionately as Ed or Ted, enjoyed a long-lasting career in the mining industry in various roles as a millwright, shovel operator and training department. He worked for IOC in Labrador City, N.L. for 32 years before retiring, but he could not shake the mining bug before coming back out of retirement to go work for Voiseys Bay and eventually Grey Rock Mining to finish off his career. Edward made his final home in Middle Sackville, but his heart was always in Wesleyville, N.L., where he had his camper, it was his own little piece of Heaven on earth. Edward touched a lot of lives in more ways than he ever realized, with his humor, kindness, and humanity towards others. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all his Tim Hortons coffee buddies. Kelly, Margaret Mary

Age 73 of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully with family by her side on December 8, 2018 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Dunville, N.L. she was a daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Dray) Hartley. Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Patrick; children, Christopher (Tina), Jill (Steve), Sally (Stan Tzogas); grandchildren, Maggie, Anna, Jack; siblings, Lucy Kelly (Tony), Gerard (Linda), Joan Kehoe, Dermot (Sharon), James, Ronald (Terry), Betty Jones (Jim), Helen (Gilles), Tom (Hermance), Kevin (Debbie); aunt, Theresa Dray; sisters-in-law, Jean, Barb, Patricia; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Margaret will also be sadly missed by Patrick's family of Middle Cove, N.L. and by Shekeisha and Zion Pellow. She was predeceased by her brother, Edward and brother-in- law, John Kehoe.

Visitation to be held from 2-4 p.m. today, Monday, December 10th and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, December 11th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 12th in Saint John XXIII, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth, Father Irek Bem officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. King, Ross Edgar

Age 88, of Meadowvale, Annapolis Co., passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2018, at home. Born in Lady Cove, N.L., he was a son of the late Rubin and Annie (Jenkins) King. Ross had served with the Military Police in the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, with postings at several military bases across Canada and overseas. He later worked as a counsellor in the detox unit at Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre and for 30 years owned and operated his own hobby farm growing vegetables. Ross was an avid curler and was a past member of Markland Lodge No. 99, A.F. & A.M., Kingston and the Philae Shriners.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, the former Elizabeth M. "Betty" Elliott; daughter, Deborah (Jerry) Jarsez, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Sharon (Scott) Howden, Ottawa, Ont.; sons, Fred (Holly) King, Kingston; Carl (Jackie) King, Stayner, Ont.; stepchildren, Kathy (Rob) McKinley, Bramber; Wendy (Rick) Robicheau, Doucetteville; Janet (Colin) Lowe and Darren Wallace, both of Meadowvale; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; sisters, Muriel Reid and Joan Burt, both of Newfoundland; Melvina (Nathan) Marsden, New Brunswick; brother, Jack King, Newfoundland/Alberta; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Gert; brothers, Roy and Carl.

Visitation will take place from 7-9 p.m., Friday evening in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448, from where the memorial service will take place 2 p.m., Saturday, December 8th with Rev. Age 93, passed away December 7, 2018. Born in Isle aux Morts, N.L., she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Louise (Edmunds) Scott. Rose Mary was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Francis; and daughter, Judy Huelin. Forever loved by her children, Michael (Christine), Tony (Jo-Ann), Brian, all of Halifax; and Peter of Toronto; grandchildren, Rose Marie (Kevin) Coleman, Barbara (Trent) Bryan of Calgary; Melissa Huelin of St. John's; Justin and Jessica LaBreche of Ottawa; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Amanda Coleman of Calgary. Also predeceased by her siblings, Julia (Ambrose) Billard, Sarah Jane (Garfield) Walters, Harriet (Thomas) Harvey, Susannah (Solomen) Billard, Caroline Scott, and Winter (Leah) Scott, all from Isle aux Morts. Visitation will be Thursday, December 13th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 15th in Saint Mother Teresa Catholic Parish Church at 6032 Normandy Dr., officiated by Father Andrew Rembarczyk. Purcell, James John Peter "Jim"

Age 83, of Eastern Passage, passed away on December 17, 2018. Born in Portugal Cove, N.L., he was the loving husband of 62 years, to Marlene; father of sons, Jamey, Gary and Wade; grandfather of Taylor, Joshua, Jesse and Brandon; great-grandfather of Brayden; brother of Bill (predeceased), John, Ted and Mike (predeceased); son of Jack and Sarah. To know Jim was to know a love and kindness, a persistence and will to persevere through thick and thin - with his own special brand of vim and vigour. His greatest joys, and fondest memories, came from times spent with family and friends. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a family man who cherished the love, life and laughs of family and friends, the most. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, December 19th and Thursday, December 20th from 7-9 p.m. in Eastern Passage Community Funeral Home, 5 Cow Bay Rd., Eastern Passage. STRICKLAND, M. Eileen

Age 83 of Bishopville, Kings Co., passed away peacefully in Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday afternoon, December 22, 2018. Born on August 17, 1935, in Dawson's Cove (now Sandyville), N.L., Eileen was the daughter of the late John and Pearl (Loveless) Wells.

Eileen was blessed to have a full life, a life that was filled with friends, family and faith. From the beginning she touched the lives of everyone she met. From Newfoundland to Nova Scotia, her love of teaching stayed evident throughout her life as well as her love for the church. She was an active member of the ACW and loved attending the Sunday morning church service. For the longest part of her life she worked for Statistics Canada as a senior interviewer for a wonderful 25 years. Eileen lived an active life even though to her it was never enough. She was a teacher in everything she did who taught us the joy of friendship, the commitment of faith and love of family.

Eileen is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, David Strickland, Bishopville; sons, Dave, William; daughter, Alleeta Strickland, all of Bishopville; her loving grandchildren, Devlin, Zachary, Katelyn, Brooklyn; sister, Gladys Simms, Sandyville; brother, Gary (Mary) Wells, Mount Pearl, N.L.; also extended family and the children whose lives she touched. Eileen was predeceased by her parents, John and Pearl (Loveless) Wells.

Arrangements are under the care of Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 29th in St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 59 Main St., Hantsport, with Rev. Tom Henderson officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall before the burial in Bishopville Cemetery, Bishopville. Donations may be made to St. Andrew's Anglican Church ACW.
