BILLARD, Lloyd James - 74, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Sept. 4, 2009, surrounded by family after a courageous fight with cancer and severe vasculitis. Lloyd was born in Grand Bruit, N.L., the son of John and Elizabeth Billard (Lillington). Lloyd worked for CN, Westinghouse and four seasons on the boats of the Great Lakes. He had a long distinguished military career with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces as a radar technician (1958-1980), serving in Greenwood, Comox, North Bay, Armstrong, Chatham and Goose Bay, retiring in 1980 at the rank of Sergeant. Following his retirement from the military, Lloyd worked for Transport Canada (Nav Canada) as an electronics technician working in such diverse locales as Goose Bay, Stephenville, Halifax and Gander. While in Goose Bay, Lloyd was very much involved with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as a shop steward. Lloyd parlayed his love of reading into becoming a reading instructor with the Literacy Foundations in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Upon his second retirement, Lloyd built his own house in Grand Bruit on the site of his childhood home and lived 12 wonderful years there with his wife Jean. Lloyd was a card player, builder and accomplished fisherman who thoroughly enjoyed his days on the ocean, traveling to hunt, fish, pick berries and spend time at the cabin with his family. Lloyd enthusiastically pursued his family roots, and was a wealth of historical information. In the last years of his life, Lloyd put some of this information to paper, writing stories that have become favorites among the friends and family who have read them. Lloyd was a terrific conversationalist who heartily shared his thoughts with those who knew him. Lloyd will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Jean, cherished wife of nearly 46 years, along with his son, James Billard (Susan); granddaughter, Olivia; daughter, Jude Billard; granddaughter, Amber; daughter, Kimm Billard-Verbeek (Gord) and grandsons, Alexander, Simon and Cameron. Lloyd is survived by his brothers, Llewelyn, Joshua and Douglas. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Catherine; parents, John and Elizabeth Billard (Lillington); brothers, Nathan, George and Jack and sister, Flora Nystedt (Billard). There was a gathering of family and friends in celebration of Lloyd's life in Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St, Dartmouth on Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Lloyd's ashes will be scattered during a private family ceremony. Donations in memory of Lloyd may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Red Cross, or a charity of choice. Blood donations to your local Canadian Blood Services clinic are always appreciated. The family wishes to thank the caregivers who attended his home, the Victorian Order of Nurses, special thanks to Jill Mac Neil RN, Dr. Richard Warren, and the Palliative Care staff who kept Lloyd's best interests in mind during this difficult time.
