BATTISTE, Mabel Muriel
(November 19, 1939 - August 17, 2015)
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mabel Muriel Battiste at the age of 75 after a brief battle with cancer. Mabel was my best friend, soul mate, fishing buddy, mentor, and sometimes tormenter for 33 years. She was a person who loved the outdoors: fishing, gardening, walking (rain, snow or shine) or just enjoying the fresh air. Her belief was (as her mother use to say) "If you can't do anyone any good, don't do them any harm" and she did a lot of good. Too many to mention, but I know there are many out there who benefited from her "good deeds". Mabel started working at 15, had a store with her friend Sheila (Pink) Ford and worked several other places. She eventually ended up in Halifax where she worked in the Dietary Office at the Halifax Infirmary for 10 years. She returned home to help her mother after her father's death. She loved music and dancing and sang in the church choir for many years.
Mabel was predeceased by infant brother Cyril, parents Tom and Jane (Lomond) Battiste, brother Lewis, nieces Amanda Battiste and Rhonda Seaward, nephew Jason Seaward, brother-in-law Bob Peddle and her "unofficial adopted parents" Harvey and Hazel (Grant) Gabriel. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her partner of 33 years Jean Gabriel. Brothers and sisters; Ronnie (Maxine), Nina Peddle, Audrey (William) Seaward, Ray, Joe (Marie), Kevin (Donna), Marlene (Tom) Brake, Gerard (Carolanne), and Jerome (Pauline); sister-in-law Mary Battiste, Harvey (Lorraine) Gabriel, Keith (Donna) Gabriel as well as 30 nieces and nephews; 28 great nieces and great nephews; 2 great grand nephews; and their families but most importantly her special Canine "baby" Scamper. She will be missed deeply by the Battiste and Gabriel families and special partner Jean Gabriel. Visitation took place on Wednesday, August 19 from 7-9pm, Thursday, August 20 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at East Haven Funeral Home. Funeral services took place on Friday August 21; 2 PM at St. James Anglican Church officiated by Catechist Kay Short. Interment followed at St. James Anglican Cemetery, Barachois Hill. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to St. James Anglican Church, Dr. Charles L Legrow Health Center, or a charity of ones choice. Funeral arrangements were in the care of East Haven Funeral Home Inc, Port aux Basques, 695-2300. www.easthavenfuneralhome.com
"I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love." ---- Leo Buscaglia
