It is with great sadness that the family of the Late John Anderson announce his passing at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre on Sat., Feb. 15, 2003 in his 72nd year. He leaves to mourn with fond and precious memories his sisters: Ada Parsons, (Ralph), Francis Lemoine, (Wilfred); his brothers, Reuben, (Margaret), Andrew, (Betty), all of Rose Blanche and Dan (Carolyn) of Shelburne, NS. As well as a large circle of relatives, nephews, nieces and friends. He is predeceased by mother, Mary (Cox); father, William; sister, Martha Rose (Best); and brother, Douglas. Visitation took place on Sun., Feb. 16 and Mon., Feb. 17 at St. Michael's and All Angels Church, Rose Blanche, from where funeral service was held on Tues., Feb. 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clayton Billard officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Haven Cemetery, Margaree. Funeral service was entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home, Port aux Basques. BARTEAUX, Chester "Colin"

Chester "Colin" Barteaux
, of Dartmouth passed away suddenly at the age of 27 on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Middleton, NS, he was the son of Chester and Joan (Naugier-Mclaughlin) Barteaux. He was a graduate of St. Mary's University with a bachelor of Commerce in 1999 and was presently studying for his Certified Public Accountant. Previously he was employed with Courtesy Chrysler, Dartmouth and presently an accountant at Dartmouth Dodge. Besides his parents, he is survived by his loving partner, Allissa Short formerly of Port aux Basques, NL; half brother, Gary (Barb) Lowe, Bridgewater, nephew Geoff. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton, Pastor Paul Oliver officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co. Donations may be made to the K-9 Vision Canada or Lung Association of Nova Scotia.

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 Violet Bartlett in her 91 year at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre, Stephenville. Violet was the daughter of the late John and Maria (nee Currie) Strickland. She leaves to mourn with precious memories her two sons, Lewis (Ann), Jeffrey's, NL, John (Susie), Millville, NS; five grandchildren, Richard and Jacob of Moncton, NB, Violet of Yellowknife, NWT, Andrew of Millville, NS, and Rita of Baddeck, NS; 10 great-grandchildren, Meaghan, Arron, Jenna, Kashena, Niven, Callie, Ashlyn, Kayla, Ryleigh and Cassity; sister, Blanche Rose of Port aux Basques; brother, Ralph Strickland, Cambridge, ONT., as well as a circle of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob (GYP) in 1976; son, Lloyd in 1967; brothers, William Strickland, Thomas Strickland and James Payne; sisters, Phoebe Dawe and Mary-Ann Dollimount. Passed away peacefully at the Health Science Complex in St. John's on Sunday, April 27, 2003, Virginia Candow at the age of 76 years. Born in Cape Ray, she was the daughter of the late Eliza and John Robert Wall. Virginia retired from her position as a Matron with the RCMP in Inuvik, N.W.T. in 1995, and she received a lifetime membership from the Royal Canadian Legion for 24 years of loyal service with the Ladies Auxiliary, including two terms as President. Passed away peacefully at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre on Friday, May 23, 2003, Reginald Alexander Keeping of Port aux Basques at the age of 58 years. Born at Channel-Port aux Basques, he was the son of Elizabeth and the late George Keeping. Reg started working at CN Marine from 1961 to 1969, then from 1969 to 1974 he worked at Irving Oil Limited. In 1974 Reg took the position as a Highway Enforcement Inspector with the Provincial Government, where he remained for 27 years until his retirement in 2001. Being a very community-minded individual, Reg was involved in many community organizations. These included the Channel-Port aux Basques Lions Club for 20 years, the Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Brigade for 26 years, the Masonic Lodge for 15 years, and his fondest community organization, the Port aux Basques Harbour Authority where he held membership for the last 11 years. Hunting was of great importance in Reg's life. It enabled him to spend many special times with his son, Derek. The Masonic Lodge was also important, it gave Reg so many special times together with his son, Austin. Reg also had a great passion for boats, meeting their crewmembers and most importantly becoming their friend. With 38 years of marriage he leaves to mourn his loving wife, Betty and two children, Austin (Melissa) of St. John's, NL, and Derek (Vivien) of Bedford, NS; three grandchildren: Julia, Jessica and Lucas who have many cherished memories of a wonderful Poppy that will last a lifetime. of Columbia Street, Sydney, N.S. passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Monday, June 9, 2003. Born on April 4, 1912 in Channel-Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Minnie Bertha Poole and Gower Bruce Bragg and the wife of the late Paul Alexander MacLeod. Evelyn spent her early years in Channel, Newfoundland before moving to Sydney in 1929. Over the years, she was active in many organizations, such as the Central School Home and School Association, the First United Church UCW, the Hardwood Hill Cemetery Auxiliary and the Ann Martin Auxiliary of the Sydney City Hospital. Evelyn was a past Noble Grand of the Martha Rebekah Lodge, Sydney. Surviving are her daughters, Joan Fiander, Sydney and Deanna, Cornwallis, N.S.; son, Paul (Diane) Sydney; sisters, Melida (Donnie) MacDonald, Sydney, Ada (Cyril) Walsh, Sardis, B.C. and Ruth (David) Quirk, Birch Grove; grandchildren, Paula Fiander, Victoria, B.C., Bradley (Colleen) Fiander, New Glasgow, Alanna MacIntyre, Gloucester Point, Virginia an Ainsley, Teagan and Iain MacLeod, Sydney; great-grandsons, Benjamin Avery and Breton and Cameron Fiander, as well as many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Paul in 1984; brothers, Russell, Nathan, Nelson and Arthur; and sisters, Yvonne Fiander-Doyle, Helen Leyman and Annie, in childhood. A wonderful and loving mother and grandmother, Evelyn will be remembered as a kind, generous and caring individual by all whose lives she touched. She will also be missed by special close friends, Ann Penny and Rita Dean. The late Evelyn MacLeod had visitation at Sydney Memorial Chapel on June 11, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service was held at First United Church, Witney Avenue, Sydney, N.S. on June 12, 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Passed away at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, NS, on August 8, 2003, James Alex Short, of Dartmouth, NS, formerly of Port aux Basques, at the age of 55 years. Born at Port aux Basques he was the son of the late James and Dulcie Short. For most of his life, Alex was a truck driver who enjoyed his job every time he drove, until finally moving to a mechanics position with Global Transport in Dartmouth. Leaving to mourn nine children: Ida (Roland) Simms, Clyde (Brenda), Gladys (Don) Simms, Loureen (George) Ereaut, Calvin (Doris), Ruth (Glen) Porter, Keith (Glenda), Darlene (Paul) Peddle of Burgeo and Dennis (Cindy) of PEI; four sisters: Miram (Stanley) Symes, Janet (Edwin) Symes, Margaret (Jerry) Wells, Pearl (Douglas) Skinner; one brother, Nathan Marks (Mary); son-in-law, Rodney Simms; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Minnie Marks; husband, John 1971; daughter, Shirley 1984; granddaughter, Debbie 1994; and brother, Seaward Marks 2002 and son-in-law, Edward H. Scott in 1988. The funeral took place May 21 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Russell officiating. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home Burgeo.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Kathleen of 24 years marriage and three children: Rayleen (Lendy) Osmond, Clinton and Vanessa; granddaughter, Natasha all of Port aux Basques; sister and brother, Azelma (Albert) Green of Halifax, Cyril (Louise) Vardy of Port aux Basques; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Gilbert (Carol) Wall of Ontario, Brian (Helena) Wall, Patricia (David) Chippett, Virgie (Allan) Candow all of Cape Ray, Arch Green, Grace Vardy of Port aux Basques, Charles Sheppard of North Sydney and a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his son, William in 1986; brothers, Ward, George, Norman and sisters, Ann Green and Henrietta Sheppard. Visitation took place on Fri., Feb. 14, 2003 at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with a family service at 8 p.m. His remains were then forwarded to Stephenville for cremation. Born at Cape Ray she was the daughter of the late Harriet and Solomon Short. Elizabeth lived the majority of her life at Cape Ray, during the last seven years she lived with her granddaughter, Darlene Benoite at Port aux Basques. She was predeceased by her first husband, Albert Janes in 1947; second husband, Norman in 1968; sons, Kevin in 1969, Raymond in 1985, and Joe in 1995; son-in-law, William Carter in 2002; sisters, Frances Osmond in 2003 and Rebecca Osmond in 1985. She leaves to mourn six loving children, Harold (Joyce), Alex (Rita) George, Austin (Evelyn) all of Cape Ray, Gertie Carter of Port aux Basques, Doris (Herbert) Harris of Gander Bay; 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; brothers, Emmanuel (Bessie) Short of Port aux Basques, George (Ada) Short of Pasadena, Ernest (Emily) Short and Cecil Short of Cape Ray; daughters-in-law, Nina Jeans and Olive Janes of Port aux Basques and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Francis and Flora Ann, brothers, Archibald and Arnold, sisters, Margaret, Adeline and Eva. Visitation took place on Sept. 20 and 21 at the Precious Blood Church, St. Andrews from where funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Father McGrath officiating. Jeremy "Jamie, Whity" Alexander Brian White
. Born Port aux Basques, Nfld., Oct. 20, 1975. Died accidentally in Costa Rica, Sept. 1, 2003. Predeceased by his grandfather, Alexander J. MacIsaac in 1993. Jamie touched everyone he met. Always had a smile for everyone. He will be sadly missed by his parents, Brian and Rose, one brother, Jason (Lisa), nephew, Brandon; grandmother, Mary MacIsaac, Codroy Valley, Nfld.; grandparents, Leonard and Rita White, Port aux Basques, Nfld. A very special friend Lorna from England and his best friend, Drew from Whistler, BC. Many uncles and aunts, cousins all across Canada and friends all over the world. Jamie resided in Whistler the past five and a half years. His love of snowboarding drew him to that part of Canada. He loved Whistler and was planning on making it his home. Jamie lived life to the fullest. This was supposed to be his dream vacation to go surfing and scuba diving. He died doing what he loved. Jamie made many friends over the years. Always had a smile for everyone, no matter what kind of mood he was in. His famous words, "It's all good" Until we meet again son it will be all good. We would like to especially thank Lisa, for all she had done for us through this trying time. To his baseball team "The Roos" for all their help, #69 will be in our hearts forever. Thanks to all the customers from Cinema Star Video who sent flowers, cards and just coming to see how we were doing. A memorial Service will be held in Whistler, BC, on Oct. 20, 2003 (his birthday).
