Barnes, Ettie (nee Mesh)
Pssed away on Sunday March 31, 2013, in 102nd year at Northridge LTC in Oakville, Ontario. Born in Keels, Bonavista Bay, 1 of 6 sisters born to Mary Jane and Richard Mesh. Predeceased by husband Germain and sisters Clara, Fanny, Laura and Sadie and their husbands; parents Mary Jane and Richard and Anastashia (Aunt Stash) and Samuel Yetman, with whom she spent her teenage years in Princeton. She was also proud of her numerous nephews and nieces who reside from coast to coast in Canada. She will be missed by sons Samuel, wife Margaret and Winston, wife Karen, sister Dorothy Hodder of Port Blandford, grandsons Jeffrey, Glenn, Christopher, wife Dawn, Michael, wife Anna and her son Robert. She was the great-grandmother of Alexandra, Kimberly and Matthew & great-great grandmother of Logan. The family thanks the staff at the Northridge Nursing Home for their kind and loving care over the past 2 years. Friends and family were welcomed on Friday, April 5, 2013 at the McEachnie Funeral Home, Pickering Village, Ajax, ON. (She had lived in the area for 27 years). A rousing celebration of her life with reminiscences from son Sam, Ret. Rev. Bert Batstone, Grandsons Glenn and Chris and a violin solo of "Amazing Grace" by grandson Jeff. At the close of the service grandson Jeff fiddled the jig "I'se the By" (her favourite) to clapping and stamping of feet by almost 100 family and friends. Just the way she would have wanted it. She had a long and interesting life that took her from Keels to Princeton, to Champney's West. From there to Montreal and the Toronto area where she was the life of the party at every opportunity. Although away from "The Rock" for 64 years she visited often and was extremely proud of her Newfoundland heritage.

Ryan, Clifford (with picture)
1924-2013

Clifford passed peacefully on July 26, 2013 at the age of 89 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa after a fall and brief illness. Predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Ruth (Hobbs) Ryan. Loving father of Marilyn Simpson (Ric), Fred, Neil (Diane), Sharon, and Brenda Jeffs (John). Lovingly remembered by his 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Rachel (Viney) Ryan of Ottawa. Cliff was born in 1924 and grew up in Birchy Cove on the beautiful but harsh shores of Newfoundland, the son of a fisherman / WW1 Veteran. Cliff spoke fondly of the life in Newfoundland and taught all of his children and grandchildren to appreciate their Newfoundland roots. Cliff worked a variety of jobs in his youth, including carpentry, cab driving and cable installation. Cliff met a pretty teacher from a neighbouring town, Ruth Hobbs, and married her in 1947. In 1950 Cliff and Ruth moved to Oshawa, Ontario to start a family and a new life. Through persistence, Cliff obtained a job at General Motors and worked there for 31 years until his retirement in 1982.
Despite the lack of educational opportunities in 1940's Newfoundland, Cliff was an intelligent man. He always knew just the right way to get a job done, often creating his own tool or gadget in the process. Cliff's hard work and appreciation for the value of a dollar allowed him to build a wonderful home and cottage for his family. His passion for the cottage on Pigeon Lake is shared by all in his family and by many friends who have visited. Many hours were spent enjoying the company of friends around a card table, at a dance or out in the duck blind every fall.
Cliff passed on to his family a love of the outdoors, the ability to laugh at one-self, to work hard, respect others and not judge. Most importantly, he taught all of them how to be great parents, aunts, uncles, and recently, grandparents. He adored children and always went out of his way to create happy memories. Cliff always said the love and happiness her received from the time with his grandchildren "kept him going". They were the light of his life and his pride and joy. Their memories of fun times with "Poppy" or "Gramps" will last a lifetime. A private family burial was held at Ebenezer Cemetery on August 2nd, 2013.
