Ryan, Ruth (nee Hobbs)
Ruth passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, at Lakeridge Health-Bowmanville on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at the age of 86. Beloved wife of Clifford. Loving mother of Marilyn Simpson (Rick), Fred, Neil (Diane), Sharon Ryan and Brenda Jeffs (John). Lovingly remembered by her 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Dear sister of the late Calvin Hobbs of Elliston. Ruth was born in 1926 in Elliston. She had many happy stories of growing up-picking field berries and having tea and a "boil-up" in the woods. She loved days when it would snow as her father would come to her school with his horse and sleigh, bundle up all the kids and take them on a little joy ride home. Ruth left Elliston when she was 16 to study teaching at Memorial University in St. John's. She graduated and came home to teach grade 1-8 in a 1-room schoolhouse in a nearby village. Ruth left Elliston in 1950 for a life in Ontario. Together with husband Cliff, they raised a happy family in a home in Courtice where they lived for over 60 years. They also provided a family cottage still used by many; a place where cousins grew up like brothers and sisters.
Ruth maintained many long-time friends and made new friends wherever she went. She will be missed by many.
