Spaniard's Bay, February 3 -
Mrs. Mary Jane Vokey,
wife of Azariah Vokey of Spaniard's Bay, passed peacefully away at her home on Tuesday, January 27. She had been ill for about half of her fifty-nine years as a severe attack of rheumatic fever in her earlier years left her with a damaged heart. In recent years her condition was greatly worsened by paralytic strokes and she became a total invalid, so when death came swiftly it brought merciful release to long years of bodily suffering.
Despite setbacks, time and time again, she rarely complained and those who visited here found her ever cheerful. She was a devout Anglican with faith unswerving, and it was that faith coupled with the loving ministrations of her husband and adopted daughter that brought her through many a crisis. Her doctors, too, were very sympathetic and often their words of kindness and encouragement were as potent as the drugs they prescribed.
Beside her husband she leaves her adopted daughter Rosie, two sisters, Lena (Mrs. Fred Jolly), Nancy (Mrs. William Patton) both in Toronto. Two brothers Abraham Smith in Waterloo, Ontario and W. Llewellyn Smith of Spaniard's Bay.
Her funeral was held on Thursday afternoon and the service at the church of the Holy Redeemer was conducted by the rector, Rev. E. Willis. Burial was in the family plot in the church cemetery.
May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Gosse - Lynch Wedding
The marriage of Ethel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gosse of Spaniard's Bay, to Alton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lynch of Bishop's Cove, was solemnized in the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Spaniard's Bay, on Tuesday, February 3, at 7 p.m. Rev. E. Willis officiated and Mr. E. H. Vokey played appropriate wedding music.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride entered the church while the hymn "Lead us Heavenly Father" was being sung by the congregation. Her gown was a white nylon ballerina, with matching shoulder length veil. Her bouquet consisted of red roses. Her attendants were her sister Nina and the groom's sister Eileen, and their gowns were similar to the bride's; Nina's was sky-blue and Eileen's was aquamarine. Mrs. William Greeley and Mr. Robert Gosse supported the groom.
Flower girls were Shirley Gosse and Rosalind Lynch, dressed in pretty lemon and pink gowns, respectfully. Each carried a basket of multi-coloured blooms.
The reception was held at Dawe's Restaurant on Brigus Road, and following a delicious supper of cold turkey and trimmings the balance of the evening was spent in dancing and singing.
Mr. and Mrs. Lynch have now taken up residence at Bishop's Cove. We wish them every happiness.
