BABB, Patience
THE COMPASS, 30 October 1969

BRYANT'S COVE - Passed peacefully away at the home of her son Gordon Babb at Chamberlains, October 6. Mrs. Patience Babb in her 79th year. Although she had been in failing health for a long while, the news of her death came as a shock to the family and friends. Mrs. Babb was a devoted member of the Anglican church which she loved so well and a life-long member of the C.E.W.A., having received her 40 year service certificate some years ago. A highly respected person in this community and also in Chamberlains where she moved to live with her children. She possessed such a pleasing personality that everyone loved her. She was always ready and willing to offer a helping hand to all. She leaves to mourn their sad loss seven daughters Blanche, Mrs. William Martin, St. John's Sadie, Mrs. Arthur Sheppard, St. John's; Hazel, Mrs. M. Pitcher, Chamberlains; Mildred, Mrs. Lloyd Gosse, St. John's; Florence, Mrs. Jesse Blackmore, Chamberlains; Charlotte, Mrs. Lloyd Miller, and Hilda; also two sons Josiah and Gordon with whom she lived one sister Phoebe, Mrs. Richard Mercer and a number of grand children. Many floral tributes adorned her casket. One of the arrangements was from the C.E.W.A. at Bryant's Cove. The funeral, which was largely attended took place from her son's residence to the Anglican Church and cemetery Topsail. The burial service was conducted by Rev. Canon Rusted and Rev. Canon Babb, a nephew of the deceased. Rev. Canon Babb conducted the service at the grave side. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives from their friends at Bryant's Cove.

LOWER ISLAND COVE - Chesley Bursey passed away in hospital at St. John's, October 15. Mr. Bursey was formerly a resident of this community but left some 40 years ago. His funeral took place in St. John's.

CARBONEAR - In the October issue, in the Obituary of Mrs. Louise Chubbs of Carbonear, the name of one of her sons, Frederick, was inadvertently omitted. He is residing at Carbonear.

CARBONEAR - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital on October 15 in her 76 year, Mrs. Louise Chubbs, wife of Leander Chubbs of Carbonear. Left to mourn are her husband, eight sons, George, Charles, Augustus, Joseph, Ernest and Leslie at Carbonear, and Oscar at St. John's; two daughters, Edith, Mrs. James King, at Buchans and Belle at home; twenty two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. James Clarke and one brother, Augustus Oates of Carbonear. The funeral took place on Saturday, October 18 at 2:30 p.m. from her late residence to St. James Anglican Church. Interment was in the Anglican cemetery. She was a faithful member of the Anglican Women's Association and will be missed by all. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family.

COISH, Chesley

BAY DE VERDE - On October 23, Chesley Coish passed away. The late Mr. Coish retired from work many years ago because of ill health but he occupied himself with handicrafts as a hobby. He was confined to his home for a long period of time. He leaves to mourn his widow Isabella, three sons, Berkley, Cecil and Wilfred and daughter Mary, Mrs. Charles Norris, all at Bay de Verde; also a daughter Ethel, Mrs. James Woolridge and Louise, Mrs. Aylmer Young, both in Toronto. Mr. Coish was 77. The remains were laid to rest in the Anglican Cemetery with Rev. K.L. Goldsworthy officiating.

PORT DE GRAVE - Deepest sympathy is extended once again to the "Dawe" family of Ship Cove on yet another death. This is the fourth in the immediate family within the past two months. On August 4, an uncle, Chesley Dawe died, on September 6, Mrs. Dawe's father Mr. Mercer died; on September 23, Mrs. Dawe's sister, Doris Jacobs and on October 5, another sister Edna, Mrs. Osborne of Blaketown died suddenly after returning from visiting her family at Port de Grave and her mother at Bay Roberts. Her funeral took place at Blaketown to the Anglican Church and cemetery on Tuesday, October 7 with Rev. White officiating.

LONG POND - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital October 27, Herbert George Dawe, age 60 years. Leaving to mourn five sisters, Mary (Mrs. Horace Tompkins), Lydia (Mrs. George Deplain) Bessie (Mrs. William Walsh) all at Boston, Mass., Lillian (Mrs. Arthur Usher) St. John's and Fannie (Mrs. Frank Rideout) at Long Pond, also three brothers, William Robert and Charles, all at Seal Cove. The funeral service was held on October 29 at 2 p.m. from the Pentecostal Church. Interment at the Pentecostal Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Pastor Thomas.

DEERING, Helen Caroline

SHEARSTOWN - Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 12 at Trinity United Church for the late Caroline Deering of this community. The late Mrs. Deering passed away on Friday at the age of 84. She was born in this community and spent her lifetime in this area. At the time of her death she was living with her daughter, Margaret, at Bay Roberts. "Aunt Helen" as she was affectionately known was well-liked and well-respected in Shearstown and the surrounding area. She was a quiet person whose objectives in life it could be said were to serve God and do her best for her family and all others with whom she came in contact. For more than twenty years she served this area as the local mid-wife, and over this period of years assisted at the birth of over 500 babies. A large group of relatives, friends and acquaintances attended the funeral to pay their respects to this fine old lady who has lived so long among us, and whom we shall all remember for many years to come. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Stanford. During the burial service the congregation sang the favourite hymn, "All the way my Saviour leads me." She leaves to mourn, two sons, Abner and James at Shearstown; four daughters, Jessie and Fern married at Shearstown, Stella married in Ontario, and Margaret at Bay Roberts with whom she resided, as well as a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her twenty years ago.

DROVER, Elizabeth

SPANIARD'S BAY - On Thursday, October 2, Mrs. Elizabeth Drover passed away at the Carbonear Hospital where she had been a patient for several months. She was in her forty-fourth year. She was of a quiet nature, a very sincere person and she had many friends, but her chief concern was for her home and family and it is there her absence will be most keenly felt. Just over a year ago she accompanied her youngest son to Toronto where he underwent successful heart surgery. She entered hospital in May where she underwent an operation and shortly after returned home. She suffered greatly but bore it patiently and despite all that medical aid could do and the loving devotion of her husband and other members of her family, she could not be spared. Her funeral took place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from Young's Funeral Home to Holy Redeemer Church. The many floral tributes, cards and letters of sympathy were evidence of the esteem in which she was held. Members of the L.O.B.A. of which she was a member attended in a body. The office for the Burial of the dead was read by Rev. E. Willis assisted by Rev. F. Rowsell of Upper Island Cove. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Lewis, one daughter Emmie employed at Toronto three sons, Wayne, Clyde and Leslie at home her parents, Mr. And Mrs. John E. Smith Bishop's Cove, two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Vokey, Spaniard's Bay, Mrs. Gladys Lundrigan, Toronto; two brothers, John I. Smith, St. John, N.B. and Leslie Smith, Bishop's Cove. Sincere sympathy is extended.

DUGGAN, Thomas

GRATES COVE - Passed away in hospital on Oct. 11 at St. John, N.B., Thomas Duggan at the age of 70 years. The late Mr. Duggan was a former resident of Grate's Cove and left home in 1932, but made several visits to his home-town during that time. He was the son of the late Peter and Margaret Duggan. Left to mourn at Grate's Cove, two brothers, William and Arthur and two sisters Mrs. Nicholas (Joanna) Hatch, Mrs. Annie Riggs and one sister, Mrs. George M. (Frances) Clem, U.S.A. Deepest sympathy is extended to the Duggan family from friends at Grate's Cove.

WHITBOURNE - Funeral services were held by Rev. David White at the United Church, Whitbourne for Mr. Bertrum Evans who died at the Grace General Hospital on Oct. 15. He leaves to mourn one son, Frank at Clarenville and three daughters Ruby, Mrs. Harris Allison of Waverly, N.S.; Jean, Mrs. Walter Sparkes of St. John's, and Mavis, Mrs. Wm. C. Sturgeon of Corner Brook. He also leaves to mourn a large circle of friends and relatives including 10 grandchildren.

FILLIER, Raymond

MACKINSON'S - The whole community was shocked by a tragic accident which occurred the night of October 24. Thirteen-year-old Raymond Fillier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Fillier, Springfield Road, was struck by a car and killed instantly. The youth was walking along the main highroad with two companions. The funeral took place the following Sunday from All Saints Church, South River and interment was in the Anglican Cemetery at orth (sic) River. Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing parents and the boy's three sisters; also to the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bussey at this community.

FRENCH, Reuben
THE COMPASS, 04 December 1969

CARBONEAR - There passed away at the Carbonear Community Red Cross Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, October 21, Mr. Reuben French, in his 81st year. Left to mourn are his wife, Norah, two daughters, Pauline, Mrs. George H. Higgins of Milton, Mass., and Elaine, Mrs. Reginald Saunders of Carbonear. Two sons, Sidney and Ford of St. John's. Eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also five sisters, May, Mrs. William Snow of St. John's, Nellie, Mrs. Ray Rendell of Detroit, Michigan, Eva, Mrs. William Drew, of Florida, Elizabeth, Mrs. Leander Thomas of Carbonear, and Gladys, Mrs. George Kattenhorn of New York. Mr. French spent most his life at sea on the Furness Withy ships, and was a veteran of the Merchant Navy in two World Wars. He was an active member of the Masonic Fraternity, Canadian legion, Loyal Orange Association and the Royal Black Preceptory of Carbonear. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. N. Winsor at his residence and the United Church, South Side, with members of each organization in attendance. Interment was in the South Side Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

GREEN, Edgar

WINTERTON - News was received on October 4 by Allison Green of the sudden passing of his brother Edgar Green at the age of 63. He had been in failing health since May but the end was unexpected. He had been residing in Brooklyn, New York and employed at bdds Shipyards as millwright. Born at Winterton he left here at the age of 18 and only came for an occasional visit, his last time home was in 1968 with his wife, the former Gertrude Coates also of Winterton. He leaves to mourn beside his wife, two sons and one daughter, three brothers - Allison at Winterton; Roland and Raymond in U.S.A.; two sisters, Annie Green, New York and Elsie, Mrs. Gordon Hindy and his aged mother, Mrs. Martha Green and six grandchildren, all residing in New York. Interment was in the United States.

BRIGUS - Passed away at the Janeway Children's Hospital, St. John's, Oct. 24, after a brief illness, Paul Hoskins, son of Mr. And Mrs. Lawrence Hoskins, age three months. His funeral took place on Sunday Oct. 26, from his home, to the United Church Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family.

BRYANT'S COVE - Passed peacefully away at Corner Brook on October seventh, Eli Janes in his 78th year. Mr. Janes was born and raised at Bryant's Cove. He leaves to mourn their sad loss one daughter and five sons. Funeral service took pace at the Anglican Church and Cemetery, Corner Brook. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed away suddenly on October 28, Mr. William Jordan age 55 years of Riverhead, Harbour Grace. The late Mr. Jordan had been receiving medical attention for several months prior to his death.
He leaves to mourn their sad loss, his wife, the former Carmel Sullivan of Riverhead, Harbour Grace and four daughters; Jean and Shirley at home; Ruth at Toronto and Helen, Mrs. Patrick Donolly of Carbonear; also seven sons; William, Kevin, Donald, Clarence and Gordon at Harbour Grace, Gerald at Corner Brook and Jerome at Mono Mills, studying to become a Christian Brother; also three sisters; Mrs. Bessie Reynolds and Mrs. Beatrice McCarthy at Harbour Grace and Mrs. Mary Johnson at Bell Island; also five brothers; Michael at Harbour Grace, Andrew, St. John's and Morris and Arthur at Ferryland, Edward at Witless Bay and 15 grandchildren. The funeral took place at 10 A.M. from his late residence, Riverhead to St. Joseph's Church where Msgr. J. O'Brien, Fathers Antle and Brophy were celebrants at High Mass. Interment was at the R.C. Cemetery.

LEGGE, Joseph Alexander

HEART'S DELIGHT - The community of Heart's Delight was shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Joseph Alexander Legge (known to his relatives and friends as "Sandy" or "San") on October 23rd at the age of 75. He was the second youngest son of the late John and Lydia Legge of this community . In his early years he left Newfoundland to seek employment in the United States where he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honourably discharged, due to a heart condition. He was given a certificate by the State of Maine after the First World War was over. While in the United States he worked his way up to a mill-wright and then to a handsaw filer. He moved from Van Buren to the Hammond Lumber Company at California, then to Eureka, California in 1929 to return home to visit his father who was ill. That summer he started cod fishing with his father and brother Enos, coasting Trinity Bay to Bay Bulls Island. In 1936, he found employment with Saunders, Howell Co., Carbonear, as an handsaw filer where he worked for 11 years. Returning to Heart's Delight in 1947 he started a retail grocery and dry goods business which he continued until his death. He joined the society of United Fisherman No. 6 in 1913 and had the third degree. The members of the Society attended his funeral in a body and minstered the last rites of the society. He was a person never too busy with his own chores to give a helping hand to the neighbour or friend. Although in failing health for the past eighteen years, many people were not aware since he kept his complaints to himself and worked hard every day from 6 a.m. til dark. He leaves to mourn a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral took place from his late residence to St. Matthew's Anglican Church. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery, Heart's Delight on October 25. Services at home and church were conducted by Rev. W.T. Brown. Music at the home was played by Mrs. Clara Earle and at the Church by Mrs. Janie Sooley.

LIDSTER, Raymond
THE COMPASS, 23 October 1969

CUPIDS - Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. John Lidster on the death of their son Raymond, who passed away suddenly Sunday October 5. He leaves to mourn besides his father and mother, one sister Isobelle, seven brothers, Tom, Jim, John, Bill, Frank, Edward, and Joseph. Interment was at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Brigus. Rev. Father G.B. Pumphrey officiated. Tom and John flew home from Hamilton; Edward and Joseph motored from Toronto and Isobelle from Detroit to attend the funeral.

LYNCH, Jean Rosalind

UPPER ISLAND COVE - The memory of Jean Rosalind Lynch will long be remembered in this community. Jean, aged 15 years and the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lynch, Spoon Cove, died October 17, 1969 at the Toronto General Hospital. Jean was a quiet, pleasant girl who was well liked by everyone. During her short lifetime she was an active member of the St. Peter's Branch of the Junior Auxiliary then the Girls' Auxiliary when her health made it impossible to attend. Because of her illness, the eighth grade was her last. During her two years of illness she spent lengthy periods of time at the Janeway Children's Hospital, St. John's and the Community Red Cross Hospital at Carbonear, then in September of this year, thanks to the kindness of many people in the surrounding area, her parents took her to Toronto where her life ended. She leaves to mourn her sad loss her parents, two brothers, Calvin, a first year student at Memorial University and Randolph at Home; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David Lynch, Spoon Cove and Mr. and Mrs. James Mercer Sr., Newtown Road, as well as a large number of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The funeral took place from St. Peter's Anglican Church on October 21. The pallbearers were six younger members of the community. They were Rendell Mercer, Rendell Drover, Robert Parsons, Don Drover, William Mercer and Tom Mercer. The services in the church and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. F.R. Rowsell who was assisted by Rev. S. Payne of Bay Roberts Parish. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery. Deepest sympathy to the sorrowing family.

MARTIN, Joshue
THE COMPASS, 16 October 1969

GRATE'S COVE - Passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's October 2, Mr. Joshue Martin in his 88th year. Uncle Josh as he was knwon (sic) by the people of this community was a former resident of Grate's Cove and moved to Topsail to live a few years ago. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road, St. John's. Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of the late Mr. Martin.

MEADUS, Sarah

GRATE'S COVE - Passed away in hospital at Toronto on October 18 Mrs. Sarah Meadus at the age of 69. She was the wife of Frank Meadus. They were the former residents of Grate's Cove, but left 30 years ago to take residence at Toronto. The late Mrs. Meadus was born at Hickman's Harbour, Trinity Bay and was the former Sarah Martin. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family from relatives and friends at Grate's Cove.

CLARKE'S BEACH - Mrs. Emma Mugford, aged 82 passed peacefully away at her residence Clarke's Beach on Saturday, October 18. Leaving to mourn are one son Anthony at home and one daughter Emily, Mrs. William Morgan, residing at Brigus Junction. Funeral service at the United Church, Clarke's Beach, conducted by the Minister Rev. Murley. Special Anthem sung by the Choir "Will the Circle be Unbroken." Interment in the U.C. Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved families.

NOONAN, Edward

NORTHERN BAY - Passed peacefully away on October 28, Edward Noonan in his 88th year. He was the oldest gentlemen (sic) in this community and was well and active up to the day of his death. He was well liked by young and old and took a keen interest in everything in life.
His wife, Mary, predeceased him 22 years ago. He left to mourn his daughter Mary, Mrs. Cyril Hogan, with whom he resided; three sons, Patrick, Michael and Vincent; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, four nieces and one nephew.
His son Michael arrived home from England to attend the funeral. The funeral took place at his late residence to the Corpus Christi Church, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Msgr. E.J. O'Brine, P.P., Rev. Fr. Lawlor and Fr. Pumphrey. Interment was in the family plot.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away on October 8, at her late residence, Noad Street, Harbour Grace, Mrs. Esau Noseworthy in her 83rd year. The late Mrs. Noseworthy, the former Elizabeth Slade was a lifetime resident of Harbour Grace. She leaves to mourn, one sister, Mary, Mrs. Robert Clark at Sydney; and 2 brothers, William at Stephenville, and George at Sydney; also 3 grandsons, Arthur at Harbour Grace; Fred at Toronto and Maxwell in Toronto; also 4 great-grandchildren; Elizabeth, Joy, Sharon and Max. The funeral took place from her late residence to St. Paul's Anglican Church. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. D.M. Pearce.

PARSONS, Theadore

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at his late residence on October 8 Mr. Theadore Parsons in his 57th year. The late Mr. Parsons, a former resident of Harbour Grace South moved to Bear's Cove, Harbour Grace to reside many years ago. He leaves to mourn their sad loss his wife, the former Rita Adams, his father, Mr. Norman Parsons and four sisters; Mrs. Margaret Hunt, Mrs. Katherine Taylor, Jessie, Mrs. Harvey Chipman at Harbour Grace and Rose, Mrs. Harvey Bryant; of Hickman's Harbour; also three foster children, John and George Hayes of Scarborough, Ontario and Edward Hayes at Camp Petawawa. The funeral took place from his late residence to the United Church. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. C. Hobbs.

RIDEOUT, Pearl

CLARKE"S BEACH - Passed peacefully away at Grace Hospital, St. John's on October 20, Pearl, wife of Brigadier Willis Rideout, resident of South River - Clarke's Beach. She leaves to mourn besides her husband three sons, David and Robert in Calgary; Stanley in Winnipeg; one daughter Robin, Mrs. C. Mertz in North Bay, Ontario; two sisters, Rita in St. Catharines and Mabel in Vermont; also nine grandchildren. The funeral took place from the Salvation Army Citadel, Springdale Street on October 22. Interment was in the Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road. Sincere sympathy to the bereaved families.

RIDEOUT, Pearl

CLARKE'S BEACH - Mrs. Brigadier Pearl Rideout was laid to rest in the Salvation Army Officers Plot on October 22 at Blackmarsh Road, St. John's. Mrs. Rideout suffered for a long time but very patiently in the Grace Hospital. She was always bright and had great blessings to convey to others. Her Christian union with her Lord was well demonstrated during her long stay in hospital. Many of the patients who were admitted to her room during her illness will ever remember the words of comfort and encouragement a dying woman conveyed to others. A Memorial service was conducted in the Salvation Army Citadel at Clarke's Beach by Brigadier B.F. Hallett (R). The Citadel was filled for the occasion and very high tributes were paid to her by several speakers, including Mrs. Major R.H. Cole, Mrs. Brigadier A. Churchill and Mr. E.H. Reid, C.S.M. who represented the Corps in general. The band played a very fitting selection entitled: "Promoted to Glory." Mrs. Rideout was a very active member in all branches of the Church and Society. She was the life of the party at the Home League meetings, a strong singer in the songsters, and a very active officer in the L.O.B.A. and Crystal Chapter. During the memorial service the deceased was represented for the Lodges by the worshipful Grand Mistress, Mrs. Delphine White who also read the Scriptures. Captain L. Brinston, the Corps officer, spoke very highly of her during the morning service and considered Mrs. Rideout to be God's interpreter of his great love to humanity. Mrs. Rideout leaves to mourn her husband Brigadier Willis Rideout, South River; three sons, Stanley, David and Robert and one daughter Robin all of whom are residing in Western Canada. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved families.

BISHOP'S COVE - Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. John E. Smith and family on the death of their daughter Lizzie at the Carbonear Hospital on October 2. Sympathy is also extended to Mr. Lewis Drover and family, Spaniard's Bay on the death of a dear wife and mother.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital, St. John's on October 19, Mr. James Thomey of Harbour Grace in his 66th year. The late Mr. Thomey was a former resident of Bristol's Hope and moved to Harbour Grace to reside 17 years ago. He was an employee of the Harbour Grace Town Council and worked there until just a few days before his death. Left to mourn are his wife Susie, two daughters, Catherine and Deborah two sisters, Alice at Bristol's Hope and Kitty, Mrs. Patrick Donolly of Carbonear; also 3 step sons; James, Herman and Thomas Harris and two step-daughters; Rita, Mrs. Howard Cobb and Isabelle, Mrs. Stanley Murphy, also 17 grandchildren. The funeral took place from Parsons Funeral Home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Interment was at the R.C. Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Msgr. J. O'Brine.

USHORNE, Edna
THE COMPASS, 30 October 1969

BLAKETOWN - Passed away suddenly at her home on October 5, Edna, beloved wife of John Ushorne. The deceased, who was in her 62nd year, was the former Edna Dawe of Port de Grave. She was a friend to all, she gave willingly of her help to all who needed it, especially to the church and school. Left to mourn beside her husband are her mother, Mrs. Edith Dawe of Bay Roberts; one son Donald, now residing at Toronto; one daughter, Alma, Mrs. H.M. Day; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby, Mrs. Harold Petten of Hibbs Cove; Irene, Mrs. Cecil Parsons of Bay Roberts; two brothers, William and Hayward, both of Port de Grave. The funeral service which was conducted by Rev. White assisted by Rev. Payne was held in the Anglican Church. Deepest sympathy is extended to all the families. Her sister, Doris, Mrs. Reginald Jacobs, predeceased her on September 23.

OBITUARY - Mark White died October 18 after a period of failing health. He was born October 18, 1886, son of Joseph and Louisa White, Victoria, Carbonear. The contributor of this notice believes that he may have a sister, Mary Jane White (Harmon) or some of her family, still living in Newfoundland....
[TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: Mark White was born at Victoria, NL, and passed away at Concord, NH. His sister, Mary Jane White (1884-1948), married Stephen James Harnum (1874-1956) from Green's Harbour, NL. There were two brothers who died in infancy.]

WILSON, Sarah
THE COMPASS, 06 November 1969

CLARKE'S BEACH - Mrs. Sarah Wilson passed peacefully away at her home in South River on Sunday, October 19 in her 86th year. She leaves to mourn two daughters, Minnie (Mrs. Arthur Dawe) Clarke's Beach, and Dorothy, (Mrs. William LeDrew) South River, one grandson Clarence R. Dawe postmaster at Clarke's Beach, one great-grandson Oral Dawe, two brothers Fred Butler at South River and John B. Butler residing in the U.S.A., also a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Pentecostal Church Clarkes Beach on Tuesday, October 21. It was conducted by Pastor Bursey. The large attendance and floral tributes were an indication of the high esteem in which she was held. Interment was the family plot in the Pentecostal Cemetery beside her husband who predeceased her twenty years ago. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved families.

YOUNG, Bertha M

SPANIARD'S BAY - One of the best known business women of Conception Bay passed away at the Carbonear Hospital on Thursday, October 16. She was Mrs. Bertha M. Young, wife of John Young, of Upper Island Cove, She was born at Upper Island Cove on August 26, 1894, the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Young; she was the last surviving member of that family. She was educated at St. Peter's School and after that she taught one year at Jamestown in Bonavista Bay, following which she joined the staff of St. Peter's where she continued her teaching career for another seven. In 1923 she married John Young and together they built a general business now known as John Young and Son Limited. But Mrs. Young did not devote all her energy in business life; she was an untiring community worker as well. She was the first Worthy Mistress of Glencoe LOBA and after that she acted as treasurer for many years. She was a member of St. Peter's CEWA for over fifty years and for most of this time held the post of treasurer. She was for a number of years the treasurer of the District Branch of the CEWA. During the war years (1939-45) she was a driving force in the town's Women's Patriotic Association; in fact she was depended upon to take an interested and active part in all community affairs. Her encouraging words to the sick, whom she visited often, were always appreciated. She was awarded the Centennial Medal in 1967 "for valuable service to the Nation", a merit recognition well deserved. Her remains rested at Young's Funeral Home (owned and operated by Mrs. Young's son Haig), Spaniard's Bay, until Sunday morning, when after prayers by the Rev. E. Willis, the funeral procession formed and proceeded to St. Peter's Church for Solemn Requiem of which the Rev. F. R. Rowsell was the celebrant, assisted by the Rev. R.B. Sweetland who also read the Office for the Burial of the Dead. Organist was Douglas Young, the deceased's grandson. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Carnell's Funeral Home, St. John's. Burial was in the family plot in the Anglican Cemetery at Upper Island Cove. Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter Marina (Mrs. Clyde Mercer, Downsview, Ontario), one step-daughter, Viola (Mrs. William Hammond, Bell Island), three sons, Dr. Randolph Young of Bay Roberts, Haig of Upper Island Cove, and Aubrey, dispatcher with Air Canada, Halifax, N.S., one step-son, Rev. John W. Young, Rector of St. Alban's Anglican Church, Sydney, N.S. To all who mourn her passing sincere sympathy is extended. - (A Friend).
