BARTER, Hubert
THE COMPASS, 04 December 1969

BAY DE VERDE - Hubert Barter died November 18 in his eightieth year. The late Mr. Barter was confined to his home for a long time and he accepted his afflictions without a sign of annoyance. The deceased was a veteran fisherman and a successful one, undoubtedly adding to the prosperity of this province's original industry. Mr. Barter played an active role in his church having served as warden and a member of the select vestry on a number of occasions. Leaving to mourn are five James at Goose Bay; a daughter Evelyn, Mrs. Clarence Tuck and Doris, Mrs. Cecil Smith. The funeral took place from his home to the Anglican Cemetery. He was laid to rest beside his wife who predeceased him several years ago.

CRITCH, Melina
THE COMPASS, 20 November 1969

HANTS HARBOUR - "To know her was to love her": this can truly be said of Miss Melina Critch who passed away suddenly Nov. 8 in her 78th year. Miss Critch was well known, as she was Postmistress here for over thirty years, and made many friends. To her, all were equal and she treated all as friends. She had not been sick, in fact that very afternoon she had been out visiting friends who were going away for the winter months. For the past twenty-nine years she has lived with her brother James and his wife, and it is hard to visualize the Critch home without this quiet pleasant woman whose ready smile and outstretched hand was always there to welcome anybody who came to visit. She leaves to mourn one brother, James, a number of nieces and nephews. She was always known to them as "Aunt Leanie." Funeral services were conducted by Rev. T.P. Moulton in the United Church November 10. She was laid to rest in the United Church Cemetery.

CRITCH, Melina

WINTERTON - Mrs. Edgar Green received the sad news of the sudden passing of her aunt, Miss Melina Critch. She was Postmistress of that community for many years until her retirement. She was 78.

CROCKER, Jessie
THE COMPASS, 18 November 1969

GREEN'S HARBOUR - As the sun was slowly sinking in the west, on the last day of November, there passed peacefully away Mrs. Jessie Crocker, beloved wife of Heber Crocker. She would have celebrated her 66th birthday on December 22. Jessie was a very nice person. All through her life she carried a friendly smile and was never known to wear frown. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife. All her family are away from home, but all except William who is not feeling so well, arrived home in time for the funeral. It was held on December 2 and conducted by Brigadier Thompson at the Salvation Army Citadel.
Jessie had been confined to her home for about ten years and during that time her husband Heber took care of her, as only a devoted and loving husband can. At the Funeral service, "My beautiful home" was sung by the members of the Home League, while Victor Crocker, a cousin of the family, sang, "I have a home that is fairer than day." The respect and esteem of her many friends was very well shown by the many wreaths and flowers which adorned the casket. She leaves to mourn her husband, Heber, five sons, Leslie, Clement, Roy, Donald and William in Toronto, three daughters, Carrie, Mrs. Walter Crane at Toronto; Hazel, Mrs. Norman Egan at P.E.I., and Jane, Mrs. Wallace Cote, at Broomfield, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland; sixteen grandchildren, two brothers, Walter and Edward Green at Green's Harbour and two step-sisters, Lillie, Mrs. T. Rodgers at Green's Harbour and Sarah at Boston, U.S.A. Mrs. Calvin Taylor was organist for the service, all arrangements were taken care off (sic) by "Barrett's Funeral Service" from Whitbourne. Interment was at the Salvation Army Cemetery.

DALE, June

BAY ROBERTS - Passed peacefully away at the Senior Citizens Home, Clarke's Beach, Mrs. June Dale, in her 83rd year. She leaves to mourn two sons, Harold and Jim at Bay Roberts; also two daughters, Pearl, Mrs. William Wells of Toronto; and Mrs. W. Noel of Freshwater, Carbonear. The funeral took place from her residence to the United Church. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery. The Service was conducted by Rev. C. Stanford.

EDMUNDS, Jane

MAKINSONS - We regret to announced (sic) the passing of one of the older citizens. Passed peacefully away at her son's residence Dunville, Mrs. Jane Edmunds in her 82nd year. She leaves to mourn her sad loss, two sons and three daughters: Robert at Dunville, Richard at home, Alice (Mrs. John Abbott), Springfield Road, Makinsons; Dorothy (Mrs. John Abbot) Springfield; Elizabeth (Mrs. John Cummings) Goulds Road; also 38 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral with Requiem Mass took place at St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Brigus. She was laid to rest in the family plot, R.C. Cemetery, Brigus November 5.

GREEN, Leah

WINTERTON - Passed away on November 20 Mrs. Leah Green widow of John Green of Winterton. She was ninety-four years old. Mr. and Mrs. Green left Winterton many years ago and resided at Grand Falls. Later they went to Toronto with their son Cecil and family. Following the death of her husband she made her home with her daughter Annie, Mrs. Rideout at Corner Brook. This past summer she and her daughter visited friends and relatives here and thoroughly enjoyed visiting and renewing old acquaintances. She leaves to mourn two sons, Cecil and Harry, in Toronto, two daughters, Rhoda, (Mrs. Saunders), Bishops Falls, and Annie, Mrs. Rideout of Corner Brook. Interment was at Corner Brook.

HARNUM, Martha
THE COMPASS, 11 December 1969

ISLINGTON - Passed away at Islington on November 20, at her son's residence, Mrs. Martha Harnum in her 89th year. She leaves to mourn her son, Sidney, daughter-in-law, Evelyn, seven grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was a life-long member of the A.C.W.A. of Islington and also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary No. 4 of Heart's Delight. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.T. Brown. Burial was at the Anglican cemetery at Heart's Delight.

HEFFORD, William

NEW PERLICAN - Mrs. Mary Clarke of New Perlican received the sad news recently that her brother, William, aged 75, passed peacefully away in England. William Hefford was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Hefford. He joined the first World War forces and married in England while the war was on. He didn't return home after. He leaves to mourn his sad loss, wife, two daughters, two brothers, Leonard and Abraham at Toronto; four sisters, Naino and Ethel at St. John's; Fannie at Winterton and Mary at New Perlican. Deepest sympathy to the family.

HINDY, Heber
THE COMPASS, 11 December 1969

WINTERTON - Passed peacefully away at his home on Sunday, November 30, Heber Hindy age 68. Born at Winterton he as the only son of Eleazer and Caroline Hindy. He was only thirteen when his father died and he had to work to help support the family. He was employed with E.J. Green and Company for thirty years, at Thoroughfare, St. Juliens, and later at their fish premises, Winterton. He did an honest days work faithfully and well. In 1967 he underwent a slight operation on his face and returned to his employment again. Early in 1969 he consulted a specialist at St. John's and prolonged treatment at the General Hospital, St. John's while staying at the Cancer Hostel. After returning home he gradually grew worse and the end came as a release from his intense suffering. He was a member of the L.O.L., No. 78, The Royal Black Preceptory, and was the Master of L.O.A. when the L.O.B.A., Royal Visit Lodge was formed here. He was a charter member of that order. The members of the three lodges attended in a body to pay their last respects at his funeral. He leaves to mourn his wife, Livie, one sister, Mrs. Millie Chislett of Cavendish, one step-sister, Mrs. Bessie Chislett, Cavendish, several nieces and nephews at Grand Bank and Sydney. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. MaCabe (sic). Interment was in the United Church Cemetery.

HUMBY, Emmie
THE COMPASS, 27 November 1969

CARBONEAR - There passed away at the Carbonear Community Red Cross Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, November 19, Mrs. Emmie Humby, in her 59th year. Left to mourn are her husband, George, and two daughters, Gilda and Jean. Gilda is on the teaching staff of Curtis Academy, St. John's, and Jean is a second year student at Memorial University. The largely attended funeral, including the students of her Grade V class of last year, was held on Friday, November 21, from Noel's Funeral Home, with the Rev. N. Winsor of Carbonear United Church officiating, assisted by Rev. T.R. Mills of Victoria-Freshwater Pastoral Charge. Interment was in the Freshwater Cemetery. Mrs. Humby was on the teaching staff of the Carbonear South Side school for the past few years, and, prior to this, taught at Freshwater, her former home, and in other communities throughout the province, completing some twenty-four years in the profession. A devoted member of her church, Mrs. Humby always took a very active part in church and community affairs. For a number of years she was an executive member of the Women's Missionary Society Presbyterial, and, at the time of her death was president of Unit 4 of United Church Women, Carbonear. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

HUSSEY, Gordon

UPPER ISLAND COVE - In loving memory of Gordon Hussey, died November 24, 1968, aged 36 years, on a business trip to Grand Falls. He was living at Mount Pearl but formerly of Upper Island Cove. - Ever remembered and sadly missed by mother, sister Rosella and brother Leander.

KELLY, Olive

COLEY'S POINT - The whole community was shocked and saddened by the tragic accident which occurred on Nov. 19 and took the life of Mrs. Allan (Olive) Kelly. Her car, which she was driving to Bay Roberts, plunged into the water near her home. Her sudden death will long be remembered by all who knew her. Olive was a devoted member of the Anglican church, Coley's Point, which she loved so well. She was always ready to offer a helping hand in all work of the church. She was a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher, Leader of the Girls Auxiliary, a member of the A.C.W.A. The night before she met her death, she attended an A.C.W.A. meeting which happened to be on her 33rd birthday. The Girl's Auxiliary and A.C.W.A. as well as the choir, attended her funeral in a body. The funeral was largely attended and took place from Baggs funeral home, Bay Roberts, to the Anglican Church and cemetery, Coley's Point. The funeral service which was very impressive was conducted by Rev. Payne, assisted by Rev. White of Whitbourne. Left to mourn their sad loss are husband Allan, parents Mr. And Mrs. John Roach, brother, Ralph, sister-in-law Joyce, (Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Kelly) and many relatives and friends.

KENNEDY, Elizabeth

HARBOUR GRACE - On Tuesday, November 18th the Town of Harbour Grace lost one of its best known and much loved citizens when Mrs. William B. Kennedy passed away at the Carbonear Community Hospital. Although her illness had caused her severe suffering for a over a year, still the death of Lizzie Kennedy came as a shock to her family and numerous friends. She had fought so gallantly and cheerfully against her illness that only her immediate family realized that death was so near and despite all medical aid she secumbed (sic) in her sixty first year. She was born Elizabeth Moriarty, eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Moriarty of Harbour Grace, where she acquired her early education at the Presentation Convent. After graduating from St. Bride's College, Littledale, she entered the teaching profession with the R.C. School Board at St. Brendan's under the Chairmanship of the late Father Walker and taught there for two years. From there she returned to Harbour Grace to continue teaching for a further eight years, at Otterbury and Bristol's Hope, where, by her efforts, a C.H.E. Examination Centre was opened for the first time. During this time she became active in Church and Social affairs, being President of the Sodality of the Children of Mary, a member of the Altar Society, an officer of the Dalton Ladies Association, President of the Cathedral Ladies Association and also member of the Cathedral Dramatic Troupe. In 1936, she married William B. Kennedy of Harbour Grace going with him to Aguathuna, where he was engaged in the teaching profession for five years. When they returned to Harbour Grace in 1941 she resumed her activities in Social, Civic and Church affairs of the community as: Secretary Treasurer of the Memorial Library, Women's Auxiliary, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the local branch of the Navy League of Canada, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade, onetime Chairman of the baking and homecrafts section of the Trinity-Conception Agricultural Fair and consecutively prominent in Red Cross work as: Campaign Chairman, member of the Blood Donor Procurement committee, member of the Women's Work group and Chairman of the Sick Room Loan services Committee. During the past summer the Canadian Red Cross in recognition of her outstanding services awarded her a certificate of Merit.
The funeral services held in the Church of the Immaculate Conception consisted of a Mass of Concelebration, said by: Rt. Rev. Monsigneur Joseph M. O'Brien Chief Celebrant, Co-celebrants Rev. Fr. A. Antle, Rev. Fr. E. Brophy, Rev. Fr. E. Hearn, Rev. Fr. R. Walsh, Rev. Fr. C. Strang S.F.M. and Rev. Fr. R. Moore S.F.M. also present in the Sanctuary were Rt. Rev. Mons. J.W. Peddle V.G. and Rt. Rev. Monsgr. E.J. O'Brien, State Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus. The Epistle was read by Rev. Bro. R. Hall, Principal of St. Francis Central High School. The St. Francis Senior Boys Choir was directed by Rev. Bro. G. Blackmore. The final prayers both at the Church and at the graveside were said by Rev. Fr. Craig Strang, S.F.M. Besides her husband William, she leaves to mourn four children: Marry (sic), Mrs. Roland Morin, Ottawa; Regina, Mrs. John (sic) well as her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Moriarty, three brothers, John and Stephen of St. John's, Rev. Edward B, S.F.M. of Toronto and three sisters: Patricia, Mrs. Francis Cochrane, St. John's; Paula, Mrs. Michael Browne, Grand Falls and Philomena, Mrs. M.J. Stapleton, Ottawa. To all those bereaved heartfelt sympathy is extended.

LURSON, Fred
THE COMPASS, 27 November 1969

PORT DE GRAVE - People of Port de Grave were shocked on Wednesday when word was received from the U.S.A. of the death of Fred Lurson. Mr. Lurson was married to Ruth, daughter of Don and the late Winnifred Andrews, former merchants of Ship Cove. His illness was of short duration and his death came unexpectedly. This summer, they along with their five daughters, motored from the U.S.A. in their trailer and spent part of their holiday at the old home town renewing old acquaintances and attending service at the church of her childhood. The whole community unites in offering sincere sympathy to the family.

LYNCH, John Robert

UPPER ISLAND COVE - Passed peacefully away at his late residence after a short illness, John Robert Lynch in his 80th year. Left to mourn his sad loss are two daughters, Violet (Mrs. James H. Parsons) and Mary (Mrs. John Lundrigan), three sons, Llewellyn, George and Walter, all of Upper Island Cove, one sister, Sarah (Mrs. Arch Lynch), five brothers, David, Arthur, Mark and Arch at Upper Island Cove and Joseph at Toronto, Ontario, also 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. His wife predeceased him seven years ago. Mr. Lynch was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge for 64 years and the members of that society attended his funeral as a body. Funeral services took place Nov. 17 with Rev. F.R. Rowsell officiating. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery.

NOFTLE, Alfred

BROAD COVE - Passed peacefully away at the home of Mr. George Swain, Broad Cove on November 8, Mr. Alfred Noftle in his eighty-third year. Funeral services were held in the Broad Cove United Church and were conducted by Rev. S.T. Bown. Interment was in the United Church cemetery.

CARBONEAR - Passed peacefully away at her son's residence, Salmon Cove, Carbonear, on November 10, Mrs. Lucy Penney, widow of the late Norman Penney of Perry's Cove, in her 81st year. She leaves to mourn, two sons, Moses Richard, with whom she resided, and Ernest of Collingwood, Ontario and one daughter, Mary, Mrs. George E. Wareham of Carbonear. Twenty grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. Interment took place at Salmon Cove with Rev. Curtis conducting the funeral service. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

ROBERTS, Edward

UPPER GULLIES - Passed peacefully away at the Grace General Hospital, November 7, Mr. Edward Roberts of Upper Gullies in his 86th year. The late Mr. Roberts was one of the best-known and oldest members of the community. He was known as "Uncle Ned." Left to mourn are his wife Virtue, one son George of Upper Gullies, three daughters Susie, Mrs. James Whelan of Marysvale; Mary, Mrs. Duke Woodman of Upper Gullies and Edna, Mrs. George Haines also of Upper Gullies and 19 grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of the L.O.A. The funeral took place from his late residence on November 9 to St. Peter's Anglican Church. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. David Genge with the L.O.A. Band in attendance. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

UPPER GULLIES - Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Charles Simmons of Seal Cove on the death of his son in California. Mr. Simmons left by plane for California on Saturday, November 15. The funeral took place Nov. 18.

BISHOP'S COVE - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital, St. John's, November 8, Mr. Walter Smith, in his 88th year. A few years ago he had the misfortune to fall and break his hip, this slowed him up somwhat (sic) but he still was very energetic and could enjoy his favorite hobby, boat-building. He was a highly respected citizen and very interested in everything beneficial to the community. He was a past preceptor of Arc of Unity R.B.P. No. 1270, and past master of Hearts of Oak Lodge No. 28, as well as a member of Clift Lodge (Masonic Order) Bell Island, which was represented at the funeral. Sir Knights from Arc of Unity R.B.P. acted as pall bearers. The remains rested at Young's Funeral Home, Spaniard's Bay until Tuesday at 2;30 p.m. The funeral, which was largely attended was held at St. John the Evangelist Church, Bishop's Cove and burial took place at the Anglican cemetery here. Rev. F.R. Rowsell conducted the service at the church and graveside. Left to mourn are four daughters, Edith, Mrs. John F. Sheppard, Spaniard's Bay; Mabel, Mrs. Frank Sheppard, Spaniard's Bay; Myrtle, Mrs. Stephen Tucker, Placentia and Flora, Mrs. John Williams, Bishops Cove; two sons, Israel at Harbour Grace; and Louis at Bishop's Cove, with whom he resided; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To the bereaved family deepest sympathy is extended.

STONE, John C.

BRYANT'S COVE - The people of Bryant's Cove were shocked and saddened by the sudden death on November 24 of Mr. John C. Stone in his 64th year. He was visiting his son at Clarenville when he took ill and in a couple of hours he had passed away.
Mr. Stone was a loving husband and father and was devoted to his church, he being the people's warden at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Loyal Orange Association and a charter member of the C.E.A.A. at Bryant's Cove. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
He went to the Labrador fishery with planters as a boy and later in life he did some farming. In his early married life he carried on a freighting service between Bell Island and the Mainland in Conception Bay; he then become (sic) a shore fishermen (sic) and prosecuted the shore fishery up to the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his wife, the former Annie Spurrell of Harbour Grace South, four daughters, Minnie, Mrs. Walter E. Parsons, Labrador City; Grace, Mrs. Reginald Sheppard, Harbour Grace South; Florence, Mrs. Eugene Coombs, Upper Island Cove and Elizabeth, Mrs. Gordon Taylor of Carbonear, also two sons, Gordon and Roland, one sister, Mrs. Winnie Parsons of Bryant's Cove and one brother Albert of Harbour Grace and a wide circle of friends. The funeral took place from his late residence to St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Bryant's Cove. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery. The service was performed by the Rector Rev. F.R. Rowsell, assisted by Rev. Father Taylor of Port de Grave. Organist for the occasion was Mr. Fred Morris. Funeral arrangements were made by Mr. Haig Young of Upper Island Cove. The family of the late Mr. Stone wishes to thank all of those who helped in any way to alleviate their sorrow by sending telegrams, cards, flowers, or helping in any way. The Compass joins with the people of Bryant's Cove in extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

THOMEY, Mary

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away on Nov. 6 at her late residence, Cochrane Street, Harbour Grace, Mrs. Arthur Thomey in her 73rd year. The late Mrs. Thomey, was the former Mary Coady of Harbour Grace. She leaves to mourn their sad loss, 3 daughters; Camilla at home Joan, Mrs. William Doran, Harbour Grace and Mary, Mrs. James Elkin residing in Turkey also six sons John, Brendan and Mark at Harbour Grace, James at Argentia, Michael at St. John's and Ronald at Gander and two sisters; Sister Mary Camilla, St. Patrick's Convent, St. John's and Bride, Mrs. William Kelly at Gander also two brothers, Raymond and Michael at Harbour Grace, 34 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Her husband predeceased her just less than one year ago. The funeral took place from her late residence to the Church of the Immaculate Conception where a nephew, Father Coady was celebrant at High Requiem Mass, assisted by Msgr. J. O'Brien. Interment was in the R.C. Cemetery.

TUCKER, Eleazer

PORT DE GRAVE - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital, St. John's on November 10, Eleazer Tucker of Port de Grave in his 81st year. He had been in failing health for sometime (sic) and was taken to hospital November 3 but failed to respond to treatment and passed away one week later. Uncle "Leas" was of a very friendly disposition was well-known and liked by all who knew him. Many visitors came to his home and all were warmly welcomed. He will be missed by many. His funeral took place from his late residence Port de Grave to St. Luke's Church and cemetery on Bareneed Hills. The L.O.A. and R.B.P. of which he was a member escorted his remains to their last resting place. He leaves to mourn one sister Emmie, Mrs. Leander Mugford of Mass., U.S.A. and a number of other relatives. His wife Carrie predeceased him seven years ago. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. W. Taylor of Port de Grave.

TUCKER, Eleazer

PORT DE GRAVE - Mrs. Emmie Mugford and Mrs. Elizabeth Wrixon arrived home from the U.S.A., November 11 to attend the funeral of their late brother (and brother-in-law) Eleazer Tucker.

WALSH, Michael
THE COMPASS, 04 December 1969

BAY DE VERDE - Michael Walsh died at the General Hospital in St. John's November 22. The late Mr. Walsh was a model fisherman and lived a life of success and independence. He was a man of quiet character and carried on his work with pride and pleasure. After retiring from the fishing operations, he served as caretaker at the local fish plant and demonstrated real ability. The funeral took place from his home. A wreath, formed like an anchor covered the casket. Two altar boys, carrying wooden crosses, preceeded the procession to the Church of the Assumption where Rev. Fr. Michael Walsh, P.P., performed burial rights. Mr. Walsh is survived by his wife.

WHELAN, Sharon Ann

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away on November 24 Sharon Ann Whelan age 18 years, daughter of Mr. James and the late Theresa Whelan of Harbour Grace South. The late Miss Whelan who had been an invalid all her life, passed away at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Hearn. Mrs. Hearn had been caring for Sharon for the past three years. She leaves to mourn her father and one brother Stephen at Harbour Grace South, also her brother Terrance at Labrador City. The funeral took place from Parsons Funeral Home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The funeral service was conducted by Father A. Antle. Interment was at the R.C. Cemetery.

YETMAN, George W

BRYANT'S COVE - On November 19 death, as it must to all men, came to and (sic) old and respected citizen of Bryant's Cove in the person of George W. Yetman. The deceased was in his 86th year and had been in ill health for a number of years. However, he possessed a courage that was a trademark of the people of his time. In his younger days he worked in the iron ore mines on Bell Island and as a fishermen (sic). He leaves to mourn their sad loss his wife Sarah, three daughters, Violet, Mrs. Simeon Stone of Harbour Grace; Bessie, Mrs. James Ludlow of Windsor, Newfoundland; Mary, Mrs. Richard Noseworthy of Spaniard's Bay; six sons, George E. Yetman of Bryant's Cove; William Yetman of Dunville, James at Buchans, Thomas at Harbour Grace; Frank at Coley's Point and Walter at Mount Pearl. He also left a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a wide circle of friends as was evidenced by the many car loads of visitors who came to see him during his illness and sent cards and wreaths to his family and helped during their bereavement. To all those, his wife Sarah and family wish to express their thanks. The funeral which was largely attended took place from his late residence at Bryant's Cove to St. Andrews Anglican Church and cemetery, Bryant's Cove. The funeral service was conducted by the Rector F.R. Rowsell. Organist for the occasion was Fred Morris of Harbour Grace. All his sons and daughters were in attendance at the funeral service. The people of Bryant's Cove wish to express their sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

GEORGETOWN - Passed peacefully away on Nov. 7, at the Grace General Hospital, St. John's, Mrs. Laura E. Youden in her 74th year.
