ANTLE, Suzanna
THE COMPASS, 29 May 1969

VICTORIA - Passed away at her home in Victoria, May 14, Mrs. Suzanna Antle at the age of 79. Left to mourn are her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Antle, with whom she resided, 2 daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Fred Northcott), Carbonear and Minnie (Mrs. William Anthony), Upper Gullies, 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral took place from her home on May 16.

BARTLETT, Stanley
THE COMPASS, 05 June 1969

BRIGUS - Passed away at Buchans, Friday, May 23 following a mining accident, Stanley Bartlett, Georgetown age 60 years. He leaves to mourn his wife, one son Nath and a number of grandchildren. His funeral took place at the Hope United Church, Georgetown, May 25. The funeral was one of the largest ever to take place in Georgetown with the church filled to capacity and many unable to get inside it. Interment was in the U.C. cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

BARTLETT, Stanley
THE COMPASS, 05 June 1969

MARYSVALE - A tragic accident at Buchan's, May 24, claimed the life of Stan Bartlett, 62, of Georgestown. Mr. Bartlett has been working at Buchans for the past 26 years and last year moved his family there with him. He leaves to mourn besides his wife Susan, one son, Nathaniel and daughter-in-law, Freda, four grandsons. His burial took place in Georgestown United Church cemetery after service was conducted by Rev. Roland Wells. His funeral was attended by people from just about every community in Conception Bay. His friends and many co-workers travelled from Buchans. Also present for the funeral was the Hon. J.R. Chalker, Minister of Public Works.

BATTEN, Nathaniel
THE COMPASS, 15 May 1969

BELL ISLAND - The passing was recorded recently of a well known citizen of this community, in the person of the late Nathaniel Batten, in his sixty-eighth year. Following the closing of the Wabana Mining industry, he moved to the Canadian mainland with his family. He returned last year to reside in hi sold home town. He leaves to mourn his wife and three daughters, all residing in Ontario towns. The funeral took place from his late residence, Main Street. Following burial service at St. Cyrprians and at the graveside, he was laid to rest in the Anglican cemetery, Beach Hill.

BECKETT, William
THE COMPASS, 22 May 1969

OLD PERLICAN - Passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's, May 12, William Beckett of Old Perlican, aged 61. Leaving to mourn are his wife, Eva, one son, Alex, residing at Toronto, two brothers, James at Old Perlican and Samuel at Dunfield, one sister, Mrs. Leona Squires at Old Perlican and a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral took place on Wednesday. Enterment was at the United Church cemetery. Mr. Beckett will be sadly missed, as he was very active on church boards and in Sunday school. Rev. R. Wells of Brigus assisted Rev. T.C. Rodgers at the funeral services, at the church and graveside.

BLUNDON, Caroline
THE COMPASS, 29 May 1969
BAY DE VERDE - Passed away at Bay de Verde on May 9, Mrs. Caroline (Lockyer) Blundon in her 49th year. The late Mrs. Blundon was the daughter of the late Edward and Maud Lockyer of Bay de Verde and the wife of Herbert Blundon. Despite the fact that Mrs. Blundon spent one month in the St. John's General Hospital, her death came suddenly and somewhat unexpected. The funeral was to have taken place on Mother's Day but due to the late arrival of her son Herbert Jr. From Toronto, was postponed until the following day. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery at Bay de Verde with the Rev. K. L. Goldsworthy conducting the service. The family of the late Mrs. Blundon wish to express their sincerest thanks to the many people who endeavoured to be of assistance during their sad loss.

BURT, SELBY
THE COMPASS, 19 June 1969

GREEN'S HARBOUR - Passed away while out in a boat with his brother, Selby Burt in his 68th year. Mr. Burt had a heart condition for a number of years. On May 27, he felt like he would like to go out with his brother Stephen to his salmon nets. They had reached the net when Stephen noticed his brother lying in an awkward position. He asked him what was wrong but got no reply.
Selby was a fisherman all his life. He leaves to mourn his wife, Triffie; two brothers Stephen at Greens Harbour and Lotriph at St. John's; a sister Minnie, Mrs. James Collins at St. John's, and a large number of friends and relatives. The funeral was largely attended. Members of the Loyal Orange Association attended in a group.
Mr. Burt recently completed 50 years of continuous membership in the Association. The funeral service at the home and the Salvation Army Citadel was conducted by Capt. Thomas of the Green's Harbour Corps. He was assisted by Capt. Goulding of the New Harbour Dildo Corps and Rev. John Adams of the United Church, Green's Harbour. Interment was at the Salvation Army Cemetery.

BUSSEY, John
THE COMPASS, 19 June 1969
CLARKE'S BEACH - Passed peacefully away at his home, Salmon Cove, South River, May 31, John Bussey in his 88th year. Mr. Bussey returned from Grand Falls about three weeks ago where he spent this and several previous winters with his daughter, Neta (Mrs. George Noseworthy), coming home to live with his sons, Clifford and Lawton, during the summer months. He was feeling quite well and active up to the time of his death. Funeral took place Monday, June 2, from Moore's Funeral Parlour, Clarke's Beach, to All Saints Anglican Church, South River. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Canon Martin. Interment was at the Anglican cemetery, Salmon Cove. He leaves to mourn two daughters, May at Montreal and Neta at Grand Falls; Three sons, Harry residing at Montreal, and Clifford and Lawton at home. May and Harry were home from Montreal to attend the funeral, also Neta and her husband from Grand Falls. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved families.

BUTT, Donald
CULL, Gordon
THE COMPASS, 10 July 1969

BLACKHEAD - A memorial service for Donald Butt 18, and Gordon Cull 20, drowned May 26, was held in Blackhead United Church, Sunday, June 15. Rev. S. F. Bown conducted the service.

COLBOURNE, Albert
THE COMPASS, 22 May 1969

BRIGUS - Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Gordon Spracklin, on the death of her father, Albert Colbourne. Mr. Colbourne passed away at Cupids on Tuesday May 13. The funeral took place on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., from the residence of his daughter, Matilda, (Mrs. Gordon Spracklin) at Brigus to the Anglican Church. Rev. Canon Martin conducted the service. The casket, covered with the Union Jack was borne by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Bay Roberts Branch, who paid their last respects to the deceased, as they circled the grave, dropping poppies. The Legion ritual prayers were read by the Legion Chaplain.
"It is enough, earth's struggles soon shall cease,
And Jesus calls us to Heaven's perfect peace."

FOLLETT, Edison
THE COMPASS, 29 May 1969

WESTERN BAY - On May 9, the community of Western Bay was deeply shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Edison Follett, on board his fishing boat off Ochre Pit. Mr. Follett had been in failing health for some time, but his sudden passing was a shock to his family and friends at Western Bay. His widow and family wish to thank all his good friends and neighbours who helped in any way to alleviate their sorrow. A special word of thanks is extended to those who sent flowers and sympathy cards and also to the United Church minister Rev. Brown who performed the funeral service. Also, a very special thank you to Dr. O'Flaherty who attended the stricken man and who went beyond the line of duty to help soften the blow to the bereaved family.

HISCOCK, William
THE COMPASS, 05 June 1969

NEW PERLICAN - Passed peacefully away, May 20, after a short illness at Halifax, in his 70th year, William Hiscock, formerly of New Perlican. He leaves to mourn their sad loss one daughter, Emily, Mrs. Ernest Gardener of Halifax and one sister, Mrs. Sarah White, of New Perlican. Mr. Hiscock lived alone during the summer but moved to Halifax with his daughter for the winter. He was taken ill in April and had to be taken to the hospital in Halifax where he passed away. Mr. Hiscock was always known as Uncle Billy by the citizens of New Perlican. He was well liked by the children, mostly because he always had a funny story to tell them. Funeral took place from St. Augustine's Church, on May 24, conducted by Rev. A. Torraville. Interment at the Anglican cemetery.

KENNEDY, Madeline
THE COMPASS, 15 May 1969

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at the Grace General Hospital, St. John's, after a short illness, Mrs. Thomas Kennedy of Harbour Grace in her 63rd year. The late Mrs. Kennedy was the former Madeline Haire, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Haire of Harbour Grace. She leaves to mourn her husband; three sons, William at St. John's, Maurice at Grand Falls, and Frank at home; also two daughters, Marie - Mrs. Eric Burden, Goose Bay and Alice - Mrs. Gerald Saunders, St. John's; one sister, Mary - Mrs. John Farrell, Harbour Grace; six brothers, jack at Corner Brook, Maurice and Daniel at St. John's; Jerry and Michael at Harbour Grace; also 11 grandchildren. The funeral took place from Parsons Funeral Home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception where Rev. Father Antle officiated. Interment was at the R.C. Cemetery.

LeGROW, Thomas
THE COMPASS, 05 June 1969
BROAD COVE - Passed peacefully away at his home in Broad Cove North, May 24, Thomas LeGrow in his 71st year. He leaves to mourn his wife Beatrice, one sister Janie, Mrs. Reuben Hudson, Pouch Cove and two brothers Hudson at Broad Cove North and Harry, Brampton, Ontario. Funeral service, which was largely attended took place Blackhead United Church, May 26, and was conducted by Rev. S.F. Bowen and assisted by Rev. Dr. L.A.D. Curtis, a friend of the family. Mr. LeGrow was a very active member in the Church, being on most of the church boards and Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He will be sadly missed by young and old alike.

MARTIN, Walter
THE COMPASS, 12 June 1969

NEW PERLICAN - Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Martin of New Perlican who received the sad news May 25 of the passing of Mr. Martin's brother Walter Martin of Dildo. He was in his 60th year and was an Anglican teacher for a number of years.

MARTIN, William Joseph
THE COMPASS, 12 June 1969

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's on May 16, following a very brief illness, William Joseph Martin Harbour Grace in his 56th year. Mr. Martin was active up to a few days before his death, when he suddenly became ill while working. He served two years in the Newfoundland Forestry Unit overseas during 1940 and 1941.
Mr. Martin was the son of the late Absalom and Mary Martin also of Harbour Grace. He was married to the former Gladys Crocker of Heart's Delight.
He leaves to mourn his wife Gladys, two daughters, Judy at home and Daphne - Mrs. Fred Hutchings at Whitbourne; also one sister Gertrude - Mrs. John Aurick, Toronto and two brothers, Maxwell at Toronto and Absalom at Harbour Grace also two grandchildren.
The funeral took place from his late residence to St. Paul's Church. Interment was at the Anglican cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. L. A. Ludlow and fellow comrades of the Royal Canadian Legion also conducted a service at the home and at the graveside.

MILLEY, Mrs Robert
THE COMPASS, 22 May 1969

BURNT POINT - Passed peacefully away May 3, Mrs. Robert Milley, aged 74 years. Leaving to mourn her sad loss, two daughters, Edna, Mrs. Herbert Milley, Burnt Point, and Martha, at Toronto. Two sons, Duke at Burnt Point, and Kelso at Corner Brook, as well as one sister Gertrude, Mrs. Jordan Tucker at Burnt Point, a number of grand-children and great-grandchildren. Funeral took place from the United Church May 5 with Rev. E.G. Bailey officiating.

PINHORN, Robert
THE COMPASS, 12 June 1969

WINTERTON - Winterton's oldest resident, Robert Pinhorn passed away May 20, at the age of 93. He was born at Winterton and was a fisherman at Labrador, Baccalieu and out of Winterton. After his retirement, he went to Toronto and spent several years as a paying guest at the Senior Citizens home. In 1968, he returned to his native home again with his daughter Rose following the death of her husband James Kelland. They had settled in her new home just a few months when he was taken ill.
Uncle "Bob" as he was known, was active up until he was taken ill. Attended church services regularly, rarely missed a S.U.F. meeting; even this past winter he attended regular weekly meetings. He also enjoyed visiting his many friends and could relate interesting stories and happenings of long ago when he had to walk to Hant's Harbour, a distance of six miles, to buy a can of milk in exchange for a bundle of hoops. He wife died during the early years of their marriage, leaving him with two small children. He never remarried.
During his last illness, he was visited regularly by Rev. A. Torraville and attended by members of the S.U.F. His son Gerald came from Toronto and was with him at the time of his death. He also leaves to mourn his daughter, Mrs. Rose Kelland, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Toronto. Members of the S.U.F. and their band attended the funeral in a body. Service was conducted by Rev. A. Torraville. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery.

PITTS, Amy
THE COMPASS, 05 June 1969

NEW PERLICAN - Passed away at New Perlican May 23, Miss Amy Pitts in her 68th year. She leaves to mourn their sad loss, two brothers Joshua and Norman. Funeral took place from St. Augustine's Church, May 25. Interment at the Anglican cemetery.

ROBERTS, Henry "Harry"
THE COMPASS, 15 May 1969

BRIGUS - Passed peacefully away at his home Sunday, May 4, after a lengthy illness, Henry Harry) Roberts in his 76th year. He leaves to mourn his wife, Clara, one daughter, Henrietta, Mrs. Fraser Ellis, St. John's, two step-sons, Harrison Fry, Brigus, and Tom Fry at Montreal, also a number of grandchildren.
The funeral took place from his home, to the United Church on Tuesday, May 6. Service was conducted by Rev. R. Wells, speaking from Romans, Chapter 14, Verse 8, "Wehther we live or die, we are the Lord's". Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family.
"Two toil-worn hands in peace at last, The weary journey overpast The thorny pathway safely trod That leads through sorrow, home to God."

SMITH, Thomas
THE COMPASS, 08 May 1969

BISHOP'S COVE - Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. John F. Smith and family and Mrs. Abram Barrett and family, Spaniard's Bay on the passing of their brother, Mr. Thomas Smith, at Montreal.

TILLEY, John
THE COMPASS, 15 May 1969

OLD PERLICAN - Passed peacefully away at Old Perlican on Saturday May 3, after a long illness, John Tilley, age 83 years. Leaving to mourn are his wife Isabelle, on daughter Dorothy (Mrs. Robert Gorman), Salem, Mass.; three grandchildren, two brothers, Aaron and Herbert in the U.S.A., four nephews residing at Old Perlican and a large circle of friends. Funeral was held on May 5. Rev. T.C. Rodgers conducted the services at the home, church and graveside. Uncle John as he was known by all who knew him was confined to his bed for two and half years and bore his suffering with patience, fortitude, and always had a kind word and smile for all who visited him and was especially liked by the children of the neighbourhood.

TUCKER, Frederick
THE COMPASS, 22 May 1969

PORT DE GRAVE - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital, St. John's, May 9, Frederick Tucker (of Charles) of Port de Grave in his 86th year. He spent the past three months in hospital. His funeral took place at St. Luke's Anglican Church to the cemetery on Bareneed Hills. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J.W. Taylor. Leaving to mourn his aged wife Emily, one daughter Lillian, Mrs. Fred Bowering of Bay Roberts, one son Wilfred at home and one grand-daughter Phyllis, Mrs. Graham Snow of Clarke's Beach.
