HOLMES, Edward C.
THE COMPASS, 16 April 1970
SHEARSTOWN - Passed away at the Carbonear Hospital on March 26, after a relatively short illness, Edward Holmes of Shearstown in his 60th year. Although he had been suffering from terminal cancer for some months, death came suddenly and unexpectedly and was a great shock to his family and all his friends, not only in Shearstown but throughout the whole Conception Bay area. "Ned" as he was known to his family and friends, lived most of his life in this community and operated a general store here for many years. He was a good community leader and one who was involved in all spheres of activity in this Community for more than 40 years. If anyone could be labelled a "pillar of a community," Ned Holmes was certainly one here in Shearstown. He served for many years on the Anglican School Board and the greatness of his work toward educational improvement in this Community cannot be estimated. He was an Anglican who did much good as a member of St. Mark's Church. As Rev. Payne said at the funeral, St. Mark's has lost one of its best church workers and noble benefactors. In addition to church, school and social affairs in this Community Ned Holmes was for many years involved in politics in this area. He made a worthwhile contribution to the cause of Confederation in 1948 and '49 and earned the respect and admiration of some of Newfoundland's most outstanding political leaders. He played a part in virtually every election in Conception Bay since Confederation and in some cases did more to get certain candidates elected than they did themselves! As a person, Ned Holmes was a keen, intelligent and serious person, and a man with a high sense of values. He was a man who always wanted things done properly, for "half-way" affairs were not part of his nature. He was a shrewd businessman who worked hard during his life to build up his business. He was a man of great energy and enthusiasm and showed during his life, that he was a man of great initiative.
He was a member of Mackay Masonic Lodge, Bay Roberts, as well as a member of Cromwell No. 81 Loyal Orange Lodge, Shearstown. He was a member in good standing of both societies, and worked hard for the benefit of both. The Orangemen and the Masons attended his funeral as a body.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Blanche, two sons Clarence and Ralph at Shearstown, one daughter, Marie, Mrs. Albert Drover, Spaniard's Bay, eleven grandchildren, one brother John at Shearstown, four sisters, Elizabeth, Sadie, Susie and Julia all living in Massachuettes (sic), nephews and neices (sic), as well as a large number of close friends and acquaintances. The funeral service which was largely attended took place on March 28 from Baggs Funeral Home, Bay Roberts, to St. Mark's Church and Cemetery. The Burial Service was conducted by the Rev. S.S. Payne assisted by the Rev. F. Rowsell. During the service the congregation sang the well-known hymns, "How bright these glorious spirits shine", "O Master, let me walk with Thee" and "Abide With Me". Interment was in the family plot. It was a cold foggy afternoon when the funeral possession (sic) made its way to the grave and Nature itself seemed in mourning.
