OATES, William
THE COMPASS, 08 May 1969

Now the labourers task is o'er,
Now the battle day is past,
Now upon the farther shore,
Lands the voyager at last
.
To the majority of us voyagers are seafaring men, but William (Bill) Oates, who passed away on Friday, April 18., at the age of eighty-four years, was truly a Voyager. For fifty years the late Mr. Oates traversed the rivers, lakes and woods, of his native home, on short and lengthy voyages. A surveyor for more than fifty years with the railway, first with the Reid Newfoundland Company and then with their successors, under such noted surveyors as the late Mr. John P. Powell, Mr. Charles Cahill, Mr. Edward Corcoran, Mr. Joseph Doyle and finally Mr. Hudge Earle and, while they, or those still living, will re-remember him as a good workman they will remember him best for his kindly disposition and friendly and upright character; he was a friend to them all and an enemy of none, as was evidence by the many co-workers who attended his funeral and the numerous floral tributes sent and bearing the words "In loving memory" He possessed many Christian virtues and especially that of generosity and his good deeds are doubtless recorded in Heaven for it is for such as he that Our Lord said "Inasmuch as you did it unto one of the least of these, you did it unto me."
Following retirement he devoted himself to his family and home and the loving care bestowed upon him by his wife and children was equalled only by his loving devotion.
Left to mourn are his wife Sarah, three sons, William at Clarenville, Gordon and Rollis of St. John's, two daughters, Marjorie, (Mrs. Charles Swain) at Happy Valley and Blanche (Mrs. Andrew Oates) of this town; also one brother Ausustus, two sisters, Mrs. Leander Chubbs and Mrs. James Clarke, of this town, and eleven grandchildren and a wide circle of friends. At the age of 16, she began her teaching career at Burnt Island, Bonavista Bay, and following several years there, she was transferred to Dock Cove School on St. Brendan's. Many of her students still attest to her capabilities as a teacher and adviser. She married William F. Hynes, a business man of St. Brendan's, who died in 1931. Her two children by this marriage were Elizabeth, Mrs. E.P. Ennis, of Halifax, who died in 1959, and Michael, Rev. Fr. M.R. Hynes, P.P., Plate Cove, B.B. In 1934 she married Edward J. Family prayer and attendance at daily mass and communion were uppermost in her life, and her religious fervour was the admiration of all who knew her. She was a faithful member of St. Anne's Sodality on Bell Island 'til the time of her death. Her charity knew no bounds. Priest and parson, rich and poor, all shared her home and table. Her faith and trust in God were evidenced when, on being told that her illness was incurable, she remarked: "Do not cry over me. I have lived a long an d happy life; I have all my family around me; I am ready to go". She received the last rites of her church with evident fervour and resignation and she died peacefully in the presence of her son, Father Hynes, her husband, and Rev.
