THE COMPASS, 05 June 1969
BAY DE VERDE - Frank Coish was born at Bay de Verde and was the son of the late Thomas and Florence Coish but went to the United States some 22 years ago where he found employment at New Bedford. Being the son of a fisherman, he continued his inherited occupation and was employed on board the U.S. fishing vessel "Mino" which operated from the Hathaway-Braley wharf at New Bedford.
Prior to his disappearance, Coish left home as usual to join his ship but because of bad weather his skipper delayed sailing and advised his crew to return home until the weather improved. The next day the skipper telephoned Coish's home to advise him that he was about to sail, but his wife Anna, was surprised to learn that her husband had not gone out to sea.
It was at this point that Coish's disappearance was discovered and police were notified.
However, police took no action since it was thought that the man might have sailed on board another vessel. A check was made but it was learned that Coish was not on board any of the other vessels.
Captain Albert Hillier, instructor of the Vocational High School Fishermen's Training Program, called for Bedford fishermen to aid in a harbour wide search.
A Fairhaven scuba-diving Club known as the "Whalers" searched the harbour but found no trace of the missing man.
The missing fisherman was last seen when he went to his ship and volunteered to douse the lights and snug the vessel down for the night. Some 27 days later Coish's body was found floating in the harbour of New Bedford by Robert Phaneuf of another vessel. Medical Examiner Dr. Stanley Koczera attributed death to accidental drowning.
A fund for his widow, Mrs. Anna (McLeavy, formerly of Scotland) Coish, began and a rope braided lamp in the shape of an anchor, made by Captain Albert Hillier, was offered at a banquet of the United Fishermen's Wives organization and the amount of $155.00 was given Mrs. Coish.
The deceased was 52 and in addition to his widow, is survived by three sons Thomas, John, and Jan, a daughter Lori Ann, all of New Bedford and two brothers Mark and Clarence and two sisters Mrs. Rossitor Blundon and Mrs. Albert Blundon of Bay de Verde.
