BABB, Thomas
THE COMPASS, 07 August 1969

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at his son's residence, Harbour Grace, on July 17, Thomas Babb, age 90 years, formerly of Bryant's Cove. The late Mr. Babb was a devoted father and husband, and commanded a high degree of respect from all who knew him. During his lifetime, he worked at such places as Montreal and New York, but the greater part of his life was spent working in the iron ore mines of Bell Island. Twelve years ago he and his wife (the former Susie Yetman of Bryant's Cove) moved to St. John's to live with their son, Warren and his family on Curtis Place. At the time of his death, accompanied by Mrs. Babb, he was visiting his sons, Heber at Harbour Grace and Mark at Bryant's Cove. He leaves to mourn, his wife Susie, three daughters; Mrs. Gladys Lindsay and Mrs. Myrtle Muggridge of Brooklyn, New York and Jane, Mrs. John Dowding of Long Island, New York; also five sons; Heber at Harbour Grace, Mark at Bryant's Cove, Warren and Kenneth at St. John's and Nathan of Brooklyn, New York. Also nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral took place from the residence of his son, Heber, to St. Andrew's Church, Bryant's Cove, on July 19. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery, Bryant's Cove. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon R.R. Babb, nephew of the late Mr. Babb.

BRYANT'S COVE - Passed peacefully away at Harbour Grace in his 91st year a well known and respected resident of Bryant's Cove in the person of Thomas Babb. Left to mourn their sad loss is his wife Susie, three daughters, Gladys, Myrtle, and Jane. Five sons Mark, Kenneth, Heber, Nathan and Warren, A number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and a wide circle of relatives and friends.

BARRETT, Minnie

BISHOP'S COVE - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital, St. John's, on Tuesday, July15, Mrs. Minnie Barrett in her 66th year. Just one week ago she was conveyed to hospital, and although she had been in failing health for some time, the news of her death came as a shock to her family and friends. Mrs. Barrett was a devoted member of the Anglican Church, which she loved so well, and a life long member of the C.E.W.A. having received her 40 years service certificate a few years ago.
A highly respected person in this community, she possessed such a pleasing personality that everyone loved her, especially the children. She was always ready and willing to offer a helping hand to all. Before her marriage Mrs. Barrett taught school at Bishops Cove for two years.
She leaves to mourn her sad loss, her husband, William E. Barrett, one daughter, Frances, Mrs. Rhodie Smith, Spaniard's Bay, presently residing at Emily Harbour, Labrador; one son, John R. Barrett, Bishops Cove, two grand-daughters Annie Barrett and Doris Smith, three grandsons Robert and Andrew Barrett and Roland Smith, one great-grand-daughter, Andrea Barrett, one sister Nellie, Mrs. Bert Bill, Pinchards Island, B.B.
The funeral which was largely attended, took place from Young's Funeral home to the Anglican church and cemetery at Bishops Cove. The service of Requiem was conducted by Rev. J.W. Taylor, Port de Grave, assisted by Canon Martin, South River, who also conducted the service at the graveside. Sincere sympathy is extended.

BARRETT, Minnie
THE COMPASS, 24 July 1969

WINTERTON - Sympathy is extended to the Barrett family of Bishops Cove on the death of Mrs. Minnie Barrett, who passed away at the General Hospital on July 15. Her funeral took place from Young's funeral home, Spaniard's Bay to St. John's Church at Bishops Cove, on July 17 at 11 a.m.

BOONE, Christopher

CLARKE'S BEACH - Passed peacefully away at the General Hospital on July 23 after a short illness, Christopher Boone of South River in his 72nd year. He leaves to mourn wife Laura, four sons, Stewart at Corner Brook; Alexander at Toronto, Christopher at Harbour Grace and Cyril at Kelligrews. Also eleven grandchildren. Funeral was from his late residence July 25 to All Saints Church. Service was conducted by Rev. Canon Martin. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, South River. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved families.

BOONE, Elizabeth

PORT DE GRAVE - Passed away at Scarborough, Ontario July 24 Elizabeth, widow of the late Stephen Boone of Bareneed in her 87 year. She leaves to mourn one son Roy of Ontario; one daughter Emmie, Mrs. C. F. Hatcher; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Pack of St. John's and Mrs. Emmie Gosse of Spaniard's Bay. One brother Isaac Boone of Bareneed. The funeral took place from St. Mark's Church, Bareneed, 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27 with Rev. S. Payne of Bay Roberts officiating.

BURSEY, Joshua
THE COMPASS, 17 July 1969

OLD PERLICAN - One of Old Perlican's well known and respected citizens passed suddenly away on July 9 in the person of Joshua Bursey in his 63rd year. He is mourned by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bursey, Old Pelican; one brother Levi at Downsview, Ontario; three nephews and five nieces. Joshie as he was familiarly known, was well loved and respected by all who knew him. He was especially kind to children and many a child wept because their beloved friend was gone. Mr. Bursey worked at the fish plant here and the floral tributes received from his co-workers showed their respect for him. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery. Service was conducted by Rev. Hickman.

COOMBS, Allan
THE COMPASS, 17 July 1969

OLD PERLICAN - Residents of Old Perlican were shocked and saddened on Sunday, July 6 on hearing of the death in St. John's of Allan Coombs of this community. Mr. Coombs, with his brother ran a large forge here for several years and many men and women of both Conception and Trinity Bay knew him personally because of his business. He travelled both shores extensively and had a way of making friends with everyone he met. Since the death of his brother a few years ago, he moved to St. John's to live with his sister. Mr. Coombs came home for a visit occasionally and liked to visit the homes of everyone around. Deepest sympathy to his bereaved sister and brother in St. John's.

WINTERTON - Passed away at the General Hospital on July 11 after a short illness John Coombs in his 67th year. He leaves to mourn his wife Mary, four sons and three daughters. A large number of relatives and friends. Deepest sympathy is extended.

CROCKER, Baxter
THE COMPASS, 31 July 1969

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed suddenly away July 9, Baxter Crocker in his 63rd year. Mr. Crocker was a fisherman all his life. He lived a very quiet life going about his every day work. He leaves to mourn his wife, Annie Maud; two daughters, Evelyn, Mrs. Mervin Chislett at Toronto; and Mildred at home; also two step-sisters Jane, Mrs. Leonard Smith at Foxtrap and Martha on the mainland. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Brown assisted by Rev. Adams. Interment was at the Anglican cemetery July 10.

DALY, Alice
THE COMPASS, 07 August 1969

BRIGUS - The community of Brigus was deeply saddened to hear of the passing, under such tragic circumstances of Mrs. Joseph Daly, 36, on Saturday, July 26, at Goose Bay, Labrador. Mrs. Daly was the former Alice Killy, daughter of the late Don Killy and Mrs. James Reid of this town. Mrs. Dally suffered a heart attack while endeavouring to save one of the children from drowning. Apparently, the strenous effort was too much for her and she collapsed. She was immediately conveyed to hospital where everything possible was done to revive her, but to no avail. She leaves to mourn her husband, Joseph Daly, and five children, her mother, Mrs. James Reid; three brothers, Ned Kelly, Buchans; Bill at St. John's and Frank at Gander; four sisters, Nellie, Mrs. John Mackey, Wabush; Mary Agnes, Mrs. Winston Oates, Gander; Joan, Mrs. Ed Hayes, Brigus; and Madeline, Mrs. Ern Curnew, Brigus; two aunts, Miss Annie Kelly, Mackinsons, and Mrs. Aloysius Conners, St. John's. Her remains was brought from Goose Bay to her home church for burial. Funeral took place on Monday at the R.C. Church with Rev. Fr. Matthews officiating. Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family and especially to her mother who has borne so many tragedies in the past few years. Her son, two years old was accidentally drowned in a river near their home, her brother died from burns received in a fire in St. John's. Five years ago another son Mike, was killed in a mining accident at Buchans, and this latest death.

DEERING, William
THE COMPASS, 04 September 1969

SHEARSTOWN - William Deering, one of Shearstown's best known and respected citizens passed away on July 3 after a long illness. He was in his 68th year. Will as he was known to his friends was born in this community. In his earlier years he had worked away from home, but most of his life, was spent in Shearstown, where he worked in this community and the surrounding area. He was a devoted member of the Anglican Church, and a life-long member of the Loyal Orange Lodge. For 32 years he served as sexton of St. Mark's Anglican Church, Shearstown, and only during the last few years of his life when illness struck was he unable to adequately perform his duties. Even then the work of sexton was admirably carried on by his wife.
William Deering was a quiet man who lived according to the Christina ethic. He believed in living nobly and in doing a decent day's work. He was employed for many years by the firm of Dawe's Nail and Hardware, Bay Roberts. He leaves to mourn his wife, Jane, two daughters, Minnie, Mrs. David Clarke, Happy Valley, Doris, Mrs. Donald Earle, Shearstown, one son Chester, Happy Valley, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at St. Mark's Church and Cemetery conducted by the rector, Rev. S.S. Payne. Interment was in the family plot. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

DOWNEY, Alexander

OBITUARY - Another of Winterton's older residents, Alexander Downey age 81 passed away July 11, after an illness of one month. Uncle Sandy, as he was familiarly known to the many who were always welcome at his home, was a great sufferer for that short time and the end was not unexpected. He was a fisherman out of Winterton and on Baccalieu all his life. He married Mable Reid of Winterton who predeceased him 36 years ago, leaving him with five small children. He was both father and mother to them all, one daughter Ellie died at the age of 21 and Miriam (Mrs. Tom Walker) age 34.
He resided with his only son Ambrose and daughter-in-law, Louie and grandson Raymond Walker, who was taken as one of the family when his mother died.
Over 50 years, a member of the L.O.A. also a Sir Knight of Royal Black Preceptory, he was attended by the members during his illness, and paid their last respects at his funeral by attending in a body and acting as pallbearers. He leaves to mourn his son Ambrose, two daughters at Winterton; Elizabeth (Mrs. John Pinhorn); Gwendylon, Mrs. Nathan Harnum; two brothers Nathan Downey, Winterton; Rufus at Springdale; one sister, Mrs. Allan Andrews, Winterton. Six grandchildren at Montreal, 10 at Winterton, 13 great-grandchildren and a large circle of friends. The numerous floral tributes testified to the esteem in which he was held. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. Macabe. Interment in the United Church cemetery.

DROVER, Ambrose

UPPER ISLAND COVE - Passed away suddenly at his late residence at Upper Island Cove on July 15, Ambrose Drover in his 72nd year. Leaving to mourn is his wife, Lenora, two daughters, Agnes, Mrs. Rudolph Mercer, and Margaret, Mrs. Harold Butler, both of Upper Island Cove; also 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild; two brothers, Eldred and William of Upper Island Cove. Mr. Drover was a veteran of World War 1 and a life long active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 22 of Upper Island Cove. Legion members attended the funeral as a body. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of the late Mr. Drover. The funeral service took place on July 17 at 4:30 p.m. from St. Peter's Church.

DROVER, George

UPPER ISLAND COVE - Passed away suddenly at his home on July 15, George Drover in his 64th year. Leaving to mourn is his wife, Jessie, also one son Derek, three brothers, Maxwell, Thomas and Edwin at home and three sisters, Sybil, Mrs. Roy Mercer, Bay Roberts; Susie, Mrs. Walter Smith, Bishops Cove; and Minie, Mrs. Ronald Osbourne, Upper Island Cove. Also a large number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Drover was an active member of the Anglican Church Assistance Association and recently received a 25 year certificate from that organization. He was also an active member of the Loyal Orange Lodge and the C. L. B. He was also teaching for a large number of years at various places throughout the province. The funeral took place from St. Peter's Church on July 17 with representatives from the various organizations present. The services in the church and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. J. W. Taylor. Deepest sympathy is extended to the Drover family.

FRENCH, William Woodley

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at his late residence Harbour Grace, on July 19, William Woodley French, aged 84 years. The late Mr. French was well known in this town as a former employee of Munn and Co. at Harbour Grace, after which he spent 22 years as a government employee where he was engaged as the penitentiary warden also at Harbour Grace. Left to mourn are his wife, the former Ann Forward, of Carbonear, one son, Dr. George French, St. John's and five daughters: Ruby, Mrs. Edward Whalen and Patsy, Mrs. Leo Goloway at Harbour Grace; Rose, Mrs. Rupert Lester and Alice, Mrs. Peter Dawe, St. John's; and Mary, Mrs. William Skinner at Liverpool, England also 16 grandchildren. The funeral took place from his late residence to the United Church. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery, Harbour Grace. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. C. Hobbs.

HOBBS, Hazel Frances

NEW PERLICAN - William Hobbs of New Perlican received the sad news July 10 when his daughter Hazel Frances, 19, was killed in a car accident two miles east of Whitbourne. Hazel was a nurse's aid at the Grace Hospital. She leaves to mourn besides her father, four brothers, Raymond in the Royal Canadian Navy; Tom, Ken and Eric at home; also three sisters, Mary, Daphne and Lavenia; also a large number of friends. Funeral took place from St. Augustine's Church on July 11 with Rev. A. Torraville conducting. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery. The citizens of New Perlican extend deepest sympathy to the family.

KAVANAGH, Morris
THE COMPASS, 24 July 1969

CARBONEAR - Passed away at his home after a long illness Morris Kavanagh of Carbonear, at the age of 80 years.
Morris Kavanagh was a war veteran of two wars 1914-1918 and again during the second world war. Mr. Kavanagh enlisted again 1940 to serve overseas, and he served in the Canadian Army, the expeditionary force, and the Royal Canadian Engineers, the Forestry Division and other units. He was laid to rest in the R.C. Cemetery. Six of his comrades walked before him as pall bearers, and a large procession followed the motor hearse. Rev Fr. Brophy recited the prayers for the dead and officiated at the grave side.
Left to mourn are his wife, the former Annie McCarthy of this town, three sons, Brendan at home, William and Felix away. One brother, Frank at Carbonear, five daughters, Mary, (Mrs. Leo Butt), Carbonear; Rose (Mrs. Brendan Haire) of Harbour Grace; Alice (Mrs. Jerry Haire), Harbour Grace; Catherine (Mrs. Jerry Evans) of St. John's; Bride (Mrs. Roy Boone), of Bay Roberts. One sister Mrs. R. McCarthy, of Sydney, N.S. Two other daughters are Joan, Mrs. Wesley Pretty, St. John's; Bernadette, Mrs. Patrick Manning, Halifax, N.S.; also 20 grandchildren.

KEOUGH, Leonard

CARBONEAR - The town of Carbonear was saddened by the passing of Leonard Keough, a former employee of C.N.T. for over fifty years. Interment was at R.C. Cemetery with Monsignor Peddle and Rev. Fr. Brophy officiating.

LILLY, Elizabeth

HEART'S DELIGHT - Passed away after a short illness, Mrs. Elizabeth Lilly, age 89 years, at the home of her son Harry. Funeral services were at the Anglican Church and cemetery. Rev. W.T. Brown conducted the service. She leaves to mourn three sons, two daughters and a large number of grandchildren. Mrs. Lilly was a former resident of Exploits.

MARSHALL, Mrs Robert

CLARKE'S BEACH - The funeral of the late Mrs. Robert Marshall took place from Walter Baggs Funeral Parlour, Bay Roberts to the United Church, Clarke's Beach on Wednesday, July 23. Mrs. Marshall passed away at Brantford, Ontario. Her husband and sister Laura, accompanied the remains home. She leaves to mourn her husband, three sisters Laura, residing at Brantford, Ontario. Joan (Mrs. Clayton Snow) South River, and Shirley (Mrs. George Curnew) Clarke's Beach; one brother William Ivany, Clarke's Beach; one daughter Cathy and one son Brian. Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Wells of Brigus. Interment was at the U.C. Cemetery, Clarke's Beach.

MERCER, Mary

PORT DE GRAVE - Deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. William Tucker and Mrs. Bronson Lear of Port de Grave on the death of their mother, Mrs. Mary Mercer of Bay Roberts. She passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's, July 15.

CARBONEAR - Passed away at her home at Freshwater Carbonear Mrs. Sarah Noel at the age of 75 years, Aunt Sarah, as she was affectionately called, leaves to mourn her husband Gilbert Noel of that town. Interment at U.C. Cemetery, Rev. Mills officiating.

BRIGUS - Deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Mary (Morrissey) Prideaux, St. John's, on the death of her husband, John Prideaux which occurred on Saturday, July 19. Sympathy is extended from her relatives and friends at Brigus.

ROBERTS, Selby
THE COMPASS, 17 July 1969

BRIGUS - Passed peacefully away at the home of his son on July 7, Selby Roberts, in his 85th year. Mr. Roberts was one of the few remaining Labrador fishermen of this town. Strong, sturdy, hardworking, giving the best of his years, knowledge and experience to the calling he had chosen for his life's work, an energetic and successful "Toiler of the sea" often not receiving full rewards for all his labors, but still going on year after year, until forced by advancing years to pass over his fishing interests to his son James. Today he is one of the most successful fishermen at Indian Harbour, Labrador.
Mr. Roberts leaves to mourn his wife, Edith, two sons, John, Stoney Lake, Ontario; James at Brigus with whom he resided (presently at Indian Harbour, Labrador;) two daughters, Marion, Mrs. A. Parsons, Grimsby, Ontario; Annie, Mrs. B. Stephens, Welland, Ontario; and one brother, Donald R. Roberts, Victoria Harbour, Ontario, and a number of grandchildren.
Funeral took place at the United Church, July 9. Rev. R. Wells officiating, speaking from the subject, "As a leaf they shall fade."
Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family and Safe landed on that blessful shore, No roaring bellows left their head, No stormy tempests, now they dread, No roaring bellows left their head, O Happy souls! forever blest In that Home Port, how sweet your rest.

SHEPPARD, Mary

SPANIARD'S BAY - One of the oldest citizens of this community, Mrs. Mary Sheppard passed away at the home for the aged at Shearstown on Tuesday, July 22 at the age of 90.
She was known to everyone as Aunt Mary and there was hardly a home in Spaniard's Bay where she had not visited being a midwife here for many years. She was always cheerful and it was a pleasure to talk with her.
She resided here for many years with Mr. And Mrs. Levi Sheppard. A few months ago she had the misfortune to fall and break her ankle and soon afterward was moved to the home in Shearstown.
She rested at Young's Funeral Home until Thursday, July 24 when the funeral took place at Holy Redeemer Church, conducted by the Rev. Canon Martin of South River.
Members of the A.C.W.A. and the L.O.B.A. attended in a body. She had been an active and interested member of both organizations for many years.
She is survived by two brothers. Levi and Edward Reid at Dildo, Trinity Bay.

THOMAS, Jacob

HANT'S HARBOUR - Passed away recently at the Old Perlican Cottage Hospital, Jacob Thomas in his 86th year. Mr. Thomas had been ill for some time. He leaves to mourn, two daughters, Edith, Mrs. Harold Ash; Myrtle, Mrs. Victor Ash; three sons, Wesley at Brownsdale, Wilson, and Kenneth with whom he resided; thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in the Pentecostal Church, with Pastor Paul Hoyles officiating. Interment was in the Pentecostal Cemetery.

WALSH, Patrick

COLLIERS - Passed away at the General Hospital July 24, Patrick Walsh of Colliers in his 57th year. He leaves to mourn besides his wife Catherine, four daughters Kay, Mrs. James Dwyer, Kelligrews; Margaret, Mrs. Patrick Dobbin, Wabush; Maureen, Mrs. Gerald Brophy, Leamington, Ontario, Geraldine at home. Three sons Patrick, Wilbert and Carl at home; also three sisters, Mrs. Bride Conway, Colliers, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, Halifax, Mrs. Genevieve Morrissey, St. John's. Three brothers Henry, Colliers, Walter, Georgetown and John of St. John's. His funeral, which was largely attended took place from his late residence to the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Funeral service was conduct4ed by Rev. Fr. F.J. Terry. Interment was in the Roman Catholic Cemetery. Prayers at the graveside was recited by his nephew, Rev. Fr. David Morrissey.

WHALEN, Edith

BRIGUS - Passed peacefully away Friday, July 18, Mrs. Edith Whalen in her 82nd year. She leaves to mourn her husband Walter, one son William, and one daughter, Ruth, Mrs. Lloyd Bishop, and a number of grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Saunders. Funeral took place at the United Church, Sunday, July 20, Rev. R. Wells officiating. "Beside the green pastures I rest me today. My Father's green pastures, How blessed are they!

WINSOR, Isable

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away on July 4 at the age of 78 years Mrs. Abraham Winsor of Harbour Grace. Mrs. Winsor was the former Isable Kelloway, a resident of Wesleyville where she lived until 28 years ago when, with her husband and family they moved to Harbour Grace to reside.
Mrs. Winsor was a devoted member of the United Church and was a life time member of the United Church Women's Association.
She leaves to mourn five daughters; Lero - Mrs. John Martin and Sadie, Mrs. Carmen Mullett at Harbour Grace; Rowena, Mrs. Frank Stockley; Pearl, Mrs. Clyde Andrews and Hazel, Mrs. Fred Garland, all of St. John's; also four sons; James at St. John's, Norman and Maxwell at Harbour Grace and Hedley at Montreal; two sisters, Mrs. Georgina Best and Mrs. Rebecca Youden both at St. John's also one brother Samuel Kelloway at Wesleyville; 37 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her six months ago.
The funeral took place from her late residence to the United Church. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery, Harbour Grace. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. C. Hobbs and Rev. Naboth Winsor.
