GREEN, Allison
THE COMPASS, 05 February 1970

WINTERTON - The whole town of Winterton was shocked and saddened on January 27 when it was learned that one of its most respected citizens had passed away suddenly at his home. Allison Green was only 68 and he lived a very active life. At an early age he started fishing with cod-trap with his father Nicholas Green. He was only seventeen when he enlisted in the Royal Navy, World War One and saw active duty on the sea. At the end of the War he was employed with his uncle E. J. Green and Co. for several years and later went to New York, U.S. where he was employed in the shipyards at Brooklyn, New York until he was unable to work due to a fall sustained while on the job which injured his head. After returning home he was still active, in the United Church. He will be greatly missed. When health permitted he led the services as layreader and visited all the sick and aged in the community. His friendly handshake, words of comfort and prayers, his encouragement and interest in all young people will long be remembered. Even when he walked with the help of a cane, he still visited the sick or made personal inquiries. His unknown acts of kindness and material aid will long be remembered by many recipients. Visitors were always welcomed warmly at his home and he showed a very real interest in the affairs of the community, and a special interest in the work of the United Church and Sunday School. His family was very dear to him and the occasional visits of his daughters and grandchildren from the U.S.A. made him very happy as did the telephone calls when he could talk to all his family. Allison Green remained young in heart, he looked young, he could converse with the young people and also the sick and aged. It can be truly said of him 'Age did not weary him nor the years condemn, at the going down of the sun and in the morning, he will be remembered.' He leaves to mourn his wife Myra, two daughters Vera (Mrs. Johnny Bursell, Chicage (sic), Ill.) and Anne (Mrs. Charles Grulier, New Jersey), his aged mother Martha, two sisters Anne and Elsie (Mrs. Gordon Hindy) Two brothers Raymond and Roland all in New York, U.S.A. (his brother Edgar passed away in October 1969) six grandchildren and a large circle of friends. The many floral tributes and expressions of sympathy showed the esteem in which he was held. The members of the Canadian Legion paid their last respects by attending in a body and dropping the Poppy for Remembrance on his casket. The ritual at the graveside was recited by the President James Reid. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. MaCabe. Interment was in the United Church cemetery.
