BATTEN, Olive A.
THE COMPASS, 05 March 1970

COLEY'S POINT - Passed peacefully away at the Pentecostal home, Clarke's Beach on February 3, Olive A. Batten aged 69 years. Mrs. Batten, in her hours of pain, displayed a spirit which one must always admire. Her many friends remember her for her faith and courage which inspired all who visited her. Her kindness and love reached into the minds and hearts of a wide circle of friends and relatives. Although she suffered greatly for many years, she bore it to spare those she loved. Gloom or forboding never entered into her conversation. Death seemed to hold no peril for her, it seemed quite apparent that she had a faith that prepared her to meet it with the self same discipline that she had shown in life. The closing remarks of Rev. C. Stanford at her funeral service were quite fitting for sure a life. Taken from Tennyson:
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross'd the bar
.

HOLMES, James
THE COMPASS, 19 February 1970

SHEARSTOWN - On February 3, death came to James Holmes of Shearstown. It was not unexpected for the late Mr. Holmes had been ill for a number of years. During his lengthy illness he had been confined to his bed for long periods of time. He was 63 years of age.
In a way, the passing of James Holmes marked the end of an era in this community for in the past he was an outstanding community leader, the man who was looked up to as one of the pillars of our community, a business leader, a leader in educational matters, a leader in politics, a leader in the Christina laity, and a man who did a multitude of 'good turns' for the people of this area.
He had been in business in this community for more than forty years, having opened his first grocery store on Oct. 1, 1925. For eighteen years he served as Chairman of the Anglican School Board for Shearstown and Butlerville; he was for many years Chairman of the Local Roads Board. During pre-Confederation days he was elected as Vice-President of the Confederate Association, and as an individual in that capacity made an invaluable contribution to the Confederation cause, not only in Shearstown but throughout Conception Bay. He was a Past-Master of the Loyal Orange Lodge No. 81 Shearstown. In addition he had been Post Master in this community for the past two decades.
As a person "Jim" as he was known to his friends was a quiet modest man, but one of burning energy and ethusiasm (sic) for getting things done. Though this death was unexpected, it came as a surprise to many; for the realization that James Holmes had passed into oblivion was not easy to accept.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Nora, one son Bruce, two daughters, Ruby, Mrs. Charles Poirier, Montreal; Lillian, Mrs. William Bradbury, Shearstown, three sisters and one brother and seven grandchildren as well as a large number of distant relatives, friends and acquaintances. The funeral took place from Baggs' Funeral Home, Bay Roberts on Thursday, February 5, 1970. Members of the Loyal Orange Lodge attended as a body.
