BUTTON, Marjorie

OLD PERLICAN - Residents of Old Perlican were saddened on February 27 on the death after a short illness of Marjorie, wife of Morley Button of this place. Mrs. Button was in her 42nd year and leaves to mourn besides her husband and two sons Gerald age 21, and Harvey age 13. Two daughters Audrey and Evelyn age 10 and 8. Her mother, Mrs. Seeneth Rose, two sisters Annie, Mrs. Chesley Squires, Old Perlican and Edith, Mrs. Roy Oldford of Corner Brook, three brothers, Samuel, Harold and William all of Salmon Cove. The many floral tributes received and the many friends who attended her funeral showed how well Mrs. Button was liked by all who knew her. The Funeral Service was read by Rev. T. C. Rodgers. Interment was at U.C. cemetery, Old Perlican.

HEART'S CONTENT - Passed away at Carbonear Hospital on Feb. 18th, 1969 Mrs. Bennett George in her sixty-seventh year. She leaves to mourn her husband Joseph, five sons, Ellis, England, George, Kitchener, Ontario, Eleazer, Marystown, Arthur, Hawthorne, California, Ronald, St. John's, and three daughters, Maria (Mrs. John Prucnal), Ruthland, Mass., Myrtle (Mrs. Junior Hefford, Baie Verte, and Erma at home.
The funeral was held from St. Mary's Church on Feb. 20th with the Rev. A. Torraville officiating.

VICTORIA - Death has again visited this community and another family has lost a devoted, loving, kind husband and father.
Mr. Albert Burke, son of the late Samuel and Mary A. Burke, passed away in the early afternoon of Mondaf, Feb. 3. He was in his 62nd year and for many years was employed with the C.N.R. In recent years he served in the capacity of foremai with the carpentry and maintainance crews, which position he filled until late last fall when due to ill health he was forced to retire. He is sadly mourned by his wife (nee Martha Parsons), 6 sons Samuel, Arthur, Albert and Robert at home and Donald and Gordon in Grand Falls and Benton, also 4 daughters, Gertrude, (Mrs. Jack Holden, St. John's) Mae, (Mrs. Ben Baker, Carbonear) Lorna, (Mrs. M. Butt, Labrador City) and Linda, on the staff of the Grand Falls Hospital. A large number of grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. T. Mills on Thursday in the U. Church. He was a member of the L.O.A. Members of which paid their usual respects. Sincere sympathy is extended to the loved ones in their sad loss.

VICTORIA - Apologies are offered the two sisters of the late Mr. Albert Burke, whose names were inadvertently omitted from the list of relatives in his recent obituary. They are Mrs. Susanna Chislett of Cavendish, T.B. and Mrs. Manuel (Laura) Sutton of Victoria. They are the only remaining relatives of his original family and the overlook is deeply regretted. Sincere sympathy is belatedly offered.

VICTORIA - Monday, February 3, the town of Victoria was deeply shocked and saddened when the news was received of the death of Mr. Albert Burke, who passed away in his 62nd year. The funeral took place Feb. 7. Rev. Mills conducted the service at the home, also the L.O.L. of which he was a member for many years. The many floral tributes, telegrams, letters, and cards of sympathy testified to the esteem in which Mr. Burke was held.
He leaves to mourn his sad loss his wife Martha; four daughters, Gertie, Mrs. John Holden of St. John's, Mal, Mrs. Ben Baker of Carbonear; Lorna, Mrs. Muckel Berth of Labrador City; and Linda at home. Also six sons, Samuel, Albert, Arthur, Robert at home, Gordon at Benton, Donald at Bishops Falls; two sisters, Lora, Mrs. Manuel Sutton of Victoria, and Mrs. Susan Chislett of Cavendish; 29 grandchildren, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.
The funeral took place at the U.C. Church of Victoria. Rev. Mills conducted the service in church and at the graveside. Deepest sympathy is extended to all the bereaved.

VICTORIA - It is with deepest sympathy it has been learned of another passing in our community.
Mrs. Eliza Clarke passed away at her home at 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 14. She was in her 89th year and leaves to mourn, 1 son Walter J of Victoria and 1 daughter, Bessie, (Mrs. Albere Clarke) of St. John's also a large number of grandchildren and great, grandchildren. Funeral notice will be included at a later issue. Remains rested at the Pentecostal Church until burial. Relating to Mrs. Clark's demise, just approximately 4 hours before her passing a baby daughter was born to her grand-daughter Donna (Mrs. Cliff Harris) of Broad Cove, at Carbonear Hospital.

VICTORIA - The funeral of Mrs. Eliza Clarke took place at the Pentecostal Church on Sunday, Feb. 16. It was largely attended, the services being conducted by Pastor Daly assisted by Pastors Windsor, Longdon and Belbin. The choir very ardently rendered the beautiful hymn "Face to Face With Christ My Saviour." High tribute was paid the deceased lady in addresses given by Pastors Daly and Windsor. She was very well known and will be remembered as a woman of high integrity and gracious living. Not only did she give of the means at her disposal but she also gave of the labor of her hands to those who needed daily help. She was a deeply religious woman and much of her happiness was drawn from the hours spent in the House of God. Friends and acquaintances far and near will regret to learn of her passing.

HEART'S DESIRE - There passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on February 10th, Theresa, beloved wife of Michael Clarke in her seventy-second year. She leaves to mourn besides her husband one daughter, Eileen (Mrs. Patrick St. George), three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The remains were laid to rest in the family plot following Mass at the Sacred Heart Church. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at Harbour Grace on February 10, Mrs. Lillian Crocker age 79 years, wife of the late Charles Crocker.
Mrs. Crocker, the former Lillian Andrews, a life time resident of Harbour Grace was well known in this town.
She leaves to mourn one son Henley, and 2 grandchildren Charles and Kenneth, residing in St. John's, as well as a large circle of friends.
The funeral took place from Parson's Funeral Home, Harbour Grace to St. Paul's Anglican Church. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery. The burial service was conducted by Rev. L. A. Ludlow.

BAY DE VERDE - Bay de Verde recorded two deaths in 1969. First to pass away at his home was Arthur Emberley in his eightieth year. The late Mr. Emberley was in good health up until one week before his death. He was stricken suddenly with a stroke and lived only one week. The deceased was a life long fishermen but had retired for several years after his eyesight had failed him. He leaves to mourn five daughters and one son. Internment was at the Anglican Cemetery with Rev. K. L. Goldsworthy officiating.
Second to Eternal Rest was John Noah Blundon of Bay de Verde. The late Mr. Blundon was a fisherman but compelled to terminate his occupation some three years ago when he became ill. He spent most of that three years either at home or in hospital and recently passed away at the age of fifty-six years. Despite his age and long period of illness he failed to murmur and the numerous visitors to the Old Perlican Cottage Hospital, where he was a patient, remarked very frequently of his patience and humor. Left to mourn are two brothers and three sisters. Internment was at the Anglican Cemetery with the Rev. K. L. Goldsworthy officiating. Deepest sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

WINTERTON - Passed away suddenly at the home of his foster sister Serena (Mrs. Herbert Harnum), Joseph Follett age 66. Although he had been in failing health for some time. On Monday, February 3 he was up and around as usual when he was stricken with a heart attack and passed away before the doctor arrived His mother died when he was two years old and he was taken by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Follett who were the only parents he knew. The Follett family always regarded him as their own. He married Evelyn Gibbons of Lumsden who was ill all her married life and spent awhile in the Santorium St. John's. On her return home he cared for her and his aged father until they both died in 1961. Since then he worked in St. John's and spent the winter months with his sisters Lydia (Mrs. S Hownsell, St. John's) and Serena (Mrs. H. Harnum) here. He was a member of the L.O.L. and R.B.P. Lodges, Winterton. The members acted as pall bearers and paid their respects at the funeral The service was conducted by Rev. Macabe. Interment in the family plot, United Church Cemetery.

BELL ISLAND - Douglas Gollop of Portugal Cove, passed away at a St. John's city hospital last week. He was 37. Left to mourn are his wife Audrey and 3 children. The funeral took place at Portugal Cove. Mrs. Gollop is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Annanias Miller, Portugal Cove.

BELL ISLAND - The body of the late Cyril Jackman, the Front a former resident of this community who passed away suddenly at Galt, Ont., was brought back here for burial. Funeral arrangements on arrival were looked after by the Rideout Funeral Service, Wabana.

BELL ISLAND - The community was saddened when word was received last week that a former resident Cyril Jackman had passed away suddenly at Galt, Ont. He was 52. His brothers and sisters, all of whom reside in Ontario were here at the time, attending the funeral of their late father, Walter Jackman, who passed away a few days previously.
The late Cyril Jackman was a miner at Wabana and became displaced by the closing of the Wabana Mine. He re-located to Galt, Ont., where he was employed at the time of his death. The body was brought back here for burial. Funeral arrangements here were handled by the Pendergast Undertaking Service.
Following burial service in St. Michael's Church he was lai to rest in the R. C. Cemetery, Beach Hill.

BELL ISLAND - Two more senior residents of this community passed away at the Dr. Templeman Memorial hospital recently.
William Kananagh, East End, passed away in his ninety-second year. The funeral procession attended Burial Mass in St. Michael's Church. Interment was in the R. C. Cemetery, Beach Hill.
Joseph Sapp, passed away in his ninetieth year. The late Joseph Sapp was a native of Lebanon. He came to Wabana over 50 years ago and entered the business field in which he was successful. He is a Fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Knights of Conception Council formed a guard of honour at his funeral.
The funeral procession attended burial mass in St. Michael's Church. He was laid to rest in the R. C. Cemetery, Beach Hill. Both funerals were looked after by the Pendergast Undertaker Service.

BROAD COVE - Passed away on Feb. 22, 1969, Mrs. Silas King in her 84 year. She leaves to mourn her husband, one son, three daughters, one sister and a number of grandchildren. Her son Bill and daughter Leanie, both of the U.S.A., attended the funeral which took place in the United Church, Broad Cove on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. The service was conducted by Rev. Samuel F. Bown. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

BRIGUS - Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital after a short illness on Feb 6th Margaret, beloved wife of James Lambe, age 74 years. Leaving to mourn, her husband, five sons, Patrick at Freshwater, Placentia Frank at Brigus, James at St. John's, John at Argentia Jerome at New Jersey, three daughters, Angela (Mrs. James Burke) Brigus, Mary (Mrs. Robert O'Toole), Conception Harbour and Loretta (Mrs. Allan Bo(?)schweiler Downey California. One sister, Mrs. Bride Hannon, Norwalk, Conne(?)icut, also a large number of grandchildren Funeral took place on Saturday Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Matthews conducting the funeral service. The Scripture was read by Terry Burke, grandson of the deceased. The large numbers of friends and elatives attending the service testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Sincere sympathy is extended to all.

HEART'S DELIGHT - Passed peacefully away at Markland Cottage Hospital early Friday morning Feb. 14, Arthur Legge in his seventy ninth year. Mr. Legge has been in failing health for some time. He leaves to mourn four daughters Clara, Mrs. Herb Pasha, Harbour Grace, Hilda, Mrs. Brenton Wombath, Halifax, Jane, Ms. Leonard Branton, Halifax, Mae, Mrs. Irving Wentzell, Halifax, three sons Joseph at Corner Brook, Arthur at Halifax and George at Heart's Delight with whom he resided, two brothers, John and Edward, residing at Halifax. Two sisters Leah, Mrs. Freak at Toronto and Annie at Heart's Delight. Funeral services were held Feb. 16 to St. Matthew's Church. Services were conducted by Rev. W. T. Brown.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed away on February 20, at the Grace General Hospital, St. John's, after a brief illness, Mls. Wesley Loder, aged 49 years.
Mrs Loder was the former Marjorie Hoff of Change Islands. Mrs. Loder and her husband moved to Harbour Grace South to reside some 24 years ago, where they operated a business until some 11 months ago, when they left Harbour Grace to take up resident at St. John's.
Mrs. Loder was well known and equally respected by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn their sad loss, her husband, two sons, Ross at North Bay and Terry at home, one sister, Nellie - Mrs. George Peckford, Lewisporte, as well as three brothers, Lester at Bishop's Falls, Morley at Lewisporte and William residing at Brampton, Ontario.
The funeral service took place from Barrett's Funeral Home on Saturday February 22. Intement was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

UPPER ISLAND COVE - Passed peacefully away at Carbonear Community hospital Feb. 8, John Mercer in his 66 year. He leaves to mourn his widow, Mathilda, one silter, Ethel (Mrs. Wm. Mercer) Upper Island Cove and a large number of nieces and nephews. His funeral which was largely attended took place at St. Peter's Church, Upper Island Cove, Feb. 10. The service was conducted by Rev. F. R. Rowsell. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery, Upper Island Cove.
MULLEY, John William

VICTORIA - The news was received recently that a former resident John Wm. Mulley had passed away at the age of 77 yrs., in Florence, C. Breton. He went to Nova Scotia many years ago and was a miner the greater part of his time. He is survived by 6 sons and 4 daughters and 2 sisters Mrs. John Slade and Mrs. Pheobe Rose of Victoria. His wife Miriam predeceased him some years ago. Burial took place in Florence, N.S.

BELL ISLAND - Two former residents of this community passed away recently. Mrs. Gerald Neary in her forty-fifth year, died in a St. John's city hospital. Interment was in St. John's.
Another resident, Mrs. Richard Kent, formerly of Lance Cove, died in Ontario, she was 88. The body of the late Mrs. Kent was brought back here for burial. She was laid to rest in the family plot at Lance Cove. Her son Dan and daughter Mollie accompanied the body. Funeral arrangements here were handled by undertaker Frank Pendergast.
PEDDLE, Cecil

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away his home at Bear's Cove on February 28, Mr. Cecil Peddle in his 89th. year. Mr. Peddle was a former resident of Bristol's Hope, but moved from that community to Harbour Grace to reside some 55 years ago. He was well known as a sports' hunter and was considered to be one of the finest marksmen in the area. He enjoyed a large circle of friends, many of whom he became acquainted with through his various employments. He prosecuted the fishery, worked at Archibald's Boot and Shoe Factory at Harbour Grace and also worked in the Sydney mines. He leaves to mourn; his wife; the former Mary Butt of Carbonear and 7 sons; Albert at Gander and William, Robert, Maxwell, Absalom, Clarence and James at Harbour Grace and two daughters - Mildred and Winnifred, both residing at New York also 40 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The funeral took place from Parsons' funeral home, to St. Paul's Church. Interment was at the Anglican cemetery. The burial service was conducted by Rev. L. A. Ludlow.
PERCY, Frank

BRIGUS - Passed peacefully away on Feb. 9th Frank Percy age 84 years. Mr. Percy had been in poor health for a number of years and had been living with his son Robert at whose house he passed away. He leaves to mourn one son Robert at Brigus two daughters, Jean, Mrs. Fred Percy, Grand Island Ontario, Alice, Mrs. Clayton Swain, Buffalo, New York two grandchildren Jean Percy, Sault Ste. Marie and Roger Percy, at Brigus. Mr. Percy was a life-long member of the L.O.A., Brigus and some years ago had been honoured by being presented with an Honorary Member Life Membership Certificate in recognition of long and faithful service to the Association. He had also been made an Honorary member of the Trustee Board of Brigus United Church. As a young man, Mr. Percy worked for a number of years in Buffalo, N.Y., following which he returned home and prosecuted a successful Labrador fishery for over 40 years. Truly he was a person who could be numbered among those who could be classed as "the salt of the earth." His funeral took place at the United Church Tuesday, Feb. 11th. Rev. R. Wells conducted the funeral service speaking from the test, "Death is swallowed up in victory." Deepest sympathy is extended to all.

PIERCEY, William J

NEW HARBOUR - There passed away unexpectedly in the early morning of February 11, William J. Piercey in his seventy-second year. He leaves to mourn two sons, Arthur and Jethro, at New Harbour and one brother, Joshua, at Howley. Funeral services were held at the Salvation Army Citadel by Capt. B. Goulding (who delivered the message) assisted by Mrs. Goulding and Brigadier C. Thompson of Green's Harbour.
Mr. Piercey was a veteran of both world wars, having served with the Nfld. Regiment in World War 1 and in the Trinity South Branch, Royal Canadian Legion, and for many years a member of Rhoden L.O.L. No. 14 New Harbour. Both the Legion and the Orange Society were represented at the funeral services, Legion President James G. Reid, reading the service on behalf of the Legion and James Benson, acting Chaplain L.O.L. No. 14 on behalf of the Orange Order, at the graveside. Interment was in the S.A. Cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives.

DILDO - Passed away at the Grace Hospital on Sunday, February 9th, Mrs. Albert Reid in her 45th year. Burial service was conducted by Capt. B. Goulding on February 11, at 2 p.m. Interment in the S.A. Cemetery, Dildo. Deepest sympathy is extended to the family.
Mrs. Reid (Hazel) was the only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Edward Reid of Dildo. She was the Y.P.S. up to the time of her death and will be missed by many.

GREEN'S HARBOUR - There passed peacefully away at Green's Harbour February 10 John A Smith age 66 years. Born at Chance Cove, Trinity Bay, he came to reside at Green's Harbour twenty three years ago His wife the former Bertha Crocker predeceased him fourteen years ago. He leaves to mourn their sad loss fiver sons Abraham, Raymond, Llewellyn, Clarence and Gerald all at home, three daughters, Mrs. Gordon Howell at Green's Harbour, Mrs. Charles Williams at New Harbour and Melvina at home. Two brothers Obediah and Elijah Smith at Chance Cove, one sister, Mrs. Samuel Worthman at Green's Harbour and four grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted by Brigadier and Mrs. C. Thompson of the S.A. Corp, assisted by Rev J. Adams of of the United Church. Members of the Loyal Orange Association attended the funeral and paid their last respects to the departed brothers. Amongst were members of his Mother Lodge at Chance Cove. Also present was his sister-in-law from St. John's, Mrs. George (Doris) Coates. The family of the deceased wishes all the neighbours and friends who so kindly helped in any way during the illness and death of the dear father. How thenkful they are to those who sent cards, messages and wreaths A sincere thank you and a special word ot thanks to Dr. Brett, Brigadier and Mrs. Thompson, and Rev. F. Adams, all of whom made many visits during his illness

CLARKE'S BEACH - Passed peacefully away at his home Rond Ave., on February 17th after a long illness Mr. William Snow in his 85th year (incidentally this was his 85th birthday) He leaves to mourn his wife Selina and one daughter Oliver (Mrs. Malcolm Rees) residing at Bell Island, also a very large circle of relatives and friends.
The funeral took place from his home on February 19th to the Salvation Army Citadel, where the funeral service was held and conducted by Bridadier Abram Churchill. Interment was at the Salvation Army Cemetery. The deceased was a long standing member of Bartholomew L.O.L. No. 40, which society formed part of the funeral procession accompanied by the local band. To all members of the bereaved families deepest sympathy is extended.

GRATES COVE - Passed away early Saturday morning, Feb. 8 at St. John's Elezor Stansford at the age of 95. A long time resident of Grate's Cove, after the death of his wife approximately 20 years ago he moved to St. John's to live with his daughter Mary and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Stuckless. Mr. Stansford was in good health and active until the month of January 1969 when he was taken ill and was confined to his bed until the time of his death. The body was brought by hearse on Feb. 9 to Grates Cove Grace United Church where the funeral service was conducted by the minister Rev. T. C. Rogers. Interment at the United Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family.
STARES, R Max

BELL ISLAND - A well known and highly respected former resident of this community in the person of R. Max Stares passed away in his St. John's apartment on Thursday, February 14, following a short illness. He was in his sixty-third year.
The late Mr. Stares was born here. He is a direct descendant of the first settler that came here from England, the late Gregory Normore. Max was employed with the Dosco Mining Company in the Wabana operation, in the accounting department until the mine closed in 1966.
He was the local correspondent for the Daily News for several years. He also represented the Evening Telegram for a while. At the time of his death he was employed with the Daily News as a proofreader.
He leaves to mourn his wife Pearl and two daughters, Mrs. Thos. McCurdie Los Angeles and Mrs. Granville Gosse, St. John's. Also one brother Rivelyn here.
The funeral took place here, with burial service in St. Cyprians Church and at the graveside. Burial was in the Anglican Cemetery, Beach Hill.
WARREN, Walter

BELL ISLAND - The passing was recorded on Tuesday, February 25, of another senior citizen of this community in the person of Walter Warren. He was in his seventy-first year.
The later Walter Warren is a former Wabana miner.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, February 28. Funeral services were in St. Cyprian's Church and at the graveside interment was in the Anglican Cemetery, Beach Hill.

BELL ISLAND - Word has been received of the passing of another former citizen of the community. Mrs. Patrick Whalen died in Galt, Ont., on February 11. She was in her sixty-fifth year.
The body is being brought here for burial.
