Gerald Anderson Butt, 89, of Jeffersonville/Hyde Park, Vermont, died peacefully at his Stepdaughter's home on February 26, 2014 following a long struggle with Alzheimers. He was born December 4, 1924 in Newfoundland the son of John Archibald Butt and Alethia (Peddle). Gerry was one of 13 children.
Gerry moved to Vermont in 1942 to work on a farm in Jeffersonville owned by Milo and Nettie Porter. This farm most would know as the "1829 House". This is where he met and married the farmer's daughter, Marion Porter, on September 9, 1962. Gerry and Marion dairy farmed for a number of years before selling the farm and building their home on the hill on Route 15 in Jeffersonville. Here, they raised beef cattle, had wonderful vegetable gardens, and also grew blueberries and raspberries. After retiring from farming, he worked for DHIA Milk Testing.
Gerry was a longtime Mason of the former Warner Lodge #50 of Cambridge now Mt. Mansfield Lodge #26 F&AM of Jericho. Gerry was active in the Cemetery Association, AARP, VT Electric Co-op Board of Trustees, and the Lamoille Farm Bureau. Gerry enjoyed attending the local girl's high school basketball games.
After Marion passed on April 12, 1986 he married Stella Gates Lavanway on May 24, 1987 and continued to reside in Jeffersonville. Gerry and Stella loved to ice fish and travel. They made numerous trips to his childhood home in Newfoundland. After marrying Stella he "inherited" five step-daughters whom he continued to have a relationship with after the death of their mother Stella on May 30, 1990.
Gerry then married Crystal True on June 6, 1992 and continued to reside in Jeffersonville. They traveled to Maine frequently to Crystal's home. Crystal and Gerry loved to travel to Newfoundland and attended Fryeburg Fair on a regular basis. Gerry was very close to Crystal's siblings and her three children who continued to visit Gerry after their mother's death on April 7, 2007.
Following this time, Gerry remained at his home until he required some day-to-day help. He then moved to Hyde Park and was cared for by his stepdaughters and step granddaughters. Gerry had a wonderful sense of humor and was always singing a little "ditty".
