SHEA, William J
THE COMPASS, 08 January 1970
TRIBUTE - WILLIAM J SHEA

On December 3, death claimed Bill Shea and many people in every walk of life grieved, for where Bill went, there he found a friend. We first met Bill when we moved to Bell Island in 1963 and we watched and marvelled at the enthusiasm he always had for everything; his work at the Vocational School, his devotion to the boys at the Wabana Boys' Club and to his little brother Paddy. All children were drawn to Bill by some instinct and all were dear to him. Watching him one could scarcely believe him to be a serious diabetic. Two serious accidents (one nearly fatal) added much to his discomfort but he was never heard to complain for Bill loved live and he lived it to the fullest. Moving to Mount Pearl in 1966, he was rapidly establishing himself as a well liked and respected citizen.
He was returned to his beloved "Island" on December 5 and laid to rest in the Roman Catholic Cemetery there.
To Bernadette, our special thoughts and prayers.
(Don and Olive Sanger, Lewisporte)

BISHOP'S COVE - The community of Bishop's Cove was shocked Thursday to hear of the death of another one of its highly respected citizens in the person of Mrs. Dorothy M. Smith, in her 64th year. Although the deceased had a heart condition for a number of years she was still pretty active up till the time of her death. She suffered a severe heart attack in the early hours of Thursday morning and while en route to the General Hospital she died. To make the blow more severe her husband, Mr. Reginald Smith, was a patient at the General Hospital, at the time. She was a life long member of the C.E.W.A. and was presented with her 40 years of active service certificate in 1957. She was also a life member of Unity Lodge No. 1035 and was a faithful and devoted member of the Anglican Church. It was a labour of love for her to prepare the Chancel and Sanctuary of the church for regular and special services. This is one of many ways that she will be missed by the community. The many floral tributes helped show the esteem and respect in which she was held. She leaves to mourn her sad loss, her husband, Reginald, four daughters, Gladys, Mrs. Gordon Barrett, Spaniard's Bay, Mary, Mrs. Max Winsor, Harbour Grace, Nellie, Mrs. Maxwell Barrett, Dunville, and Betty, Mrs. Winston Coombs, Upper Island Cove.
