SOOLEY, Mr. Ivan Franklin - On Wednesday, August
18, 2010, at the Victoria
General Hospital in Halifax, NS, after a courageous battle with Leukemia, Ivan
was taken peacefully, surrounded by family. Ivan was cherished and loved by
his wife of 52 years, Phyllis (Hillyard), daughter Debbie (Rick Cashion) and
granddaughter Julia (Ottawa) and son Craig (Judith) and grandson Tristan (Halifax).
He is survived by siblings Morley (Beverly), Jim (Marie), Neta March and Eleanor
White as well as many favourite neices, nephews, aunts and uncles. Ivan was
born in Heart's Delight, Newfoundland, to Clara and George Sooley. He spent
his years growing up visiting favourite spots like Shag Rock and Muddy Pond.
Ivan only had to go a short ways down
the road to Heart's Content to find the love of his life, Phyllis. They married
and raised two children while living in various towns and cities in Newfoundland
and Labrador.
Ivan served five years in the Royal Canadian Navy before starting
what became a lengthy and successful career in radio broadcasting where Ivan
loved being the voice of whatever town he was in at the time. He and Phyllis
retired, first in Ottawa, ON then St. Philips, NL and most recently Halifax,
NS. Ivan was a proud Newfoundlander, always enjoying a good yarn, goin' troutin'
and eating a good Jig's Dinner. Ivan was a friend to all and always had a tale
to tell. His heart was strong and genuine, loving his family and life itself
for all its worth. His charm and wit impressed and delighted everyone around
him, and for those special people who happened to cross his path, he always
saved a wink and nod. Ivan will be remembered as a loving and loyal husband,
a compassionate father, a playful grandfather and a trusted brother and friend.
Besides spending time with his family, Ivan was a great hockey and baseball
fan, never missing a playoff game on TV. But his favourite pastime was fishing.
Many days and nights were spent with his brothers and friends and son, fishing
at Muddy Pond or any other place where he could throw a line in the water.
It was a
passion that never left him. "Trout that doesn't think two jumps and
several runs ahead of the average fisherman is mighty apt to get fried." Ivan was no average fisherman and we know he's already up there looking for
the next great catch!
A funeral service will be held at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Heart's
Delight, Newfoundland on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 2 pm with The Rev. Ed
Keeping officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the 8th Floor
of the Victoria General Hospital (Hematology Patient Amennities Fund, C/O the
QE II Foundation), Halifax, NS, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada
or a charity of your choice. For online condolences, please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
The family would like to thank Doctors Grewal and Issaji in St. John's and
Doctors Anderson, Robinson, Burns and Couban in Halifax, Janice for your guidance
and the nurses of the 8th Floor at the VG Hospital, especially Shauna, Lynn
and our Heather. Your care, kindness and support was above and beyond. Death
leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.
