RALPH, Nellie
THE COMPASS, 16 April 1970

PORT DE GRAVE - The whole community of Port de Grave was saddened on April 3 when word was received that Nellie Ralph had passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's. Nellie, as she was lovingly known to all, led a dedicated life. She was 64. After the close of the Lenten service on Maundy Thursday the choir was just preparing for practice of the Easter Anthems when she suffered a stroke. The doctor and ambulance were called and she was taken to hospital at St. John's. She never regained consciousness and passed away one week later. Nellie had spent all her lifetime at Port de Grave. Because of a bedridden mother and blind aunt she stayed home and taught school here, first at the old school known as "John Delaney's and later at St. Luke's. After the death of her mother, she married Levi Ralph of Port de Grave in 1943, taking her aunt with her and caring for her up to the time of her death. She was organist in the church here for 40 years, president of the A.C.W.A. and member of the Altar Guild. Along with her other duties she ran a store and cared for her husband who has a heart condition. She also cared for Rev. G. H. Maidment, retired Anglican clergyman, up to the time of his death in April 1969. In addition to this her home was always open to all visiting clergy and their families and one cannot but wonder how she provided such faithful service to all. She will be sadly missed and it is doubtful if her place here can ever really be filled. Her funeral, considered the largest ever held here, took place on Sunday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m.; from her home to St. Luke's Church which was filled to capacity. The choir paraded to the church entrance and preceeded (sic) the casket up the aisle. The hymns, The strife is o'er," "Ten thousand times ten thousand," and "Where the light forever shineth," were sung. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J.W. Taylor, assisted by Rev. E Willis of Spaniard's Bay. Prayers at the home were by Rev. S. Payne of Bay Roberts. Organist was Mrs. Marjorie (Tuck) Roach. The A.C.W.A. escorted the remains to their last resting place.
