ANGEAR, Earle

HARBOUR GRACE - It is with deep regret that the residents of Harbour Grace learned of the death of Earle Angear in his 47th year of Kitchener, Ontario on April 19. Mr. Angear was married to the former Margaret Pynn, eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Pynn of this town. He leaves to mourn his wife and two sons.
The funeral took place at Kitchener, Ontario. To the deepest sympathy is extended.
BICKFORD, Joseph

BELL ISLAND - The passing was recorded last week of a well known resident of Bickfordville, in the person of Joseph Bickford. He was in his seventy-third year. He leaves to mourn nine daughters and two sons. His wife pre-deceased him a few years ago. When taken ill, the late Mr. Bickford was entered in a St. John's city Hospital, where he died. The body was brought back here for burial.
The funeral took place from the home of his son in Bickfordville on Wednesday afternoon, April 2. Following service in St. Mary's Church, Lance Cove and at the graveside, he was laid to rest in the family plot in the old Anglican Cemetery at Lance Cove.
BUTLER, Mrs. Robert

CUPIDS - The funeral of the late Mrs. Robert Butler, age 66, who passed away at the General Hospital, April 6, took place Tuesday, April 8 at the United Church, Cupids. Rev. R. Wells officiated. She leaves to mourn, her husband, and a number of relatives. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved.
BUTTON, Minnie

NEW MELBOURNE - Mrs. Minnie Button, widow of the late Elisha Button, formerly of New Melbourne, died at St. Patrick's Mercy Home, St. John's, April 28. She was born at Little Bay Islands, the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Thistle.
In her early years she was a teacher and taught school, among other places, at Hant's Harbour and Brownsdale.
She married the late Elisha Button and liver here for a number of years until the family moved to St. John's.
Her husband predeceased her twenty years ago.
She is survived by one son Max, at Boston, U.S.A., where he is receiving medical treatment.
A daughter Marjorie died some years ago at Montreal, where she was teaching.
Funeral service was conducted by Rev. T. P. Moulton, at St. Stephen's United Church, New Melbourne.
CHIPMAN, Blanche

SPANIARD'S BAY - Mrs. Blanche Chipman passed away at her home here on Good Friday. She was fifty-nine. She leaves to mourn her husband Solomon, three daughters, Bertha at Home, Joyce, Mrs. Ralph Roach, Coley's Point, Jean teaching at Upper Island Cove, one son Edward at home, one brother Gordon Pearcey at St. John's and two grandchildren. Her remains rested at Young's Funeral Home until Easter Sunday when the funeral was held at 2.30 to Holy Redeemer Church. The A.W.A. of which she was a long time member attended in a body. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. E. Willis, assisted by the Rev. S. Payne of Bay Roberts. Burial was in the Mortuary Hill Cemetery.
COATES, Wilson

WINTERTON - Passed away at the Grace General Hospital April 23, a few weeks after an operation, William Coates, age 80.
His wife Amelia Jane died 37 years ago, leaving him with three small children, one an infant who was cared for by her aunt, Isabelle White. He cared for the others and has lived with his son, Clifford, ever since. Except for a few years past he resided with his daughter, Sarah, Mrs. Harold Andrews, St. John's, during the winter months.
He was an honorary member of the Society of United Fishermen No. 2, a member of the District Grand Lodge and a member of the Supreme Grand Lodge since 1948. A Past Master of the S.U.F. No. 2, Winterton, also band master since the death of band master Harold Kelland in 1946, until he retired a few years ago. He played the leading part in the band, E flat coronet, for 40 years and ably performed the duties of band master. The S.U.F. brass band very fittingly played at the funeral service in the hall en route to the church and at the cemetery.
He leaves to mourn one son, Clifford, Winterton, two daughters, Sarah (Mrs. A. Andrews) and Effie (Mrs. William Pitcher) St. John's, six grandchildren and one brother, Norman, Winterton.
The remains rested at Barrett's Funeral Home and was brought home by motor hearse to the S.U.F. Hall from where the funeral took place. Rev. A. Torraville conducted the services. The S.U.F. paid their last respects by attending in a body.
Interment in the Anglican cemetery.
DOVE, Ethel

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at Harbour Grace on April 17, Mrs. Ethel Dove in her 72nd year.

She leaves to mourn four sons; Errol, with whom she resided, Robert at Harbour Grace, Frank in Boston and Howard at Port Harrison; three daughters, Mildre - Mrs. Herbert Sheppard and Blanche - Mrs. Max Peddle, both of Harbour Grace, and Marion - Mrs. P. Yetman of Halifax; three sisters, Mrs. Elijah Coombs, Harbour Grace, Mrs. Alice Norman and Mrs. Irene Fizard of St. John's; one brother Allan at New York; and 16 grandchildren.
The funeral took place from her late residence to St. Paul's Anglican Church. Interment was at the Anglican Church. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery. Rev. L.A. Ludlow officiated at the burial service.

UPPER ISLAND COVE - The death occurred at Upper Island Cove on April 23 of Theresa Drover, beloved wife of Joseph Drover, in her seventy-third year. Left to mourn is her husband Joseph, one brother Kenneth at Upper Island Cove and one sister, Mrs. Violet Adams of Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., also Mr. And Mrs. Henry Crane and children Karen and Blanche who resided with her and a large number of friends.
FARRELL, John

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away on April 28 after a short illness, Mr. John Farrell age 69 years, of Harbour Grace.
The late Mr. Farrell was the son of the late Julia and James Farrell of Harbour Grace. He was married to the former Mary Haine of Harbour Grace.
He leaves to mourn, his wife also one son Patrick at home and two daughters: Isabelle - Mrs. Kenneth McKay and Carmelle - Mrs. Thomas McCarthy both of Halifax also one sister - Mrs. Daniel Maloney of Riverhead, Harbour Grace and three grandchildren Jerry, Sheila and Kenneth.
The funeral took place from Parsons Fumeral Home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Interment was at the R.C. Cemetery. The Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Walsh of Conception Harbour, assisted by Msgr. J. O'Brine.

WHITEWAY - There passed away at the General Hospital on Monday, April 7th Mrs. Mary Golden in her 63rd year. She leaves to mourn her husband George, three daughters Rita Mrs. Len Veley at St. John's, Minnie, Mrs. Garfield Follett at Dunville and Eleanor Mrs. Wm Wells at Gander. One son William at St. john's, mother, Mrs. Agnes Drover at Whiteway, four sisters Blanche at Montreal, Ethel, Mrs. Richard Curtis at St. John's, Ella at St. John's, Clara, Mrs. Wm. Simmons at Green's Harbour. Two brothers Eldred and Garland at home. Also a number of granl children. The burial service was conducted by Rev. John Adams. Burial was in the U.C. Cemetery at Whiteway.
KELLY, John

Bell Island - The passing has been recorded of a well and favourably known resident of the Front, in the person of John Kelly, retired pilot. He was in his ninety-first year.
The late John Kelly was born in this community and was born in this community and was part of Bell Island's history down through the years.
At the time he was born, there was no church here, he was taken by rowboat to Portugal Cove to be christened. He witnessed the opening of thhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeethe ore mine hzgz and worked in various departments with the mining company. He was port pilot here for the giant ore carriers which came from overseas to transport the Wabana ore product to the world markets. During the second world war, Mr. Kelly handled the piloting of all ore carriers arriving here.
He leaves to mourn, one son Michael, three daughters Kate (Mrs. Gerald Wade) in the U.S.A., Sarah, (Mrs. Gerald Reid) Bell Island and Mary at home. His wife predeceased him a few years ago.
The funeral took place from his home at the Front, following burial service in St. Michael's Church. He was laid to rest in the family plot in the R. C. Cemetery, Beach Hill.
Jim and Kevin Wade, who moved with their parents Mr. And Mrs. Gerald Wade to Philadelphia, U.S.A. six years ago visited their old home town recently to attend the funeral of their grandfather, the late John Kelly.
Also visiting for the Kelly funeral were: the late Mr. Kelly's son, Mike and Mrs. Kelly, grandson Mike Kelly from Gander, also granddaughters Marcella and her husband and Mrs. John Fitzgerald and her husband.

CUPIDS - Passed peacefully away at his home April 7, Mr. Richard Laracy at the age of 82. He leaves to mourn five sons, James, Thomas, Gregory, John at home, and Michael in Ontario. Two daughters, Mary, Mrs. John Power, Cupids, Laura, Mrs. Thomas Morrissey of North River, C.B. Fifteen grandchildren. The funeral took place at Brigus, with High Mass in office Tuesday, April 8, with Rev. Father Matthews and Rev. Father Antle officiating. The write extends sympathy to the members of the family.
MAIDMENT, Rev George Heber

PORT DE GRAVE - After being stricken with anoth heart attack George Heber Maidment, retired Anglican Priest of Port-de-Grave passed away while enroute to hospital on April 19. So ends the long and colorful career of a dedicated life. Father Maidment as he was known was born in Trinity September 19, 1885 where he grew up. After training for the ministry he enlisted and went overseas as Chaplain in the Armed Forces during World War 1 where he earned a military medal for bravery. After returning to Newfoundland he went to the west coast where he ministered both physically and spiritually to his flock in those isolated communities. From there he went to Buchans, while it was still a campsite, and his services had to be conducted in a tent. From there he moved to Port-de-Grave in 1952 and labored faithfully until his retirement in 1962. During his last years he was lovingly cared for by Mrs. Levi Ralph with whom he resided. His funeral took place from St. Luke's Anglican Church (where his body had been lying in state) at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, with 15 clergymen in attendance.
Requiem Mass was said by Rev. J.W. Taylor, assisted by Rev. S. Payne, Rev. E. Willis and the Lord Bishop of Newfoundland, Robert L. Seaborn. Mr. Aubrey Dawe, S.R.N., acted as altar boy. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, the A.C.A.A. and also the pupils of St. Luke's school attended the service in a body. Interment was in St. Luke's Church yard in the shadow of the church he loved so well. Prayers at the graveside were read by Rev. H. Batten and Rev. K. Goldsworthy.
He leaves to mourn two adopted sons, Thomas Baggs of Buchans and Rev. F. Brushett in England, and other relatives and friends.
MAIDMENT, Rev George Heber

BISHOP'S COVE - It was with regret, that we learned of the death of Father G.H. Maidment, on Saturday April 19. Although he was well on in years, he was always very active. He was a very dear friend of the people in this community and was well loved by old and young alike. He was a constant visitor and guest preacher in our church, and it was in this way that we came to know and respect him so well.

Funeral services were conducted by Brigadier Thompson. Interment at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Green's Harbour.
McLEAN, Anastasia

MAKINSONS - We regret to announce the death on April 4 of Anastasia, beloved wife of Thomas McLean, who died at the General Hospital after a long illness at the age of thirty-six. She leaves to mourn their sad loss her husband, thirteen children, father mother Mr. And Mrs. Vincent McHugh of Marysvale, also sister and two brothers. MARYSVALE - The many friends of Anistasia McClein were sorry to hear of her death on April 4. She was 36 and formerly of Marysvale, and daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Vincent McHugh. She leaves to mourn besides her husband, five sons, eight daughters, mother & father, one brother John at Marysvale and one sister Agnes, Mrs. Richard Bartlett of Marysvale. Her funeral was one of the largest to be seen here.
MULLEY, Thomas Hayward

GREEN'S HARBOUR - Passed away at his home at Green's Harbour, April 18, Mr. Thomas Hayward Mulley in 76th year. He was a former resident of Pouch Cove. He moved to Green's Harbour some years ago. He joined the Orange Association at Pouch Cove fifty-seven years ago and when he came to Green's Harbour he became affiliated with the L.O.L. No. 9. The members of the Lodge attended the funeral and paid their respects to their departed brother. Uncle Tom as he was known to all, was liked and respected and had a kindly smile for young and old alike.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Lizzie, one daughter, Mrs. David Verge, one granddaughter Dianne Verge at St. John's, two brothers James and Herbert at Pouch Cove, three sisters Dorcas and Mildred at Pouch Cove, and Cecilia in New York. The funeral took place Sunday April 20. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery at Green's Harbour. Mr. Barrett (undertaker) from Whitbourne took are of all the funeral arrangements and Rev. Adams conducted the burial services.
NICHOLS, William

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away on April 14 at the age of 75 years, William Nichols of Harbour Grace. Mr. Nichols was the son of the late William and Charlotte Nichols of Harbour Grace.
Mr. Nichols served in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during World War I from 1916 to June 1918 when he was discharged - disabled.
His wife, the former Jessis Luscome of Herry Neck, predeceased him 11 years ago.
He leaves to mourn one son, William at Harbour Grace; two daughters, Ruth - Mrs. Harvey Russell, Coley's Point and Gladys - Mrs. Moses Sheppard, Queen's Road, Harbour Grace with whom he resided; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The funeral took place from his daughter's residence, Queen's Road, to St. Paul's Church. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery.
The burial service was conducted by Rev. L.A. Ludlow. Also at the cemetery a short service was conducted by comrades of the Royal Canadian Legion.
RIDEOUT, Frederick

BELL ISLAND - Another of our old and respected citizens, in the person of the late Frederick Rideout, Mercer Street, died on April 25. He was in his eighty-first year.
The late Mr. Rideout was a retired Wabana miner. He was a former native of Pilley's Island, where he worked in the copper mine, previous to coming here, more than fifty years ago.
He is survived by his wife Lillian, two daughters, Fay, (Mrs. Cecil Goobie) St. John's, and Fern (Mrs. A.C. Budgell), and one sister, Mrs. Lillian Baggs, Shearstown, C.B.
The funeral took place from his Mercer Street home. On April 27 the federal ice breaker, Saurel, arrived at Dominion Pier at the graveside. Interment was n the United Church cemetery, The Front.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away recently at Newport, Rhode Island, U.S.A., Mr. William Sacrey in his 82 year.
Mr. Sacrey, formerly of Harbour Grace South had a wide circle of friends in that area. He leaves to mourn his wife and one son, residing in the U.S.A., also one sister, Mrs. James Hunt at Riverhead, Harbour Grace.

HARBOUR GRACE - Passed peacefully away at his late residence, Queen's Road, Harbour Grace on April 29, Mr. Moses Sheppard in his 64th year.
The late Mr. Sheppard was a lifetime resident of Harbour Grace, the son of the late Eldred and Mary Sheppard. He was married to the former Lillian Janes of Upper Island Cove.
He leaves to mourn, his wife, also four brothers; Norman, Richard, Azariah and Harold, all residing at Harbour Grace.
The funeral took place from Parson's Funeral Home to St. Paul's Church. Interment was at the Anglican Cemetery. The burial service was conducted by Rev. L.A. Ludlow.
TUCKER , HEBER

BURNT POINT - Passed peacefully away April 28, 1969, Heber Tucker aged 73 years. Leaving to mourn his sad loss were his wife Mary, one daughter, Elaine; six sons, Lloyd, Warren, Ira, Graham, Alvin and Jack; two brothers, Walter and Adolphus; and one sister Beatrice.
The funeral was held from the United Church on April 30 with Rev. A.S. Murley assisting Rev. E.G. Bailey.

NEW HARBOUR - Passed peacefully away at the Grace General Hospital, April 23, Nehemiah Woodman of New Harbour, Trinity Bay, aged 83 years. Left to mourn their sad loss, his wife, the former Esther West, of Garnish, Fortune Bay; two sons, Thomas at New Harbour, Lloyd at Winterton, Trinity Bay; one daughter Viola, (Mrs. Robert L. Higdon) at New Harbour; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one step-sister, Mrs. Samuel Pitcher of New Harbour and one step-brother, George Hefford of Corner Brook.
Funeral service at the Salvation Army Citadel and graveside was conducted by Capt. B. Goulding also by the Chaplain of the Loyal Orange Lodge.
Interment was at the Salvation Army Cemetery.
Sincere sympathy is extended to all the bereaved children.
