Hodder (Cheffey), Bertha

Passed Away: June 09, 2018

Bertha gracefully passed away on June 9, 2018 surrounded by her two daughters, Bernice and Dolores. Bertha was born on December 28, 1925 in Newfoundland. The daughter of the late Fred and Elizabeth (Noble) Cheffey. Bertha was a pillar of strength and courage to her family and community. Formerly from Gannon Street, Glace Bay, she was a long-time member of the Friendly Neighbourhood Club, a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church and a charter member of St. Mary's A.C.W. for over 70 years acting as president for many of those years. Bertha will be remembered for her outstanding generous hospitality, her strong faith and for making a great cup of tea.

Bertha is survived by her two daughters, Bernice MacIsaac, Victoria, BC and Dolores (Alan) Wilson, Glace Bay; her seven grandchildren, Michelle (John) Baird, Scott (Pamela) MacIsaac, Blaise (Nicole) Wilson, Jamey (Jane) MacIsaac, Shauna (Ian) Johnston, Alison (Mark) Hoogland and Blair (Kat) MacIsaac, and by 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Dora Dardy, NL and many special nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harry in 1970; sisters, Lillian, Susie and May; brothers, William and Thomas, and son-in-law, Alexander (Sandy) MacIsaac. Many thanks to the staff of Seaview Manor who treated her with care and laughter. To Dr. Mark Elleker for his compassionate care for the four years she spent at the Manor.

Visitation will take place at Patten Funeral Home in Glace Bay on Tuesday, June 12 from 2-4 and 7-9, Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating. Interment to follow in St. Mary's Church Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.pattenfuneral.com. Family flowers only. If desired, donations in Bertha's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Neary (Cole), Margaret Jean

Passed Away: June 26, 2018

It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family of Margaret Jean Neary, aged 98, announce her passing on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Victoria Village, Newfoundland on December 22, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William and Ellen (Penney) Cole. Margaret was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Margaret loved and cared for people all of her life. In her early years, she worked as a housekeeper and caregiver, hired privately by families to care for their elderly parents. She shared many fond memories of caring for residents at Mackies Nursing Home in New Aberdeen, Glace Bay.

Margaret's most treasured memories in her life were spent with her family, as she was a great story teller and enjoyed laughing. She'll always be remembered for her great love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her three daughters, Catherine 'Kay' (John), London ON, Helen (Bruce), Diane (Ross), both of Glace Bay; four sons, Andrew (Mary-Anne) ON, Raymond (Barb), Patrick, John (Cathy), all of Glace Bay. Margaret is survived by five generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. A special mention to her beloved cat, Fluffy, who will miss her dearly. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Andrew; two children in infancy; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sisters, Elizabeth, Lynn, and brothers, Richard, Alex, Silas and William.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 1 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Reception will follow in funeral home. Interment will be in St. Anne's cemetery. Donations in memory of Margaret Neary can be made to the local Alzheimer's Society. The family would like to send a special thank you to the amazing staff of the Victoria Haven Nursing Home with special mention to John, who she adored so much for the kindness and compassion provided to our mother during her stay. Seymour, Bertrum "Bert"

Passed Away: June 11, 2018

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bertrum Seymour, age 70, on Monday, June 11, 2018. Born in Port aux Basques on June 9, 1948, Bert was the son of the late Michael and Blanche (Musseau) Seymour. He is survived by his wife, Colleen (Lovell) Seymour; daughter, Kim (Greg) Hoeg; sons, Michael (Charlene) Seymour and Dennis (Jacqueline) Seymour. He is also survived by grandsons, Ryan (Amy) Seymour, and Riley Seymour and granddaughters, Andie-Jean and Vada, who was also his best friend. He also leaves behind his brothers, Charlie (Irene), Leonard, Don (Geneva), Gordon (Sherry), Llewelyn (Debbie), Dave (Jeanie); half-brother, Rick (Monique) Reid; sisters, Margaret (Johnny) Hodgson, Eileen Sampson, Pearl (Bobby) Barron; sister-in-law, Marilyn Seymour; as well as his special brother-in-law, Earl Hodgson. Besides his parents, Bert was predeceased by his brothers, Percy, Raymond, Michael, and Gary, and sisters, Jane Hodgson, Vera Penney, Violet Seymour, Dorothy Seymour and Phyllis Osmond. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Eugene Ignacio, Danielle, Pam and Janet, the paramedics and the first responders. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bert's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Diabetes Association. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Slaney, Roger

Passed Away: June 24, 2018

It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Roger Slaney on Sunday June 24, 2018 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Roger was born in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland to Herb and Therese Slaney on May 15, 1960. Roger was a man of various talents. He was an accomplished musician who shared his love of music by teaching others to play the guitar and played with many bands over the years. He was a talented soccer player and coach in his younger years. In his 30-year career with the Canadian Coast Guard; he was highly respected by his peers and was presented with immediate awards for his performance on the job. But most importantly, he was a loving man with a fantastic sense of humour and boundless compassion. People always felt that he "had their back" and he always made them feel like they had a special connection. He was a wonderful husband, son, father, brother, and friend.

Roger was predeceased by his father, Herb Slaney, and is survived by his wife, Valerie; his sons, Ryan (Krista) and Tristan; his mother, Therese, as well as his siblings, Christina (Jacques) Perrot, Gary Slaney, Rudy (Karen) Slaney, Lisa (Jim) Loder, Sonia (Andy) Slaney, Rodney (Barb) Slaney and Claudia (Frank) Brockerville. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 2 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel to be followed by a reception at the Canadian Coast Guard College. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice will be appreciated. In August 2018 a service will be held in St. Lawrence where his ashes will be put in his final resting place. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com
