Burt (Burton), Sadie

Passed Away: July 23, 2018

It is with sorrow we announce the unexpected death of Sadie Burt, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, on Monday, July 23, 2018, at the Northside General Hospital. She died just days after celebrating her 97th birthday with her family. Born in Anderson's Cove, NL, on July 18, 1921, Sadie was the daughter of her beloved parents, Rebecca (Bond) and Thomas Burton. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney and a past member of the Altar Guild and Married Couples Association. Sadie was an avid knitter and excellent baker and she loved doing both for her family who were most important to her. She lived life to its fullest right up until her final moments. She had a great sense of humour and she knew what was best for her children even before they did.

First and foremost Sadie was a proud Newfoundlander. She is survived by her children, Evelyn (Doug) Schaller, Sydney Forks, Margaret (Don) Cowan, London, ON, George (Donna) Burt, Bras d'Or, Susan (Fred) Rahey, Halifax, Tom Burt, Halifax, and daughter-in-law, Margaret. She is lovingly survived by her eleven grandchildren, Christine Elliott, Ian and Colin Cowan, Vaughn, Leah and Lina Burt, Rebecca and Stephen Rahey and Michael, Daniel and Katherine Burt; six great-grandchildren, Gemma, Ocean, Evan, Ella, Kinsley and Kaelyn. Also surviving is her sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Eddie Bruce; her special niece, Janie Riggs in Grand Bank, NL and many other nieces and nephews across Canada. Sadie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her much loved husband of 73 years, George S. Burt; her parents; her sisters, Emily Melloy, Janie Piercey, Evelyn Rodgers, Dora Dominix and Elsie Munster; her brothers, James, Fred, Tom and Calvin Burton, and son-in-law, Michael Elliott. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Patrick O'Grady for the care and compassion shown to both Sadie and George over the years. Also a very special thank you to Valerie and Jimmy Nelson whose loving care allowed our mother to remain in her home as she wished.

Visitation for Sadie will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday (today) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Clarke-Gaskell, Lorraine Mary

Passed Away: July 24, 2018

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Lorraine Clarke-Gaskell, announce her passing on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving husband Terry, children, grandchildren and sisters. Born in Terrenceville, NFLD on May 16, 1955 she was the daughter of the late John and Rebecca Clarke. Lorraine's family always came first. She was her happiest when surrounded by them. She is survived by her loving husband, Terry Gaskell; children, Angie (Haven), Richard (Frankie), Holly (Rob) and Jonathan (Robyn); stepsons, Jason (Katie) and Justin (Jenny); eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy; siblings, Frank, Margaret, Norman, Sylvia and Pauline. Besides her parents, Lorraine was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy and Lillian, and brothers, Michael and George. Visitation for the late Lorraine Clarke-Gaskell will be held in the JM Jobes Funeral Home Ltd., Sydney Mines, on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, July 27 at 1 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Greg Murphy officiating. Crant, Vincent Thomas "Tom"

Passed Away: July 18, 2018

We the family regret to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Vincent Thomas 'Tom' Crant, 85, of Louisbourg, formerly from D'Espoir, NFLD. Tom passed away peacefully, on July 18, 2018 at the CBRH with his loving wife of 57 years by his side, and is finally gone to a better place after years of suffering and pain. Tom was loved and admired by all who knew him. He was a kind and gentle soul, and a true Newfie till the end. Tom lived in Bay D'Espoir until 1978, when he decided to move his family to Louisbourg. Before his retirement Tom was a cutter with National Sea Products, Louisbourg. He was a member of St. Bartholomews Anglican Church. He loved music and spending time with his family whom he treasured.

He is survived by his wife, Mazie (Bowles); son, Cecil (Mary Lynn); his granddaughter, the light of his life, Amanda (Ryan), also two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Mya, who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by sister, Elizabeth Lee. He is predeceased by both his parents; two sisters, and two brothers. The family would like to send a special thanks to nieces, Wavey and Glenda for their visits and boosting his spirits. Dr. Jean Crosbie, the Palliative Care doctors and nurses, VON, and especially to his home care workers who were so tender and caring to him.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 20, 2018 from 6-9 p.m. at St. Bartholomew's Church, Louisbourg. Funeral service will be held the following day, Saturday, at 1p.m. in St. Bartholomews Church with Rev. Glen Kent Officiating. Burial to follow in parish cemetery. Day (Hancock), Patricia Elaine "Katie"

Passed Away July 06, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Patricia 'Katie' Elaine (Hancock) Day, age 72, on Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital. Born August 20, 1945 in Hampden, NL, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Pansie (Regular), Hancock. Katie worked for many years as a Bus/Lunch monitor at Seton Elementary and Thompson Jr. High Schools in North Sydney. She loved spending time with children and was very proud of her work with the Breakfast Program at Thompson. She also worked at Robena's restaurant in North Sydney and became well known for her cooking.

She is survived by her four children, Alicia (Paul) Gordon, Wanda (Gary) Spurvey, both of North Sydney, Frank Day (Krista Lenihan), Pine Grove, NS, Cora (Chris) Jones, Goose Bay, Labrador; her five grandchildren, Cheyenne, John-Ryan, Jenna-Lee, Savannah, Maverick and Seth on the way; her two great-grandchildren, Leah and Aubrey; five brothers, Monte (Authorine) Hancock, Reg (May) Hancock, Christopher (Donna) Hancock, all of Deer Lake, NL, Al (Vera) Hancock, Terrace, BC, Dennis Hancock, Edmonton; four sisters, Phoebe (Bob) Gillam, Cornerbrook, NL, Grace (Tony) Sutton, Cormack, NL, Verna (Baxter) Hoyles and Diane Hancock, both of Terrace, BC. Katie was predeceased by her husband, John Day; her sisters, Carol M. Lavers, Sandra, and a brother, Eugene.

There will be no visitation by request. A private family burial will take place at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Hooper (Mullins), Elizabeth "Betty"

With broken hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Betty Hooper, age 74, on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Grand Bank, NL, on November 14, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Lawson and Myrtle (Hodder) Mullins. Betty was a devoted wife and mother who took great pride in caring for her family. She was happiest spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren or in her kitchen preparing meals and baking with them. She enjoyed reading, gardening and loved sewing and was a proud Sea Cadet Mom (#129 Caribou Sea Cadets) for over forty years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and a former member of the ACW. Betty is survived by her four children, Patsy (David) Murray, Ruth (Danny) Walsh, Shawn (Bonnie) Hooper, all of North Sydney and Linda Moore, Edmonton; eight grandchildren, Holly (David), Caelin (Jesse), Nathan (Crystal), Patrick, Max, Amy, Mason and Stephen (Alicia); seven great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Max, Mya, Parker, Ella, Owen and Aubrey; her companion, Ronald Robertson; son-in-law, John Moore; two brothers, Edward (Hannah) Mullins and William (Muriel) Mullins; sisters, Rosena Egan, Vera (Paul) Kavanaugh and Susan Martin; sisters-in-law, Gwen, Grace (Stephen), Marjorie and Mary; brothers-in-law, Nelson, Edward and Douglas; many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, Max Hooper; brothers, Graham and Willoughby Mullins, Clarence Hodder; sisters, Sharon and Daisy; sisters-in-law, Meta and Ruby, and brother-in-law, William. Visitation for Betty will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Skinner (Caines), Sarah

Passed Away: July 31, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sarah Skinner on July 31, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with loving family at her side. Born in Burnt Island NFL she was the daughter of the late William Caines and Harriette Adams. Sarah was a member of St Mary's Anglican Church and spent many hours volunteering with the Parish's social committee. She is survived by daughters, Sheila McDonald and Rayleen (Edmond) MacNeil; sons, Gary (Sheila) and Cordel (Johanna); sisters, Diane (Jim) Anderson and Rayleen Sheaves; brother, Bill (Mary) Caines; grandchildren, Gary, Aaron, Craig, Ryan, Kyle, Andrew and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Lukas, Madden, Teddy, Zoey, Finn and Wyatt. Besides her parents she was predeceased by husband, John; son, Glen "Mouse" and brothers, Minter and Amos. In following Sarah's wishes there will be no visitation, Funeral service will take place on Friday August 3, 2018 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church with burial to follow in parish cemetery.
