GILLIS, Francis 'Frank' Dominic

Passed on: August 10th, 2012

Passed away in the arms of his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital late Friday night.
Born in the Highlands, N.L., Frank was the eldest son of the late Dorothy 'Dot' and Arnold Gillis. For over 35 years, Frank worked for Devco mostly as a buyer. He devoted much of his energy and time in boy scouts, notably the 1st Bridgeport Dominion Scout Troop. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church serving as lector and parish council member and also the Mens' Club. He also served as a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and served as a leader and spiritual adviser with the Christopher Leadership Program.

He was a former board member of the Dominion Credit Union and a member of the KOC. He was also an active member of the Heritage School House Museum. His favourite pastimes included playing his guitar, his garden, camping, golfing and rooting for the Detroit Red Wings team.

Frank is survived by his wife, Theresa, daughter, Colleen (Bernie); son, Paul (Miranda); brothers, Martin (Diane), Rev. John, Alex, James and sisters, Martina (Wilfred), Trudy, Regina (Kevin), Cathy (John) and the pride and love of his life, his granddaughter, Bethany whom he loving referred to as "sweetie pie"; many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Paul (infancy), Leo and Kevin.

Many thanks to the staff of ICU at the regional hospital. Visitation will be held at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Monday, Aug. 13) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be officiated by Fr. John Gillis and Fr. Daniel Boudreau at Immaculate Conception Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14. Interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.


OSBORNE, Winnifred Maude (nee Scott)

It is with sadness but great joy we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother into the presence of our Savior on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Little Bay East, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Alice (Thornhill) Scott. Winnie worshipped at the Westside Bible Chapel.

Winnie is survived by her children, Eileen (Gordon) Cummings, Ontario, Juanita (David) Pero, Ontario, Jacob Osborne, North Sydney, Scott (Jennifer) Osborne, Ontario, Kim (Ian) McCulloch, North Sydney; 13 grandchildren, Lisa, Nicole, Shannon, Leanne, David Scott, Apryl, Adrian, Micah, Ryan, Brittany, Jacob, Benjamin, Sophia Winnifred; 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, George (Georgina) Scott, Halifax, Mildred (Peter) Harrison, Baddeck, Lillian (Allan) Radford, B.C.; nieces and nephews as well as special cousins, Rendell and Ruthie Thornhill. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jacob, siblings, Archibald Scott, Sarah 'Sadie' Bennett.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 24 from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Westside Bible Chapel, corner of Coxheath Road and Keltic Drive, Sydney River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons International in Canada.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Florence Weir, on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Petty Harbour, N.L., she was the daughter of the late George and Jessie (Chafe) Whitten. Florence worked as a seamstress in her younger years, and then devoted her life to caring for her husband Lloyd and their children. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.

She is survived by her three sons, Harold (Helen Wall), North Sydney, Wayne (Diane), Antigonish, Keith (Linda Croft), Bridgewater; her two daughters, Darlene (Shawn Martell), Lisa Weir, both of Halifax; by her seven grandchildren, Matthew, Chad, Chase, Jennifer, David, Maiya and Keara. Florence was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, her son, Perry, two infant sons, Blair, Lloyd, her two brothers, Tom, John Whitten and her sister, Hannah Pack.

Visitation for Florence will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Debbie Strickland officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
