Mom died peacefully Sept. 3, 2010, at Victoria Haven Nursing Home where she had been a resident for 10 years. Previous to that she made her home on Gallant Street for 50 years. Born in the small coastal village of Petites, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Sarah (Courtney) Collins. Arriving in Glace Bay she met and married Daniel William MacDonald and became a devoted wife and loving mother to six boys and one daughter.

Struggling to manage on a miner's wage she became adept at making a meal out of a trout. Working from early morning to late night, it was said we were the best scrubbed kids in town. She was a long time active member of Bethel Family Church. She was also a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Survived by six children, Al (Judy), Bedford Que., Forbes (Jean) Mississauga, Ont., Bill (LaVerne), Edmonton, Alta., Doug (Linda), Mississauga, Ont., Len (Barb), Antigonish, N.S. Anita (Harry) MacDonald, Reserve Mines: sister, Netta Loader, Liverpool, N.S.; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and dear friend, Daphne England. She was predeceased by her husband, Dan; son, Stan; granddaughter, Karen; grandson, Ian; sister, Lena MacDonald; brothers, Stan, Edgar and Garland.

Visitation for Clara will take place at Patten Funeral Home, on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Bethel Family Church, Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Reception to follow at the church hall. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel Family Church or to a charity of choice.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary B. MacDonald, 93, a longtime resident of Regent Street, North Sydney, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, in the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney, Oct. 9, 1916, she was the daughter of the late John William 'J.W.' of Guysborough Co., and Elizabeth (Devereaux) MacDonald, of Logy Bay, N.L. Mary B. was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, North Sydney, member of the CWL, past president of Seaview Golf Club, an avid curler at the former Sydney Mines Curling Club and and ardent crib player. She enjoyed tennis, golf, bridge, and most of all her extended family. Mary B. was employed with Smith's Wholesale.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and will be missed by her many nieces and nephews. Mary B. was predeceased by sisters, Isabel MacLean, Antigonish, Kathleen MacNeil, Frenchvale, Teresa Cadegan-MacLellan, North Sydney, infant sister, Peggy, brother, John Pat MacDonald, Sydney Mines. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood, officiating. Burial to take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Society or a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to W.J. VALLIS, Laura E.

It is with deep regret that we, the family, announce the passing of Laura Vallis on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at the Cove Guest Home. Born in Cul-de-Sac, N.L., she was the daughter of the late George and Laura (Banfield) Spencer. Laura enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, she also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and baking. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church, Louisbourg.

Laura is survived by her loving husband, Ben; four children, daughter, Donna (James) Ley, Port Hardy, B.C.; sons, Ben (Mette) Vallis, Keene, Ont., Roy (Gina) Vallis, Oakview, U.S.A., Edwin 'Eddie' (Sheila) Vallis, Catalone. She is also survived by her sister, Eileen Staples, Newfoundland; her brother, Cecil (Rene) Spencer, Florida; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughters, Audrey Ley, (Sandra and Wanda) in infancy, sister, Rita, brothers, LeRoy, George, William and Frank. Special thanks to the staff at the Cove Guest Home, for their dedication, compassion and kindness toward our mom and providing excellent care for her over the past six years. Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. , 82, of Glace Bay passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Raised in Rose Blanche, N.L., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Minnie (Billard) Bird. Josephine will be sadly missed by her loving daughter, Kathleen (George) Slade, Glace Bay; her brother, Clayton; stepsister, Dora; stepbrother, Lewis; by her grandchildren, Daniel, Gerry, William, Nicole; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Freeman, brother, Gilbert, sister, Dorce and stepbrothers, Cecil, Ray, Frank and Cyril. Visitation for Josephine Warren will be held Thursday, Sept. 23 at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay from 1-2 p.m. with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Richard Volkes officiating.
