Edward Joseph Costello
, 74, of Monteith Avenue, Westmount, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at home. Born in Harbour Main, Nfld., he was the son of the late Frank and Mae (Grace) Costello. After leaving Newfoundland, he worked with CN in Ontario and then INCO, Sudbury, before retiring to Cape Breton in 1991.

Edward is survived by his brother, John, Westmount; niece, Juanita Costello-Nichol and her husband, Bradley Nichol. He was predeceased by two sisters in infancy. There will be no visitation. Margaret H. (Whalen) Curran
, 96, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, in New Jersey, at the home of her daughter, Eileen, with whom she was residing at the time. Margaret was born Sept. 1, 1913 in Colliers, Newfoundland. She was a former resident of Sydney, residing at Elmwood Avenue and lastly at Wesley Street with her son, William, before moving to New Jersey to be with her daughter. She is survived by her loving children, William Curran, Mary Pozar and Eileen (Frank) O'Grady. Margaret is also survived by her 12 cherished grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Patrick Curran; her daughter, Betty and her sons, Thomas and Patrick.


VARDY, Betty Marie (Gillingham)

As another angel is called to heaven, we mourn the death of our mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Betty Marie Vardy who passed away quietly on Aug. 1, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital surrounded by family and close friends.

Formerly from Valley Pond, Newfoundland, Betty was the eldest daughter of Reginald and Renee (Bartlett) Gillingham. Betty moved to Cape Breton in 1970 to work at the Northside General Hospital as a licensed practical nurse, where she worked for 34 years until her retirement in 2005. The number of lives that she has touched in that period are too numerous to mention.

Betty was predececeased by the love of her life, Berkley Vardy and her mother, Renee Gillingham. She is survived by her children, Rhea Vardy-MacPhee (Duncan), Paul (Deidrea Parks), Mark (Tina); her grandchildren, whom she adored and who loved her dearly, Rachael and Monica MacPhee, Lauren and Charlotte Vardy and Hunter Stevens. She is also survived by her father, Reginald Gillingham, and siblings, Maise (Morley) Rideout, Sandra (Mike) Penney, Joyce (David) Osmond and Norris (Karen) Gillingham, all of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Interment of Berkley and Betty will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. VATCHER, Louis

Louis Vatcher
, 76, of Whitney Pier, passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, after a brief battle with cancer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in British Harbour, Trinity Bay, Nfld., he was the son of the late Elias John and Mary Patience (Vokey) Vatcher. Louis retired from the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in 1998 after 45 years service as a painter at the Sydney City Hospital. He was a member of St. Albans Anglican Church.

Louis is predeceased by his wife, Jean (Dawe) Vatcher, Jan. 2, 2009. Louis is survived by daughters, Donna Brown, Sydney, Margaret Vatcher (Mike), Sydney, Karen (John) Bell, Eureka, N.S.; sons, Kenneth (Pamela), Reserve Mines, and David (Sabrina), Sydney; sisters, Elizabeth Wiseman, Newfoundland, Olive George, Newfoundland; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Maggie Coleman officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Albans Church, or Cape Breton Regional Hospital, palliative care unit. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca
