Muriel Ivy Dicks, 93
, a resident of the Northside Guest Home, and formerly of 7 Union St., North Sydney, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Guest Home. Born in Little Bay West, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Simeon T. and Edith J. (Warren) May. She worked as a housekeeper for many years with the Fowler, Crewes, and Moores families. She was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, North Sydney.

Surviving are two daughters, Blanche (Revie) Finney, North Sydney, Mary Ann "Polly" (Mrs. Bud Reid), Shelburne, N.S.; son, William "Bud" (Dorothy) Dicks, North Sydney; a sister, Gertrude MacDonald, North Sydney; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, William Elliott Dicks, daughter, Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" MacRae, two brothers, John and Earl, four sisters, Mabel, Olive, Leah and Blanche. A private family visitation to be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral services to be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Lyons officiating. Cremation to follow with burial at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.


HEFFERNAN, Theresa M., 75

Theresa M. Heffernan, 75
, of Tillock Dr., Sydney, formerly of Roberts St., Whitney Pier, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, July 31, 2001. Born in Codroy Valley, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Gale. Theresa was a member of St. Theresa's Church, Sydney. Surviving are her sons, Wayne (Germaine) and William (Elaine) Gale, both of Sydney; sister Margaret Crouse, Annapolis Valley; brother Pat Gale, Codroy Valley; grandchildren, Shauna and Tara Gale and Ashley, Michael and Joseph Heffernan; special nephew Melvin (Carol) Heffernan, Marion Bridge; special grandnephews, Daryl and Blaine Heffernan. Theresa was predeceased by her husband William Joseph; sisters, Sophia Smith and Kathleen Bower; brothers, Simon and Edward. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa's Church 11 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydmemchapel@ns.sympatico.ca


MARKS, George, 83

George Marks, 83
, of 121 Pond Rd., Sydney Mines, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Burin, Nfld., he was the son of the late William Henry and Edith (Rose) Marks. He was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines. He was employed at Florence Colliery until its closure and then operated a bus service to Princess and Prince Colliery. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas in Holland, France, Belgium, and England, and was a life-member of Branch No. 83, Royal Canadian Legion, Florence.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor (Sexton); son Andrew; sister, Edie Dicks, Sydney; stepsister, Evelyn Rankin, Sydney Mines; half-sister, Bertha Pink, North Sydney; half-brother, Walter Marks, Florence. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Loretta; brothers, Douglas, Chesley, Bill, Lionel and Russell; sisters, Gertrude, Eliza and Victoria; stepsister, Mary and half-brother, Alexander. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Carman United Church, Rev. Allan Hallett officiating. Donations may be made to Carman United Church Memorial Fund or any charity.


MATTHEWS, Gordon, 69
North Sydney
Gordon Matthews
, age 69, a resident of Wilkie Avenue, North Sydney, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at his summer residence at MacDougall's Brook, Port aux Basques, Nfld. Born in Port Aux Basques, he was a son of the late Ernest and Melida (Kendall) Matthews. He was employed as an engineer with CN Marine in North Sydney and later with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, serving on the CSS Hudson and various other vessels until his retirement. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and was Worshipful Master of Coronation Lodge, North Sydney.

Surviving are four daughters, Lydia Matthews, Dora Matthews, Linda Matthews, Faye (Claude) Denney, all of North Sydney; five grandchildren, Lisa, Gordie, Jonathan, Gregory and Amanda; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Tyler, Jordan and Faith; one sister, Mary (Eric) Sheaves, North Sydney; two brothers, Ivan (Sarah), Richard (Sharon), both of North Sydney; three stepsisters, Madelyn(Banks) MacLean, North Sydney, Gloria (Raymond) Rolfe, Sydney, Tina (Walter) Jesso, Greenwood; one stepbrother, Garland Lilly, Sydney. Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Claretta (Billard) Matthews, by his stepmother, Alice Matthews, special father-in-law, Cecil Billard. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Service, 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Family flowers only by request. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of N.S. or to a charity of choice.
