Mary Jane Besso
, 75, of Webster Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday, June 13, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Carbonear, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Lenora (Howell) Marshall. She was a member of the Sydney Pentecostal Church, 20 Victoria Road. She is survived by four daughters, Phyllis (Charles) Halloran, Bonnie Nicholson (Companion Peter Hill), Linda (Dennis) Weatherby, Virginia (Wesley) Cromwell; three sons, Billy (Hilma), Wayne (Tonya) and Brian (Karen), all of Sydney; 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; brother, John Marshall, Sydney. She was predeceased by her husband, William Henry Besso; one great-grandchild, Matthew Besso; sister, Elsie Mae in infancy. Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in Sydney Pentecostal Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Terrance Carew officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

John Joseph (Jack) Thomey

Jack Thomey
of 105 Windsor Street, Sydney, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born at Harbour Grace, Nfld., he was the son of the late Matthew and Mary (Ryan) Thomey. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier. He was employed with the Sydney Steel Corp. in the Blooming Mill until his retirement in 1989. He is survived by his sister Margaret with whom he resided; two brothers, Harry, Victoria Rd., Sydney and Bill, Cusack Dr., Sydney; also survived by many nieces and nephews. The late Mr. Thomey will have visitation from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Monday (today) at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Holy Redeemer Church with Father E. MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Barbara M. (Bessie) Hodder
, 89, a resident of 49 Prince St., North Sydney, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 16, 1999. Born in St. Bernards, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Frances (Dimmer) Hodder. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, North Sydney. Surviving are a sister, Vera (Mrs. Jack Power), brother, Louis (Mary), sisters-in-law, Tryphena, Hilda and Mary E., brother-in-law, George, all of St. Bernards, Nfld. Also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews. She was well known for her friendly personality and will be sadly missed by family and friends especially Mrs. Elizabeth Ashford and niece, Elaine (Ted), who resided with her and Delores and Bill Crawford. She was predeceased by good friend and companion, George Hacala, five brothers, Albert, Reginald, Johnny, Gordon and Henry and one sister, Bridget. Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be Saturday 2 p.m. from St. Joseph's Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society

Harold Peach
, 82, of 126 Lake Road, Glace Bay, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Salmon Cove, Nfld., he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Parson) Peach. Mr. Peach was a member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay. Mr. Peach worked as a coal miner in No. 4, 24 and 26 collieries, retiring in 1969. Survived by his wife of 58 years, Alma (Horwood) Peach; daughters, Amderine (Mrs. David Gillard), Madonna (Mrs. Hector Leonard), both of Corner Brook, Nfld.; son, James (Rose) Peach, Glace Bay; sisters, Lilly (Mrs. Clarence Thompson), St. John's, Nfld. and eight grandchildren. Predeceased by a brother, William, Salmon Cove, Nfld. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 19, 1999, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Sunday, June 20, 1999 at 3:30 p.m. in Epworth United Church, Glace Bay with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Highway. Family flowers only by request. Donations may be made to the Lung Association or to a charity of one's choice

, 81, of Downsview, Ont., formerly of Sydney, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 1999. Born in Avondale, Nfld., she was a member of St. Wilfred's Church. She is lovingly survived by three sons, Terry, Andy and Joseph, all of Ontario; three daughters, Dorothy and Alice, both of Ontario and Jeanette, Sydney; one brother, Richard, Sydney and one sister, Pearl, Ontario; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph. Resting in Ward's Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Rd., Weston, Ont. Funeral mass to be held Saturday morning in St. Wilfred's Church. Burial to take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks at an undetermined date. Catherine will be sadly missed by all who loved her spirit for life.
