TARRANT, PATRICK JAMES
May 19, 1932 - May 9, 2022
Patrick James Tarrant
, 89, originally of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2022, after a long and dignified struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 35 years, Barbara (Smith), and was predeceased by his first wife Mary Doreen (Keane). Patrick came from a large family, and is predeceased by his sisters Ella (Burt), Fluorina (Polych), and his brothers Alexander, and Cyril (aged 4). He is missed by his siblings Carmel (Turpin), Madeline (Banfield), Margaret (Campbell), Gus, Cyril, and many loving nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his five children and their spouses: Anna-Marie (John Raftery), Patrick (late Kathryn Barger), Dennis (Caroline Burns), John (Stephen Quinn), and Joanne (Donald Neubert) and their children Julia Doreen, Tara Anne, James Keanen, Joseph Dean, Lindy Alexander, and Lee Gerhardt, all of whom he loved tremendously. Also remembering him are his stepsons Ryan Neal Shorten (Theresa Ennis) and Richard Jason Shorten and their children Sarah Mary Anne, Michelle Madelena, and Richard Quinn. When Patrick left the island of Newfoundland as a young man, he had no idea he would influence so many people along the way. Large in stature and large in life, Patrick was someone who positively affected the lives of so many people; directly or indirectly. Many people can credit where they are today to his optimism, unflinching candour, and faith in them. To his last days, he always remembered where he was from. As so many of his generation did in Canada, he made his way to a new mining town (Schefferville, Que.) to find work in a place where common sense, decency, and grit were calling cards of success. By his mid-twenties, and with no formal education, he became the head of personnel for the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), a role in which he travelled, as he recruited people to work in the mines. He later rose in the personal insurance business (Sunlife) and operated diverse businesses in Labrador City, where he helped build the community in its earliest days through his work as Chairman of the School Board and as an active member of the Lion's Club during the 1960s. Many will also remember him for establishing and developing Mary Brown's Fried Chicken (1969), a company that remains and clearly traces its origins to Newfoundland. Patrick was always proud to be from "The Rock," but he probably never knew just how much he was our rock. He will be deeply missed, but we pray he finally rests in peace. We are thankful for the wonderful care Pat received at Extendicare Mississauga, especially during very harrowing times. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of Peel. Friends may call at Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga for visitation on Thursday, May 13, 2022 from 3-8 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, 4070 Central Pkwy, Mississauga on Friday, May 13, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. Interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Woodbridge.

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
From the beginning...to the end
He noted that first came the date her of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash 1926-2022 between those years
For that dash represents all the time
That they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
Know what that little line is worth
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash
.

WALSH, JOHN FREDERICK "Jack"
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late John Frederick 'Jack' Walsh of St. Lawrence announces his passing. Jack passed away at the US Memorial Hospital in St. Lawrence on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the age of 68. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 42 years, Lil; son, John Walsh (Angie) of Dartmouth, NS; daughter, Robyn Cramm (Steve) of Grand Prairie, AB; four grandchildren, Madeline, Jade, Nathan, Jacob; brother, Mario Walsh; brothers-in-law, Joe Brenton, Joe Manning (Paula), Fred Cleal; sisters-in-law, Annie Walsh, Mabel Moulton (Gerald), Sharon Manning, Pauline Beazley (Dave), Bonnie Tobin (Brian); many nephews and nieces; plus a large circle of extended family and friends. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Margaret Walsh; parents-in-law, Joe and Flora Manning; siblings Joe Walsh, Emily Kettle (Albert), Shirley Brenton, and Keith Walsh; special aunt Loretta Walsh; nephew Keith Walsh and Max Kettle; brothers-in-law, John Manning and Dale Tobin; sister-in-law Karen Cleal. Jack Walsh was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. In his early life he served with the Peacekeeping forces of the United Nations, then returned to his hometown town of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland where his strong sense of duty and service continued to positively impact the lives of many who knew him. He was a practical joker with a heart of gold who thoroughly enjoyed working with his OCI family. He enjoyed spending time in nature and instilled a love of the outdoors in his family. He loved going into the country, camping, and quadding. He took pleasure taking his beloved dogs for walks, trouting, and berry picking with his wife, Lil, and enjoyed many game nights with his son John, daughter-in-law Angie, and granddaughter Madeline. He was known to many as Jackie or Jack, but his favorite endearment was Poppy Jack. He spent a lot of time on Facetime with his grandchildren and was looking forward to their trip home this summer. He had plans with his grandsons, Nathan, and Jacob to catch 'the big one' and then teach their dad, Steve, how to properly fillet it. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Robyn, and granddaughter, Jade, who he lovingly called his "nookers". The Walsh Family will be accepting visitors at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in St. Lawrence, NL on Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd, 2022, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church St. Lawrence, on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 2:30pm. Interment to follow at Mount Cecilia Roman Catholic Cemetery. No flowers by request of the family. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. Those who have lived deeply have no fear of death and will live on in the hearts of their loved ones for eternity. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Wiseman's Funeral Homes - Burin.
