FARRELL, MARTIN
Martin Farrell passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Miller Centre in St. John's on March 2, 2024 at age 69 years. Born in St. John's, NL, he was predeceased by his father Martin Farrell, mother Mary (Dober) Farrell and brothers Joseph Farrell and John Thomas Farrell. He is survived by his wife Lizeta (Nolan) and sons Ian (Jennifer), Marc (Sherri-Lee), grandchildren Evan, Liam & Katie Farrell, Mason Power, and Eve & Leah Elson, sisters Bride Farrell (Graham Stebbings) and Nora Lake (Peter), brothers Bern (Marg), John (Rosemary), Norman & Clarence Farrell (Mary-Lou Bennett). He is also survived by his in-laws, Lenora Dober (Bernard), Pauline Cameron, Maureen Nolan (Rudy Banfield) and Vincent Nolan. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends. Martin was a lifelong educator. His teaching career began in Cartwright in 1975 and it was where his love of Labrador and the north was born. In 1977, teaching took him to Goose Bay and onto Churchill Falls in 1979. At Eric G. Lambert School, he later moved into administration, serving as school vice-principal. He was a dedicated teacher who truly invested in his students and helped them see their potential, in the classroom and beyond, whether it was through running or chess clubs. And while many tried to out run him, we're pretty sure no one ever did. Martin's speed on his feet was only matched by the speeds he liked to travel on his skidoo, leaving anyone on board holding on for dear life. More than once, as he tore down a lake, Marc or Ian recall being catapulted off into the snow, something he only noticed once he slowed down at the other end. A longtime member of the Northern Rangers and the Churchill Falls Mine and Rescue team, Martin loved adventure, to be outdoors and part of a group, and to be called on out of the blue to help. Martin 'retired' from teaching in 2006, but never seemed to fully understand what that meant. Not one to sit at home, before long he was back teaching in northern Manitoba with his sister Nora. He also explored other paths - he owned a gas station for a while, got his real estate license, went to work for the Commissionaires and drove a school bus. He also considered joining the Air Force and regularly peppered his niece Melanie with questions about life in the military. In 2013, he headed to Igloolik, Nunavut where he served as principal and vice principal over six years. He also ran the school's breakfast program, and was out the door early every morning to make toast and the macaroni soup his students raved about. Martin loved to cook, with a good shot of brandy often serving as his secret ingredient in dishes he whipped up at home. His Boxing Day brunches were legendary and those lucky enough to swing an invite left stuffed to the gills. As his grandkids will attest, even his tea tasted good, as they dipped many pieces of toast into his cup. Anyone who knew Martin knew he was not blessed with much in the way of patience - something he came by honestly. His Irish temper was legendary among his students, who had a healthy fear of making him mad. The little patience he had was particularly tested when he set about building his cabin on Doghouse Lake in Churchill. Ian recalls learning to swear from the days he tagged along during its construction. That said, Martin's bark was much worse than his bite. He was an animal lover who had a very short-lived hunting career, as he couldn't bring himself to hurt the beautiful caribou with the big brown eyes that passed through Churchill most winters. He would spend hours in the backyard watching birds and squirrels and took great pleasure playing with his dogs Storm and Treasure. When he finally retired from teaching and left Nunavut, the many dogs he fed and helped while he was there probably missed him the most. He took less mercy on those he played cards with. He loved a rowdy game with friends, when the men often faced off against the women. And as someone always prone to mischief, he never shied away from a bit of cheating if it meant he won in the end and walked away with bragging and taunting rights. Martin meant a lot to many and his witty nature was often at the heart of laughs with his family and friends. He's gone far too soon and certainly won't be hard to miss. He leaves a huge hole in our lives in his wake. Visitation for family members will be held Tuesday, March 5 from 1-2 pm at Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road in St. John's. A public visitation will also be held Tuesday, March 5 from 2-4 pm, and again at 7-9 pm. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am at Sacred Heart Parish in Marystown on Wednesday, March 6. Burial will follow.

JONES, EUGENE
It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, & fur grandpa. Eugene Jones passed peacefully away at his home in Petite Forte, at the age of 78 on Monday March 4, 2024. Leaving to mourn with broken hearts are his wife Geraldine of 46 years, daughter Pauline (Kevin) Marystown, son Randy (Laura) Boat Harbour. His pride and joys his grandchildren Cameron and Brayden. His fur grandkids Skipper, Katie & Jersey; brothers Anthony (Angela), Felix (Kay), Peter (Margaret); sister Cecilia Pearson; sisters-in-law Sadie, Marg, Ann, Linda (Clyde); brothers-in-law Terry (Blanche), Frank (Paula), Jack (Glenda), & Ernie Collins. His buddies Earl Hickey, Wayne Smith, Lester Antle & Roy Hillier plus a large circle of other family and friends.
Predeceased by his parents Peter and Irene Jones, parents-in-law Mary and Frank Leonard, brothers Pius, Tom, Gerald, Dolph & Ambrose; sister-in-law Nellie Collins; brother-in-law Peter Power; nephew Jeff Jones; niece Alamena Coffey; friend Ruby Hillier and his buddy Rubert Byre I'm sure was at the gates waiting for him. Eugene was born and raised in Petite Forte, he started fishing at a very young age. After that he started a career with Puddister Trading Co., then he started dating mom. They both came back to Petite Forte to live and were married on September 30th, 1977. He loved the water and it was his life, in August of 78 his daughter came along. Then 5 years later he got his bouncing baby boy. He raised them both with lots of love and no matter what we wanted we got. If mom said no we always went to dad and of course got our own way. Dad had a lot of health issues but that didn't stop him from enjoying life, he loved the woods as much as he loved fishing and then came the flower garden. He had a green thumb he always told everyone his flowers grew beautiful because he sang to them every evening. His most precious gifts and what made him the happiest was when his two grandsons came into the world. They were the sparkle of his eye and his biggest worry. He had a love for everyone and loved to tell stories, sometimes they weren't true. His family was his biggest worry and he loved his fur grandsons, Skipper had to be seen every night through FaceTime before bed. That shocked a lot of people when he got so attached to them. Our hearts will never mend but knowing you're at peace will help us through. Love you forever, until we meet again. In keeping with Eugene's wishes cremation has taken place. Family will be receiving friends from Holy Rosary RC Church on Sunday March 10th, 2024 from 12pm-9pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday March 11th, 2024 11am from Holy Rosary RC Church Petite Forte with inurnment following in RC Cemetery Petite Forte.

Tommy was predeceased by his parents, Michael & Genevive Murphy; sister, Josie Murphy; parents-in-law, Thomas & Priscilla Jones; sisters-in-law, Cindy Murphy, Kimberley Murphy; brother-in-law, Ralph Jones. While Tom left us far too soon, the impact he had on our family and his large circle of friends will be felt for years to come. He passed just as he wanted, in the arms of his beloved wife Theresa and surrounded by all his loved ones. Anyone that knew Tom knows that his "Babe" was his world and he was hers. By his side from the start of his journey, Theresa's support was heroic right until the end. From the day Tom and Theresa expressed their love through starting a family, Tom worked hard and devoted his life to making a living working away. He would always return with a smile on his face and his heart full at the site of Theresa and the boys waiting to greet him. Family meant the world to Tom and he lived by the mantra of family always coming first. The adoration he had for his three boys, Adam, Tyler and Zack was only mirrored when his beautiful grandchildren came into the world. Emma, Addison, Mason and Marlee were the topic of most conversations and he bragged about how proud he was of each and everyone of his grandbabies. His love for his community was clear and it was reciprocated by many. That was truly evident when everyone gathered during his fundraiser event and Tom was so proud that he told everyone he spoke to all about it. Despite spending much time in and out of the hospital, he never lost his sense of humour and his kind soul. Throughout his entire journey, he cracked jokes with his grown children, made all the nurses on his ward smile and crave to be in his presence. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humour will be missed. The Murphy family would like to express a sincere thank you to the nurses and doctors of 5 South B at the Health Sciences Centre for your genuine care and compassion to Tommy during his time of illness. In honouring Tommy's wishes, there will be a private viewing for family and close friends and cremation will follow. The Turpin family would like to offer a special thank you to the nurse practitioners, that took such great care of him, Suzanne Condon and Alisa Fowlow. Ern was the third child of twelve, The "Gentle Giant" of the crew, who was known to many as "Big Ern." From a very tender age he knew what hard work was all about. He spent many days fishing, farming, gardening, cutting, and hauling wood. He was known for his strength, kind heart, and patience. Work was his life until he met his one and only love, Anne-Marie (Anna Mary). Together they built a humble life filled with love, laughter, happiness, and good food. The most treasured part of his life were his four children, along with his six adored grandchildren. Ern found joy in many things especially at the stage mending traps and nets and having a yarn with his brothers and fellow fishermen. Being on the water was a big part of who he was, and the life he made. Despite his sea sickness, it was where he loved to be. In his later years, sitting at the kitchen table, looking out at the harbour and the boats, brought him solace when he could no longer continue to do what he loved dearly. Ern was a man of very few words, and quite funny in his own way. He had many unique expressions, some personally crafted, that no one would dare repeat! There is a lot more that could be said about the great man that Ern was, but in fine "No fuss" Ern fashion, we'll end with his most favourite expression, "That's good enough." The Turpin Family will be accepting visitors at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, St. Lawrence on: Tuesday, March 5th, 1pm - 7pm, Wednesday, March 6th, 10am - 7pm.
