BULLEN, JAMES I.
Here is James I Bullen's obituary. Please accept Echovita's sincere condolences.
It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved James I Bullen (Coral Gables, Florida), who passed away at the age of 81, on March 27, 2022. Family and friends can send flowers and/or light a candle as a loving gesture for their loved one. Leave a sympathy message to the family in the guestbook on this memorial page of James I Bullen to show support. A memorial service was held on Friday, April 1st 2022 at 10:30 AM at the Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel (4600 SW 8th St, Coral Gables, FL 33134).(Commentary by Allan Stoodley)We received the news a few days ago that Jim Bullen, another one of our Grand Bank buddies from our teen-age years, had passed away suddenly in Miami, Florida. It was way back in 1957-58 that Jim and I boarded together on Mullock Street, St. John's: Jim taking a Telecommunications Course at the Trade School and I working at the Evening Telegram newspaper, Following the completion of his course, Jim was hired by ITT and went to work in the country of Panama; some years later he moved to the Dominican Republic where he and Fred White worked together. I corresponded with him recently when he told me that he had continued on with his education and in 2004 had earned a Ph.D degree - in recent years he had been teaching at an American University. Jim was the son of the late Captain John and Jessie Bullen of Grand Bank; he leaves to morn one daughter, Jennifer, and a grandson, Lucyas; two sister, Mary English (Harry) of Grand Bank and Vera Parsons of Shearstown; two brothers, George and John Jr. of Bay Roberts; his wife predeceased him several years ago. Jim's last words to me, in a message on Feb. 25th, was "Hope we do get a chance to see each other in the future" - he was 81 years old on March 23rd............."Rest In Peace buddy"..

MANNING-WALKER, MARION
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Marion Manning-Walker announces her passing. Marion passed away at the Lions Manor Nursing Home in Placentia on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the age of 76. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories full of endless love and dedication is her only child, Tammy Walker (Neil Smith), also her sisters Madeline Manning and Gail Manning, her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and support workers. Marion is predeceased by her husband John Walker, parents Adell and James Manning, sisters Ellen Mary Higgs , Rita O'Brien, Pearl Cummings, Adell Pilon , and brothers Allan Manning, Andrew Manning , Clarence Manning, Leo Manning, and James Manning. For those that really knew her, they knew she was the pillar of her family. She was always there to help, protect, and support. Her time, talent, support and intelligence were poured limitlessly to her daughter, her mother, her brothers, sisters , nieces, nephews and friends. She was always there to help someone who needed some wise advice, support, help with paperwork, or just needed to talk. She enjoyed nothing more than a few smokes, a great chat and a cup of tea while dispelling her wisdom on whatever the topic at hand. She was generous and loving. She was like a nanny to her great grand nieces and nephews (Brad-Nicholas Edwards, Damian Roul, Desire Roul and Taylor Manning). Her patience with children was boundless. She would love to watch them play and would turn her house into a playland to make sure they were having fun and felt loved and special. Marion was also a dedicated, hardworking and loyal employee that would go beyond the expectation of the job. First and foremost, Marion's main role was always that of a dedicated mother. This poem resonates. MY MOTHER My mother is a woman like no other. She gave me life, nurtured me, taught me, dressed me, fought for me, held me, shouted at me, kissed me, but most importantly she loved me unconditionally. There are not enough words to describe just how important my Mother is to me and what a powerful influence she continues to be. Mother, I Love You. The struggle with dementia is a long process of mourning the person you know long before they pass from this earth, as their personality and memories are challenged, and the person you know slowly disappears. Marion is now at peaceful rest reunited with her husband, parents and siblings. Even during failing health over the last number of years, Marion was adamant to be at home in Lawn. Thank you to the various home care workers who made this possible. Special acknowledgement and thank you to Kate Edwards whose support evolved into a true friendship. Thank you to the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre for providing superior medical care in her declining health over the past number of weeks. Since her placement at the Lions Manor Nursing Home in Placentia over two weeks ago, the staff have been nothing short of amazing. Going above and beyond to ensure her final days were spent in comfort and immersed in compassion. In honouring her wishes, cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Lawn on Tuesday, March 29th, 2022 at 10:30am. Inurnment to follow at Holy Name of Jesus R.C. Cemetery. In Marion's memory donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Wiseman's Funeral Homes - Marystown. "Our Family Serving Your Family"

At age 10 Catherine's father gave her a gift that would change the course of her life forever. He surprised her with a piano he had purchased with a load of fish from one of his fishing trips on the Grand Banks. She began to take piano lessons and soon decided she wanted to be a music teacher. She was a gifted musician who also learned to play the violin by ear. Music was something that she would take with her throughout her life, saying that having music in your life was like having a good friend. She graduated from Mount Allision University Sackville, NB with her Music Degree and moved to St. John's, NL to teach at Prince of Wales Collegiate. She loved teaching and she loved the children, and often said that every child taught her something different. Her caring, nurturing personality and passion for music made her the perfect music teacher whom many children fondly remember to this day. It was during this time that she met the love of her life - Harry. He was in the Navy and after a brief courtship, he left to go to Sea and they didn't speak or see each other for a full year. When he arrived home they married on June 9, 1954 on Harry's birthday. Shortly after that time Harry was transferred to England and Catherine found herself living "overseas", a time in her life that she thoroughly enjoyed. They then moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where sons Peter and Robert were born, and although Catherine was enjoying being a Mom, she also began to get in to the real estate business by purchasing distressed properties, renovating them and then selling them, something she was quite good at. When Harry was then transferred to Washington DC, their son John was born, and soon the Mother of 3 boys was busy entertaining and hosting parties with military dignitaries and guests. The next destination was back to their beloved province of Newfoundland, moving to Gander where Harry & Catherine purchased the Albatross Motel. Once again Catherine proved herself as a successful business woman as she helped transform the Albatross into a thriving hotel. Catherine was well respected by staff and patrons, and always treated people with kindness and fairness. Catherine had a true gift for making everyone around her feel special, welcome and listened to. She was an extremely thoughtful person who did so much to help people, all the while quietly staying in the background. But she was a strong, determined, ambitious woman who was a fighter to the very end. She loved spending time with her "Kaegudeck Travellers" friend group whom she travelled all over the globe with, but found their most special trip right here in NL. She treasured visits with her family, and she always made time for a good chat with those she loved and those whom she had just met. She was a smart dresser who had a true eye for fashion. During the last few years at Kenny's Pond she often shared stories, jokes and spread a lot of joy to residents and staff through her piano playing. Her compassion for all those who met her along her life's journey will never be forgotten. She was the epitome of grace and the embodiment of goodness. She truly was a great woman who left a beautiful mark on this world. Special thanks are extended to the many people who provided care and friendship over the past four years while she was a resident at Kenny's Pond Retirement Community. Services to honour the life of Catherine Steele to be held at a later date.
