Burin Peninsula Obituaries
July 2020

The area includes from Terrenceville on down to Grand Bank, over to Lamaline, St. Lawrence, Burin, Marystown and down the Peninsula again to Boat Harbour. All the communities are not named but serves the whole of the Peninsula.

 

BAKER, BERTHA "HAZEL"
Passed peacefully away at the Marystown Retirement Home in Marystown, NL, on Friday, July 31, 2020, BERTHA "HAZEL" BAKER, of Epworth, NL, in her 104th year. Leaving to mourn a number of special nieces and nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends. She also leaves to mourn her friends and the staff of the Marystown Retirement Home in Marystown who were like her family for the past 13 years. Hazel is predeceased by her parents Samuel and Margaret Reid, husband George Baker, husband Willis Clarke, and special niece Doreen Hooper. Cremation will take place. Due to the current public health advisory of COVID - 19, a private funeral service by invitation only will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home, Creston South at 1 PM on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Inurnment will follow at the United Church Cemetery in Epworth, NL. No flowers by request of the family. Donations in Hazel's memory may be made to the Epworth United Church Cemetery Fund.

BROWN, DIANA
It is with great sadness the family of Diana Brown of Burin Bay Arm age 43 years announces her passing at Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on July 27, 2020. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her partner Eric Lundrigan of Burin; son Joseph Brown of Burin, daughter Shyanne Brown of Burin; parents John & Brenda Brown of Mortier, siblings John Brown (Rosalind) of Mortier,Margaret Fitzpatrick (Isaac) of Mortier, Robert Brown (Shelly) of Burin; nieces & nephews Jeremy, Jamie, Rory, Thomas, Daniel, Meagan, Morgan; great nieces & nephews Aliya, Hunter, Shae, Cooper, Quinn plus a large circle of other family and friends. Predeceased by baby brother, great niece Harper Rose. In Keeping with Diana wishes cremation has taken place. CROWLEY, BLANCHE
It is with great sadness that the family of the late BLANCHE CROWLEY of Grand Bank announces her passing at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre in Burin on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at the age of 89. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are her son, Gary Crowley (Juliette) of Fortune; grandchildren, Travis (June) and Erika (Adam); great-grandson, Liam Crowley; sister, Rose Green of Grand Bank; sister-in-law, Margaret Hickman of Fortune; special niece, Judy Foote (Howard) who she loved as a daughter; caregivers, Ella Simms and Tina Billard; plus a large circle of relatives and friends. Blanche is predeceased by her husband, Carl Crowley; parents, Thomas & Sarah Hickman; parents-in-law, Herbert & Mary Crowley; sisters, Delsie Grandy (James), Martha Petrie (Frank), Mary Healey (Victor), and Jean Buffett (Hubert); brothers, John Hickman, and Garfield Hickman (Florence); brothers-in-law, Caleb Green, Gordon Crowley, Lyman Crowley, and Wilson Crowley; sisters-in-law, Alice Stewart, Margaret Gold, and Jean Billings. DAY, BERNADETTE
Passed peacefully away at the Marystown retirement Centre In Newfoundland on July 1, 2020, Bernadette Day at the age of 79 years. Leaving to morn her daughters Deanna (Steve) Luckasavitch, Sherry (John) McAstocker of Ontario, Sons, Dennis (Amor) and Glen Day from Toronto. She had left behind several grandchildren, Autumn and Kaelem, Stephanie, Krissy and Graham, Brother Tom Corcoran, Special nephew Shawn Corcoran and Niece Stephanie Cooper, Stephen, Denise, Frank Corcoran, sister in law Jackie, Special friends Stella, Madonna (cousin), Darryl and her loving roommate and friend Dorothy who never left her side. Pedeceased by her parents Theresa and Thomas of Mortier, Sisters: Rita, Margaret, Marion, brothers Jim, and Sim of Burin Nfld. Special thanks to Marystown Retirement Home. The girls, Lisa, Nicole, Katie, Shirley, and Heather and Linda. I am sure there are many more specials ones too. They stood by our mothers side the whole time. DOWNEY, ARTHUR
Passed away suddenly on 16 July 2020, at the age of 74, Arthur Downey (born 28 July 1945). Arthur was a proud, life-long resident of Grand Bank. He started his work life at 15 working at the fish plant and spent more than 40 years on deep sea fishing trawlers sailing out of various ports in Newfoundland. He was an avid member of his church and was enrolled as a senior soldier since 1998. He served the Salvation Army as an usher, member of the men's fellowship and he often collected for the Christmas Kettle. He attended summer church camp and enjoyed the comraderie developed with his friends in Christ. Arthur loved his family. He was eagerly awaiting the birth of his newest Great Grandchild. He was recognized in the community as a gentle and kind man and was known for his love of cars and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Smith Downey; son Rick (Selina), son Fred, Daughter Jackie (Alan) Grandchildren Chris (Rosemary), Amanda (Brian), Renee, Dylan, Layne and Samantha (Jon). Great Grandchildren: Jade and Naomi Siblings: Mary, May (Ralph), Sally, Marina (Harry), Belinda (Joe), Lloyd (Rosalind), Wayne (Ruby) Predeceased by his parents Minnie and Phillip, Sisters Jessie and Florence and Brother Freddie. Following government legislation due to the current pandemic, a private visitation will take place at Serenity Funeral Home, Grand Bank Saturday Visitation 7-9, Family will be receiving visitors in groups of 5. followed by a private funeral service from Salvation Army Citadel , Grand Bank with interment following at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Grand Bank. As an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory may be made to Burin SPCA or Salvation Army Cemetery Grand Bank. FEWER, JOHN F.
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late JOHN F. FEWER of Marystown announces his passing. John passed away at his home in Marystown on Tuesday, July 28th, 2020, at the age of 76. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Cora Fewer of 50 years; daughter, Mary-Jo Fewer of Marystown; 1 grandson, Jackson, his pride and joy; brothers, Alfred Fewer (Barbara) of St. Bernard's, and Gerard Fewer (Goldie) of Marystown; sister-in-law, Mary Fewer of Bay d'Espoir; plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Solange Fewer; sister, Cassie Kelly; brothers, Paul and Christopher. As per John's wishes, cremation will take place. FOOTE, NORMAN ALBERT
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late NORMAN ALBERT FOOTE of Fortune announces his passing. Norman passed away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Center in Burin on Friday, July 31st, 2020 at the age of 70. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Geraldine of 50 years; sons, Chris Foote (Denica) of Grand Bank, and Tyson Foote (Traci) of Mt. Pearl; daughter, Heather Foote of Clarenville; his mother, Lucy Foote Murcell; 5 grandchildren, Abigail, Zoey, Anah, Hayden, and Kinley; brothers, Freeman Foote (Mary), Howard Foote (Judy), and Gilbert Foote; sisters, Meta Clarke (Charles), Phyllis Penney (Aubrey), and Elaine Moulton (Murray); brothers-in-law, Harvey Follett (Phyllis), Hubert Follett (Pearl), Ross Follett (Betty), and Carl Follett (Arlene); Home Care Worker, Angela Herridge; plus a large circle of extended family and friends. Norman was predeceased by his father, Norman Foote Sr., daughter, Baby Girl Foote; and parents-in-law, Aubrey and Emma Follett. It is with great sadness that the family of the late NORBERT STRANG of Lawn announces his passing at the U.S. Memorial Health Centre in St. Lawrence on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at the age of 84. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Aundrietta of 64 years; sons, Norbert Strang (Sarah Kelly) of Sussex, NB, Vaughn Strang (Josephine Escalona) of Tumbler Ridge, BC, Richard Strang (Shallon Edwards) of Lawn, NL, and Wayne Strang (Wanda Drake) of Ajax, ON; daughters, Margaret Barry (Gerald) of Dartmouth, NS, Janeth Barker (Mike) of Tumbler Ridge, BC, Adell Strang (Russell) of Tumbler Ridge, BC, and Michelle Walsh (Trevor) of Paradise, NL; 34 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Iris Martin (Roland) of Ste. Anne de Madawaska; brother, Raymond Strang (Agnes) of Lawn; sisters-in-law, Cela Loder of St. Lawrence, Beth Bishop of St. Lawrence, Julia Loder of Montreal, and Marian Jean Loder of Halifax, NS; brothers-in-law, Jim Loder (Lisa) of St. Lawrence, Leo Loder (Geraldine) of St. Lawrence, and Jack Loder (Toni) of Houston, BC; many nieces and nephews; plus a large circle of relatives and friends. Norbert is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Adell Strang; daughter, Aundrietta; parents-in-law, Leo & Lillian Loder and Pauline & Richard Loder (Nan & Diddy); and brothers and sisters-in-law, Pauline, Richard (Bud), Leone, Ted, Ena and Dan. The Strang Family will accept visitors at Wiseman's Funeral Homes in Burin. In order to maintain social distancing and to follow the public health advisory of COVID 19, a walk through visitation will take place on Thursday, July 16 th , 2020 from 7pm - 9pm. A maximum of 20 people at any one time permitted. A private funeral service will be held at Wiseman's Funeral Homes in Burin on Friday, July 17 th , 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lawn. In Norbert's memory, in-lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. The Strang Family would like to thank the amazing staff at the St. Lawrence Long Term Care Facility for providing such compassionate care and kindness and our home care workers over the last three years, especially Raelene Strang.
