His tireless work ethic and commitment led him to a well-deserved retirement in 1998. Post-retirement, Doug embraced a life filled with purpose and joy. He thrived on visiting his children and tackling various maintenance projects, earning him the title of the family's jack of all trades. A devoted family man, Doug found solace in the company of his loved ones, creating cherished memories during trips to Florida and visits to Alberta. A man of many talents, Doug found immense joy in singing, cutting wood and camping. Sharing moments over his favourite indulgence - a Crown Royal and Diet Coke - was a special treat for those fortunate enough. From the lumber woods of Churchill Falls to the shipyard in Marystown, he worked hard to provide for his family. His love of music, especially the guitar and accordion always lit up the kitchen on Saturday afternoons. From Spanish Angels to Storms Never Last, new words were made up and everyone joined in. He never shied away from hard work and commitment to his family. He loved to spend days in his shed working on a boat when it was too poor to fish. He would say, "now if you are going with me get in the car" and then he would go wait in the car for Loretta to get ready. Levi was born on October 7, 1943, and was raised in Jersey Room, Bull's Cove, Newfoundland. In 1966, at the age of 19 years old, he went to work with Fishery Products International (FPI) in Burin. Luck struck in 1964 when he met the love of his life, Shela Mayo, whom he married on February 18, 1966. Following the marriage that year the couple welcomed their first born, their beautiful and only daugther, Christine. Shortly following her birth they moved to Labrador City where Levi took a job at the Iron Ore Company (IOC). While in Labrador the small family began to grow as they welcomed the addition of three strapping sons, first Albert, then Ivan, and lastly, Donnie. In the summer of 1978 the young and busy family decided to return home to Burin, where Levi took a job as a Welder back at his old stomping grounds, FPI. After 10 years of welding, Levi decided to take an early retirement and began driving a school bus, which he then did for 14 years. With their 4 children grown up and having families of their own, he retired again in 2011 so that he and Shela could move to Ontario to help take care of their 3 youngest grandchildren; this was until 2019, when the couple moved back to their beautiful home of Newfoundland.
Throughout Levi's joyous life, he gave his heart and soul to not only his family, but also his community. He established the local Sea Cadet Corps, RCSCC 280 Zaandam, and worked with the program for 25 years. Back in 1985, he began working with the Royal Canadian Legion, and served a total of 14 years as president at Branch 29 in Burin, and Branch 532 in New Hamburg, Ontario. Throughout the years he also served on the Poppy Trust and was a part of the Legion's executive committee. Levi was a man who was loved and respected by all of those who had the honour of meeting him. He was someone who would do anything he could, for anyone who asked. His big heart and even bigger smile will be dearly missed. "It isn't what we leave behind, it's what we leave in people's hearts that counts." Marie passed peacefully away in the presence of her loving daughters at the U.S. Memorial Health Centre in St. Lawrence on Monday, January 1st, 2024, at the age of 82. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are her husband, Donald of 65 years; daughters, Donna Cluett (Les) of Frenchman's Cove and Susan Dodge (Fred) of Garnish; grandchildren, Leslie Cluett (Tonia) of Frenchman's Cove, Jeremy Cluett (Tara) of Ontario; and Heidi Dodge (Ian) of Torbay; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Ashlyn Cluett of Ontario; sister-in-law, Mae Myles of Grand Bank; plus a large circle of family & friends.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, Ernest & Elsie Myles; brother, Leonard Myles; and parents-in-law, William & Maude Marsh. Special thank you to the staff of the protective care unit at U.S. Memorial Health Centre for the exceptional care given to Marie during her stay and the compassion shown to the family in her final days will never be forgotten. Marie was a kind, gentle lady, loved by all who met her. Generous to a fault, particularly with her time.
A selfless volunteer, she gave freely of herself to her community through various organizations such as the Garnish Library Board, ACW, Heritage Society, Bakeapple Festival, Burin Peninsula Health Care Auxiliary, Jamieson Academy Breakfast Program plus numerous other events….basically, if it need doing, Marie was there. Family was everything to Marie; in fact her biggest and brightest smiles came from spending time with her Daughters, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Marie Loved the outdoors, whether it was a cup of tea by the side of a pond, helping Don cut a few sticks of birch or just a long walk in the fresh air. But berry picking is where she really shined. She could go for hours on end, returning home at or near dusk, laden down with whatever was in season…Don in the window just shaking his head. Marie was also known to play the odd game of darts. Actually that's a bit of an understatement…she LOVED her darts, particularly her Wednesday night Ladies League, but also competed in southern Division Top Ten. Marie worked for The Hudson Bay Company until her retirement as Receiving Manager at Zellers. The Marsh Family will be accepting visitors at St. Giles Anglican Church, Garnish on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2pm - 4pm, 7pm - 9pm. Thursday January 4th, 10am - 12noon, 2pm - 4pm, 7pm -9pm.

SHEPPARD, CHARLENE CLAIRE
Born in Grand Bank. It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Charlene Claire Sheppard announce her sudden passing on January 3, 2024 at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 74, with her loving family by her side. Charlene lived a life devoted to the caring of her family and friends. She was a mother to many, including caring for her special Nan, as Nan had done for her and her siblings when they lost their parents at a young age. She was also deeply connected to her sister, Eileen. Charlene's door was always open, and her table ready for a crowd. You could always tell who was coming for dinner by the menu, as she catalogued everyone's favourite meals. From Christmas mornings filled with family and friends, to being a home-away from home for many young family members as they pursued education, her easy and steady presence nurtured many. Her phone rarely was silent, as extended family and family friends never went long without calling to share the important and the mundane, to celebrate success and to share their burdens and worries. More than just a matriarch of a close family, she was our home. Never wanting to be the centre of attention, she remained the centre of our worlds. A teacher, Charlene believed that education was a pathway to freedom. She valued information and knowledge and was an invaluable resource for sound and compassionate advice. Few documents were written by members of her larger family without her editing and input. It is with genuine fear that we write this today without her proofreading. Charlene was also quick with a laugh and had a sense of humour appreciated by young and old. Children and animals gravitated to her presence, and her favourite role was that of grandmother to Michael, Sam, Alex and James. "Her boys" were blessed to have such a caring, warm, and devoted grandmother. Charlene leaves to mourn with fond and precious memories her children, Heather Sheppard (Mike Reader) and Bill Sheppard (Stephanie); her beloved grandchildren Michael, Sam, Alex and James; siblings Fred Follett, Roy Follett, Eileen Follett and Wayne Follett; sisters-in-law Ambrosene Follett, Debbie Watts and Debbie Follett and a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by many important family members and friends, particularly her parents Mary Belbin and Clarence Follett, her extraordinary grandmother Clara Belbin, and brother Keith Follett. The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre for the compassion extended to her family and the dignity extended to our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. In keeping with Charlene's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving family and friends on Monday, January 8th (2-4 pm; 7-9 pm) and Tuesday, January 9th (12-2 pm) at Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. Funeral to be held Tuesday, January 9th at 2 pm, at Barrett's Funeral Home, Mount Pearl; internment to follow at Memorial Gardens, Mount Pearl. For those unable to attend the service it will be live streamed please visit www.barretts.ca and follow the link provided.
