BARTER, GERALD
It is with deep sadness that the family of the late Gerald Barter of Creston South announces his passing at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on Friday, January 21, 2022 at the age of 81. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Melida of 56 years; son, Paul Barter (Michelle) of Port Aux Basques; daughter, Nadine Barter of Paradise; 3 beautiful grandchildren, Brie Cousins, Reid Cousins and Mason Barter; brothers, Clyde Barter (Elizabeth) of Creston South, Roy Barter (Ann) of Creston South, Roland Barter (Ruth) of Winterland, and Alvin Barter (Sharon Sinnott) of Port Kirwan; brother-in-law, David McNeil of Creston South; plus a large circle of family and friends. Gerald was predeceased by his baby girl, Paula Barter; parents, James & Susanna Barter; sister, Cynthia McNeil; parents-in-law, James & Gladys Durnford; and brothers-in-law, Calvin and Samuel Durnford.
Gerald was born in Burgeo, Newfoundland on July 11, 1940, to James and Susanna Barter. He later moved to Cape La Hune and eventually to Creston South in 1948 where he completed High School at St. Michael's. Upon completion of High school, he spent two years teaching in the communities of Burin and Isle aux Morts. He then furthered his education by attending Memorial University where he studied Theology. While attending university he worked as a student at Fishery Products in Burin and as a Catechest in Leading Tickles. Following a brief period working in the construction industry, he started his formal career as an Accountant at the Marystown Shipyard in 1967 and remained there until he retired. Gerald was a very hard-working individual who was extremely committed to his career. He married Melida Dunford of Francois Newfoundland in 1965 and was blessed with 56 years of marriage and three beautiful children, Paula (died in infancy), Paul and Nadine. Their lives were enriched raising Paul and Nadine who were clearly their Pride and Joy. They were then further fulfilled with the birth of three grandchildren, Brie, Reid, and Mason who they absolutely adored. Gerald did not only dedicate his life to his family and career, but he also had an active leadership presence in the Anglican Church. He was an organist for more than 60 years, a lay reader, and a devoted member of the church choir. As well, in the 1980's and 1990's he was a prominent volunteer with the Primate World Relief Development fund on a Provincial, National, and International level. His volunteer work extended into the community with his role as a hockey coach and executive member of the Marystown Minor Hockey Association. His love of hockey was definitely notable as was his pride of being a hockey Dad and hockey Grandad.
In his retirement years, he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and chatting over coffee with his friends. He also loved playing the organ, reading, relaxing in the outdoors, travelling, and napping. Every night, he watched Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and the National news. He appreciated a glass of "German" white wine and frequently indulged soft serve vanilla ice cream and milk. Gerald never took time for granted and often reflected on how blessed his life had been. Gerald left a great mark on the world with his never-ending smile and his kind and gentle nature.

COLLINS, JOHN
I'se The B'y that sails her"
On January 24, 2022, John Collins passed away peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital at the age of 86. Born in Lamaline, Newfoundland and Labrador, he was the seventh of fourteen children of Michael and Bridget Collins. John was predeceased in 2018 by the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Rena Mae. He is survived by his cherished children: Peggi (Tom), Kathy, Linda (Rui), and Sean; ten grandchildren: Chris (Gillian), Dan (Margot), Matthew (Laurel), Michele (CK), Joseph, Aria (Steve), Kai (Emily), Koji, Jonah and Elliot, and seven great grandchildren: Simon, Jeremy, Natalie, Mary, Harvey, James, and Teo.Jack (as he was known by his family) was predeceased by siblings Mary, Tom, Andrew, Carmel, Mike, Bill, Peter, Bernie, Joan, and Marjorie. He is survived by sister Elizabeth and brothers Max and Paul.
Growing up in Lamaline provided a foundation for an enduring love of Newfoundland. John would regale any who would listen of childhood memories of rowing the family to church in a dory, accompanying his fiddle-playing father on his accordion at many Saturday night affairs along the Burin Peninsula, the annual capelin roll, lobster, fishing, and swimming in the pristine waters of Piercy's Brook. John left his job as the manager of the Co-op in Point May (and a side-hustle as a bootlegger) and moved to Edmonton in 1954, he was among the first generation of Newfoundlanders that made the move out west, a pioneer of sorts. A self-made man, his first jobs included delivering milk by horse and carriage and working as a journeyman welder on the Trans Mountain Pipeline. After completing his time with the pipeline, John returned to Edmonton and worked for a brief spell before breaking out on his own, initially fabricating ornamental railings in a small welding shop and selling them door to door. That enterprise grew, joist by joist, and ultimately became Collins Steel Products, which, at the time of its sale to Consolidated New Pacific in the early 1970's, was one of Edmonton's then most successful steel fabrication and erection enterprises, having a work force of over 200 that left its mark on Edmonton's skyline and industrial areas. Many prominent steel fabrication businessmen began their careers with Collins Steel. Following the sale, John remained with the company for a while before moving on to new things including continuing in business with his brother Mike in a successful land development company. Mike and John complemented each other perfectly in their many business ventures. More importantly, they and their families were and remain the best of friends. John was the embodiment of working to live and he eschewed many business opportunities in favour of enjoying and living life to the fullest which involved spending time with Rena Mae, their children, relatives near and far and forging deep and enduring friendships. Friends will recall annual sailing, hunting and fishing trips where John would often bring along his concertina accordion and play jigs into the early morning. Much time was spent at the family cabin on Pigeon Lake, respite from the harsh Alberta winters was found in Maui, and later in Mexico. Scarcely a year passed without an extended annual pilgrimage to his sacred homeland of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nothing was more important to John than family. Despite not being the eldest, John was the patriarch of his family. He was a constant mentor and companion to his brothers, sisters and their children. John and Rena Mae met on a sunny Sunday night in Edmonton having been invited to Rena Mae's rooming house at her aunt Martha's to watch Ed Sullivan. Their relationship flourished quickly and they were wed shortly thereafter. They moved to St Albert in 1963, were active and respected members of the community and made many life-long friends along the way. Their family grew with the arrival of three daughters and a son. John was a loving and generous father. Poppa, as he is known to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, occupied a special and unique place in each and every one of their lives; most of whom spent long summers at the lake learning to sail, waterski and swim with their Poppa on many a splendid and endless summer day. John was a principled man; a man of faith whose word was his bond. Our loss is indescribable but John's legacy and Spirit lives on in his family and friends. A Private Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the St. Albert Catholic Parish. Interment to follow at the Holy Cross Mausoleum. Extended family and friends who are unable to join in person at the Funeral Mass due to capacity restrictions, are welcome to attend and view the live stream at St. Albert Inn (#156 St.Albert Trail) including a reception. St. Albert Inn is participating in the Restriction Exemption Program. A valid QR Code Proof of Vaccination or a negative COVID 19 test within 72 hours and Photo Identification are required to gain entry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

CREWS, Delores "Lori" Crews (nee Haley)
Born on Allen's Island, NL, on September 10, 1953. She passed peacefully away on January 16, 2022, in St. John's at the age of 68. Lori's love of children led her to a career in education. After completing two years of teacher training at Littledale College, St. John's, she began her career teaching in a three-room school in Lamaline. Her final position was a provincial consultant with the Department of Education. While working full time and parenting two children she earned four academic degrees: a B.A.(Ed) and a B.S.Ed. from Memorial University, a M.Ed. (Learning Disabilities) from St. Michael's College in Vermont, and a M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) from the University of New Hampshire. During her career she taught regular and special classes as well as working as a school guidance counsellor. Lori was employed at the Burin Peninsula School District office for several years providing leadership to teachers and students in gifted education. During her tenure at the Department of Education she travelled throughout the province providing support in the area of autism for teachers and parents. She was always eager to be a mentor to young and aspiring educators. Lori loved reading and writing herself and also teaching in this area. At the school level she was instrumental in introducing programs such as Reading Buddies and establishing a Reading Room. While at the Department of Education, she coauthored several policy manuals in the areas of special education and reading. The last children's book she wrote was a personal one for her grandchild in which she was poking fun of Frank being chased by a moose. In addition to her career as an educator she was a news broadcaster at CJOX in Grand Bank and also worked as an immigration officer for a period of time. Her love for children she influenced as an educator was eclipsed only by the love she had for family, Frank, her husband for 48 years, and her children Rhonda and Joanne. She was the most amazing nana to her grandchildren and they were the benefactors of her unconditional love. Lori loved music, dancing, live performances, travelling, chocolate, cheesecake and her dogs. She loved so many things and always lived life to the fullest. She had a keen sense of humour and had a quick wit. She liked to play practical jokes on family and acquaintances alike, especially her sons-in-law, David and Marc. She was a very kind and generous person. She was always there to help someone that she thought needed a hand up. She never passed a needy person on the street that she didn't help. After giving them a donation or coffee she would shake their hand. She would always say that everyone needs a human touch. In keeping with her love of reading her family is establishing a 'Lori Crews Memorial Award in Reading' at John Burke High School in her hometown of Grand Bank, NL. Donations to this award will be graciously accepted. You may also wish to remember Lori by an act of kindness to someone who needs your love. Her family was very proud of all her accomplishments; but they will miss her daily as a wonderful mom, nana, and wife. Lori was predeceased by her parents Jack and Bridget Haley, sister-in-law, Emily Haley, parents-in-law, Thomas and Nellie Crews, and brothers-in-law Gilbert Cake and George Crews (Stella). Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Millie of 53 years; sons Scott (Tracey) of Garnish and Ernie (Kelsey) of Garnish; daughters Kim (John Baker) of Grand Bank, Tina(Albert Dober) of Marystown and Tammy (Owen Power) of Garnish; grandchildren Gordie, Amanda, Laura, Jennifer, Alicia and Kelly; great-grandson Ernie; siblings Hazel Savoury (Clyde), Boyd Grandy (Yvonne), Clyde Grandy (Linda), Tom Grandy (Alice), Edith Marshall (Rick) and Roland Grandy (Carrie); brothers-in-law Bert Grandy (Kay) and Rick Grandy (Karen) plus a large circle of nephews, nieces and other family and friends. Predeceased by his parents Charles and Bella Grandy. In keeping with Ernest's wishes cremation has taken place. The Story of my Garnish Grandfather, The Fisherman told by his granddaughter Kelly. My grandfather, Ernest Grandy was born in 1947 in Garnish, NL to Charles and Bella Grandy. He was 11 years old when he started fishing with his father. He fished for 50 yrs. He gave up fishing when he was 61 years old because of health reasons. He grew up in a three-storey house that belonged to his grandparents. One side of the attic was used for a bedroom and the other side was used to store vegetables and do net repairs. My grandfather had seven brothers and sisters. The house had only three bedrooms, the house had a kitchen, parlour, bathroom and pantry. When he was sixteen he moved to a new home where they had running water. Fishing ran in my grandfather's family, the kids were forced to fish to help support the family, while still going to school. All the family was involved with the sea. Whether it was on boats or the fish plant when my grandfather started fishing, he fished for lobster, salmon, and cod in a rowboat and was salted and sold for salt bulk once a year. A can of lobster was sold for $ 0.17 cents. At 15 years old, my grandfather went on a dragger called the Cape Ballard, owned by the Bonavista Cold Storage, they fished for cod, flounder and red fish. On the 2nd trip the boat caught fire in the engine room and all the crew got off in dories. Then some of the crew went back aboard and put tarps over her side and two men tried contacting the Penny Luck for help. They then contacted the Fortune Star, who came and towed the boat & took the men safety to port.
After this, my grandfather worked in the Grand Bank fishplant on the trimming line for 10 months. At 16, he quit and went to work with JB Foote & Sons on the Ambrose Foote which ran flour from South Sydney and all round NL. What was left was taken off port in Bay Bulls and carried to St. John's. In the fall of the year they delivered two trips worth of coal to Sydney, Grand Bank and Garnish. The Boat was tied up in January, and my grandfather then went out on a dragger in February. They fished for cod, yellow tails and red fish. This was the year that the Blue Mist went down, and the dragger went to search for any survivors. They picked up some wreckage from the Blue Mist. After a year, my grandfather then fished off the Grand Banks on an FPI dragger, he fished on Altantic Marie in Marystown. After that, he went inshore fishing with his brother, they fished out of a motor dory. The gear they used was for lobster pots, trawls, gill nets and jiggers, they delivered their catch to Grand Bank. They then fished in a 21 ft flat, with a 35hp motor which cost $700.00 in the late 70's and early 80's, a hydraulic hauler was used to make fishing easier. In 1982, my grandmother Millie joined my grandfather fishing. In 1989 they got their fist fiberglass boat which was 22 ft long and had 2 35 horsepower motors. At this time they sold lobster for $1.00 a pound. During the off-season, my grandfather would try to get on a dragger. After that my great-grandfather gave my grandfather his boat to go fishing as his own. He fished on his own boat until 2008. While fishing, my grandfather and the other men would wear many layers of clothes to keep warm. Today they wear rubber gloves but years ago they wore wool mitts. On cold nights he wore as many as 7 jackets to keep warm. An old gentlemen used to pass my grandfather hot milk through a porthole so that he could try and keep warm. For many years the income wasn't great, there was no extra money and the family was just meeting the basic needs of everyday life. Some years the catch was good but the prices were low, and other years the catch was low. Going out fishing meant my grandfather had to be away from his wife and children for long periods of time, especially went he went out on the draggers. When he fished inshore, there was not much time for anything, he had to get up at 4am and work until 7or 8pm. During the weekends and summers, he would take the kids to the cabin on the shore where they would go trouting, berry picking and bring in the wood and play. Two of his children followed in his footsteps and took to the seas. Even today my family keeps up the fishing tradition. My brother now fished with our family, keeping the tradition alive in our family. Fishing wasn't a job to Ernest it was his life. He enjoyed time spent at his cabin with his family and friends. He loved to go on his skidoo, anything to do with the outdoors he loved. Whatever he done from fishing to going to the cabin he always wanted his grandchildren and children involved. His family was his everything. "He may be gone from this world but our memories will be here forever." Due to Covid regulations a private family service will take place at Salvation Army Citadel, Garnish on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 2PM. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army Cemetery Fund, Garnish. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Burin. "We listen. We learn. We walk with you."

LAKE, Bonny Lynn
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing at her home, surrounded by her loving family, of Bonny Lynn Lake, on Monday, January 17, 2022, age 54 years. Predeceased by her father, Harry Lake (1994); and grandparents: Myril & Margaret King and Byron & Grace Lake. Leaving to mourn with cherished memories, her mother, Marion Lake; brother, Danny (Sandra); nephew, Nicholas (Michella), and niece, Katherine; her life-long sister-friend, Darlene (Ken) Noseworthy-Abbott; her aunts, uncles, and cousins - too numerous to mention but all so special; as well as a large circle of friends - including her Saturday night card club and her RCMP family. A beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Bonny's friends and family were her everything. She loved her niece and nephew as her own and was so supportive of them. Her smile was infectious, her kindness unwavering and she faced any challenge life threw at her with strength and courage. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and love her. Bonny came into this world on April 11th, 1967 and was from Fortune, NL. Whether it was on the walking trails with her friends, adventures with Katherine, shopping, traveling the world, or at work with her RCMP family, Bonny always had energy and time to give to others. She always cherished her time spent with family and her many friends. Bonny was motivated, and guided, by her big heart and her love for family and friends. There was nothing she would not do for either. Every single person touched by Bonny's love and friendship will attest to this. Bonny was very much an "on the go" person. She was an extra-ordinary co-worker, one of a kind person. She truly loved being involved with the RCMP organization, and their activities. Over the years, Bonny was an active volunteer and organizer of many events, and she was their bartender for many years during any RCMP special events. Her beautiful smile, friendly personality and confidence was infectious, and anyone who had the privilege of meeting her, you immediately knew you had a forever friend. This extraordinary woman was a pillar of strength for everyone in her circle. Bonny was very loved by her family, she was generous, and the best supporter for them all. Bonny enjoyed her quiet nights at home hanging out with her Mom Marion, brother Danny, sister-in-law Sandra, and special niece and nephew, Katherine and Nicholas, as much as she enjoyed socializing. Bonny's close friends were everything to her, and she loved and respected them all. She was the best listener, and you always knew if you shared anything personal with Bonny, it would go no further. She was a wonderful confidant. Bonny was our "social butterfly". Whether it was shopping, playing cards, dining out at bars or restaurants, walking on our beautiful trails, attending concerts, hanging out on a beach in another country with friends, all of these things made Bonny the happiest, and she made friends everywhere she traveled. We always joked and often said, "look at her again now", because she'd talk to everyone. It is for all of these reasons and fun times, that it makes saying goodbye to Bonny so difficult - Until we meet again dear friend, you were loved immensely and will be missed by so many. We can say with certainty that Bonny is finally at peace, and for this we are grateful. Our family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Centre. We would like to especially thank Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Greenland, and Dr. Scott Edwards - your guidance, support, compassion, and care for Bonny will never be forgotten. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Caul's Funeral Home. Visitation and funeral to take place in Fortune at a date to be announced. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers, a donation in Bonny's memory to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation would be greatly appreciated, or you may forward to the family for them to donate to the Foundation in her memory. Harvey was born November 14, 1936, on Fogo Island, he worked there for 22 years in the lumber woods and relocated to Burin 45 years ago where he and his beloved wife made a great life for themselves. Harvey worked at the fish plant in Burin and Grace at the hospital. He loved anything to do with the outdoors from fishing to hunting. He was an active member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Shriner's. He could always be counted on to give a helping hand. He was a great dad and grandfather. His joy was in the children, he loved for them to visit, and they loved him dearly. His granddaughter wrote this tribute for him that explains how all the kids will miss him dearly.
"I knew so little that evening, that God would call your name.
In life I loved you dearly Pop, in death I will do the same.
It breaks my heart to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of me was with you, the day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories; your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one, our chains will link again."
Rest in Peace Pop.... Until We Meet again for some fish and brews and LOTS of onions.
Loves Ya
