SPEARNS Sr., JEROME
Sadly, Jerome Spearns, Sr., 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the US Memorial Health Care Centre in St. Lawrence, NL, with some family members by his side.
He was born on July 25, 1930 to Robert and Martha Spearns in St. Lawrence, NL. After his father's death, he spent his formative years with his mother in St. Bernard's, NL.
In 1948 he met the love of his life, Mildred Lundrigan, and they married soon after. They were together through the good and bad times, "real life" stuff for over 65 years. She predeceased him almost 5 years ago.
They built a house in Little St. Lawrence and raised 13 children there. Jerome worked at various jobs over the years, fishing, mining, Quality Control Officer in the local fish plant and other work, to support his wife and children.
He worked in the fluorspar mines in St. Lawrence for 27 years, until the mines shut down in 1978. He was passionate about mining and he told many's a tale about his mining experiences - the teamwork required to keep each other safe and to achieve their goals for each shift, despite the lack of modern equipment, even for those days. The fellas he worked with were all buddies, looking out for each other on the job, sharing their lunch breaks with work and family tales, playing cards and telling jokes - just great camaraderie amongst a great group of men, working at a tough and gritty job. He loved mining and his mining companions. Sadly, many of his buddies predeceased him years ago. He was one of the oldest miners still alive in St. Lawrence.
Jerome was a 'people' person. He was very social and he volunteered in various ways to fulfill this side of himself. He was a Lions Club member for over 40 years. He was very faithful in his visits to friends at the Manor in St. Lawrence. He was kind and friendly to everyone, friend or stranger. Many of us lived far from 'home' and we didn't even know about most of his kind deeds, but people always say how kind he was!
He was proud of all his children and loved everyone for who they were as individuals and as a family. He encouraged each one to follow their heads and hearts on their own life's journey.
He left a legacy of love of the outdoors, being 'on the hills', to his children and grandchildren alike. Hunting moose, snaring rabbits, hunting birds, berry picking, and just going to a pond for a 'boil up' were simple pleasures that meant the world to him. He loved to take his dory out to and often times took the family to Castle Hyde for a picnic and boil up.
Jerome's favourite expression when he was VERY upset was 'Lord dyin jumpin'. He never used regular cuss words!
He loved it when his grandchildren wanted to go exploring the outdoors with him, catching frogs, picking bakeapples, trouting, etc. Many great childhood memories of Poppy (the endearment for grandfather in NL) will live on through his grandchildren!
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are:
Evelina Dunlap, Halifax, NS; Martha Lucas (Pops), Stephenville Crossing, NL; Eugene Spearns, Burin, NL; Angela Train (Gordon), Saint John, NB; Shirley Penney (Gary), Corner Brook, NL; Marilyn Pincock (Doug), Halifax, NS; Eileen Norman (John), St. Lawrence, NL; Mildred Spearns, Halifax, NS; Jerome Spearns Junior (Lisa), Little St. Lawrence, NL; Guy Spearns (Cora), Victoria, BC; Bob Spearns (Kelli), Burin, NL; and Kim Spearns (Rob), Timberlea, NS; sister, Eileen Watt, White Rock, BC; brothers, Rene (Carol) Hynes, Labrador City, and Guy (Barbara) Hynes, St. Bernard's; 24 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren not to mention a large circle of extended family and friends. He was predeceased by wife Mildred Spearns; infant son, John; daughter Geraldine Slaney; his parents & stepfather Sylvester Hynes; brother Leon Hynes, and sisters Mary Slaney and Dorothy Lundrigan.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers and friends who supported Jerome over the last five years. Your generosity and care made the difficult years after Mildred's passing easier.
The Spearns Family will be accepting visitors at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in St. Lawrence on Friday, February 23rd from 6 pm to 9 pm, Saturday and Sunday all day. Funeral Service will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in St. Lawrence on Monday, February 26th, at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Mt. Cecilia Roman Catholic Cemetery in St. Lawrence.
In Jerome's memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

THORNHILL, HOWARD
Howard passed away peacefully on February 5, 2018 surrounded by his family after living courageously with Alzheimer's for many years. Howard was born on October 11, 1936 in Frenchman's Cove, Fortune Bay, Newfoundland. He was pre-deceased by his sister Roseanne, his son Malcolm and his parents Jenny and Robert Thornhill. Howard is survived by his soul mate Sheila Bourgeois, his five children: Kathy, Geoff, Terry, Tracey, Giselle, as well as Sheila's children, Duane, Deann and Dana. Howard is also survived by his brothers Art (Valerie), Larry (Sandy), sister, Roeann (Aubrey), many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Howard was a very proud Newfoundlander who loved his home. He was a plumber/pipefitter by trade and his work took him to many places across Canada where he formed life long friendships. His mother taught him to be self-reliant and Howard could bake a lemon meringue pie, raisin buns and potato pork cakes or darn a pair of socks. He was a jack of all trades and was often called on to help neighbours who needed work done. He could build or fix just about anything and always took pride in his work by doing it right the first time. Howard was a very patient man and Sheila jokingly attested to that by saying "he lived with me all these years" Howard enjoyed a great game of hockey, playing his harmonica and accordion, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. His smile would light up a room and in his last years he was often referred to as the "smiling gentleman". His sense of humour and his one liner come- backs were a part of his charm. He loved to dance and his 80th birthday was spent with his family and friends laughing, dancing and singing to Sheila's uncle, Don Hibb's music. Howard will be missed by all of the people whose lives he touched throughout the years. A service and a celebration of the wonderful man he was will be held this summer in Grand Bank, Nfld. Many thanks to the staff at Fairview Mennonite Home who work tirelessly caring for the seniors in our community. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice
