FRANCIS, WAYNE
(1977-2024)

A lover of stories, Wayne's began in the town of Burin, Newfoundland, a place that stayed close to his heart throughout his life. His childhood was marked by the love and closeness of a large circle of family and friends. From spotlight to snow forts, many hours were spent playing on the meadow. Trouting in the country with his father and brother was tradition. Wayne excelled as a multi-sport athlete, particularly in soccer and hockey. Wayne won many championships and awards, including Provincial High School Male Athlete of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador, and MVP of the Atlantic Canadian Soccer Championship.
In 2024, Wayne was inducted into the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame. Most importantly to Wayne, he made life-long friends and memories as a Berney Breaker, Burin Eagle, Marystown Mariner, and captain of the Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games Soccer Team. Wayne also stood out as a student. After graduating from Father Berney Memorial High School, he attended St. Francis Xavier University as an Oland Scholar. There he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (Honours). He was also team captain of the varsity soccer X-Men and recognized nationally as a Canadian all-star. Wayne earned distinction as an Academic All-Canadian for his performance both on the field and in the classroom. After graduating from STFX, Wayne pursued law school as a Lord Beaverbrook Scholar at the University of New Brunswick. He finished his varsity soccer career as an Atlantic Canadian all-star at UNB, leading the team to an appearance at the national championship. Wayne also played with Halifax Dunbrack and Halifax City soccer clubs, winning six provincial titles and having many fun times along the way. After law school, Wayne articled in Halifax with Cox Hanson O'Reilly Matheson (now Cox & Palmer), and was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2003. A few years later, Wayne moved to the Halifax firm now known as Ritch Williams & Richards, where he specialized in the areas of insurance defence and subrogation. Wayne was a skilled litigator who successfully appeared before all levels of Courts in Nova Scotia. He became RWR's Managing Partner in 2021, and was committed to helping the firm grow as a business and a team.
Wayne loved adventures and making new memories. Along with Norma Snow, his wife and partner of more than 20 years, they explored both far afield and closer to home, often joined by friends and family. Some of their adventures included trips to Bali, Italy, France, and Amsterdam. They equally loved exploring Atlantic Canada. Wayne and Norma also enjoyed bringing family and friends together, whether it be a murder mystery or family game night, often hosted at their Dartmouth home. Wayne and Norma's love for each other was easily identified by those around them. All of Wayne and Norma's adventures had a soundtrack - curated by Wayne, reflecting his deep appreciation for music. He enjoyed playing guitar and was known to tell stories through song. Sometimes he would even sing them.
Like his father, Wayne was always one of the last ones at a gathering, telling stories and enjoying comradery. Wayne played a mean game of Scrabble and a shrewd hand of poker. He and his sister exchanged many a book recommendation. He spent countless hours researching his family tree, which often involved intricate discussions with his mother. Wayne steadfastly supported his favourite sports teams, most notably Liverpool FC, the Halifax Wanderers, and the Montreal Canadiens. All who knew him recognized his debating skills (although those closest to him sometimes called it arguing).
Wayne passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on December 13, 2024, nearly a year after a cancer diagnosis. In that year, he taught those around him to make new memories, cherish your loved ones, and enjoy the little comforts in life. Wayne will be deeply missed by many, including his: wife, Norma Snow, and their Yorkshire Terrier, Lucy; mother, Mary Francis; sister, Lori Francis (Brian Pardy); brother, Brian Francis (Chrissie Henderson); mother- and father-in-law, Shirley and Noah Snow; sisters-in-law, Barb Snow (Jimmy Wall) and Nancy Matthews (Greg); and six nephews, Lennox and Ray Francis, Owen and Sean Pardy, and Tyler and Ryan Matthews. Also left to mourn are his uncles and aunts: Kevin Lundrigan (Ella Appleby); Leo Lundrigan; Keith & Mary Lundrigan; Sheila Lundrigan; Bernice & Don Hollett; and Pauline & Terry Walsh. Wayne is fondly remembered by a large circle of extended family, friends, colleagues, and teammates. Wayne was predeceased by his: father, Ben Francis; grandparents, Elizabeth & Robert Lundrigan, and Sarah Francis; aunts, Mary Lundrigan and Jean Butler; and Uncle Eugene Lundrigan. As Wayne wished, a memorial scholarship for student athletes with connections to the Burin Peninsula has been established. Donations to this scholarship can be made at: https://cfnl.ca/cfnl-funds/wayne-francis/  A celebration of Wayne's life will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 6pm to 9pm at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. An additional event in Wayne's memory will be held back home in Burin, Newfoundland and Labrador, at a later date.

HAPGOOD, EMILY
It is with great sadness that the family of Emily Hapgood of Frenchmen's Cove announces her passing at Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on December 13th, 2024 at the age of 83 years. Emily's family was her passion she loved her two daughters dearly but when her grandsons came along they were her world. Then her darling great grandson made her world complete.
Emily loved to quilt and made a quilt for all her family before she got sick and couldn't sew anymore. She was faithful and was dedicated to her church. She volunteered for any event from cooking baked goods to making soup. Emily and her friend Madonna was a strong supporter of her town. They enjoyed doing everything together and were true lifelong friends. Every Sunday she cooked Jigg's Dinner for her family and if anyone needed a cake they knew Emily could be counted on. She was a very social lady she loved her weekly outings to Marystown for her ice cream and Smoothie.
Christmas was her favourite time of year. Her house was decorated from the porch right to the bedroom. Every nook and cranny was filled with decorations. It had to be nice, her husband Ernest done the decorating but she told him if it looked good and if not it had to be changed right away. She loved to help people and was a true giver right from the bottom of her heart. She was so scared of thunder and lightning storms and could be heard all over the house saying her prayers.
Emily moved from her home in Frenchmen's Cove to the Senior's Home in Grand Bank four and a half years ago. She only went there for a month but loved it so much she decided to stay. She was so happy there and the staff and residents became her second family. She was a social butterfly there always checking her calendar to make sure she knew beforehand what events were going to take place. She had to make sure Val had her outfit ready and her room decorated for the occasion. She loved to celebrate every occasion in her dress and her living space too. The staff couldn't wait to see what she would have done for the occasion. Her second love was Elvis she dearly loved him. Anything with Elvis on it she wanted it and got it too.
Emily will live on in her families and friends memories she was everything to so many people. Words cannot express who she was . She was the whole package of life wrapped up in a small bundle but a huge personality and a heart of gold. She is irreplaceable and never will be forgotten. Most of all let her kindness and big heart live on in your actions and love for mankind.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughter Val (Mike) of Grand Bank; grandchildren Cameron, Austin (Shania) and Eric (Taylor); great grandson Oakley; sisters Rowena Crocker (Wesley); brothers Ben Grandy (Janice) and Terry Grandy (Lesa); sister-in-law Daphne Grandy plus a large circle of other family and friends. Predeceased by husband Ernest and infant baby boy; daughter Rowena; brother Spencer Grandy; sister Albertha Power; brother-in-law Kevin Power; parents Johnny Martin and Almeta Grandy and parents-in-law Susanna and John Hapgood.

Throughout his struggle, Gail was by his side, offering unwavering support, a light in the darkness. Their fight together stands as a testament to their shared strength, love, and determination. His partner Gail, sons and grandchildren were his everything. He was our EVERYTHING! We will miss him and wish he were here so he could give us a hug and say it's going to be ok. He had a way of making people feel better and not worry and that is what made him so special to us. He loved driving his rig for 38 years, he always had a smile on his face. Melvin was always up for a joke and good laugh until the end. Because of him always telling me things will be ok, it will really help us get through life without him. Mom was born into a very loving family and carried that tradition on when her and dad raised 10 children. She always put us first no matter the situation. At the age of 18 she went to St. John's to work as a house maid. She worked with several families, we grew up hearing all the stories. The good ones and the not so good ones. We all loved hearing her stories of her childhood, the love and affection. Mom was a care giver all her life, from helping with her siblings to caring for her mother in law (mudder) who passed away in her arms, she cared for dad until the day he passed away. Mom suffered with dementia, some days were so funny and some days were so sad. Many thanks to mom's homecare workers, especially her two caring angels Rozy Denty and Laurie Pardy, who have cared and loved mom for 5 years. A very special thanks to Reg and Marilyn for the years of dedication and love you gave to mom.
