CLEMENTS, GEORGE
August 29th, 1943- December 20th, 2023.
It is with deep sadness that the family of George Thomas Clements announce his peaceful passing on December 20th, 2023. Predeceased by his brother Lloyd Clements; daughter-in-law Debbie Clements; sister-in-law Brenda Mouland; and brother-in-law Wallace Bungay. George leaves with loving memories his wife and lifelong best friend Bernice; his two children Ken and Lisa Ricketts (Dale); grandchildren Kendsey (Chris) and Daley Ricketts; brother Max (Stella), sisters Effie Parsons (Pete), Jean Hillier (Sam) and Susanne Bungay; brother-in-law Ken Mouland and sister-in-law Donna. He will also be fondly remembered by many cherished nieces and nephews, along with his close friends, former students and coworkers at the local community college, and many members of the greater Bonavista community. George's kind and selfless nature was most clearly demonstrated in his commitment to the town of Bonavista, to which his volunteer contributions had a profound impact that will serve as an enduring part of his legacy. Although originally from Grand Bank, George was a proud Bonavistonian, having arrived as a sixteen year old to begin his career as a high school teacher. It was with this pride that George devoted over 40 years to various positions as a volunteer for the betterment of the community as a whole. A passionate advocate for the provision of healthcare for the citizens of Bonavista. George served as an executive member of various health committees for 26 years. This included time spent with the Bonavista Primary Health Council; serving as the vice-chair for the Peninsula Health Care Corporation; and his tireless campaign for the creation of a new hospital during his time as chair of the Bonavista Hospital Building Committee. His enthusiasm for the town of Bonavista also extended to the promotion of local culture and tradition. George was the founding member of the Bonavista Chamber of Commerce, and he acted as the Chair of the Vista '97 celebrations, a province- wide commemoration of the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's landing in Newfoundland. In his role as Chair, he proudly served as the liaison between Newfoundland and Buckingham Palace, as the celebrations included a visit from Their Majesties Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. George's engagement with community service also involved a lifetime of contributions to the Bonavista Lion's Club. He was also a longstanding supporter of innumerable charities and non-profit groups, including the Bonavista Peninsula Inter Faith Seniors Foundation, the Bonavista Boy Scouts, the Bonavista Rural Development Association, and the Vista Family Resource Centre. George served out of love for his community and did so with humility and kindness. However, his efforts did not go unnoticed. In 2001, Lieutenant- Governor A.M. House presented George with the Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Medal on behalf of the Province. He was further honoured for a lifetime of service by Lieutenant- Governor Judy Foote in 2020, when he was awarded the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers in appreciation of his efforts to improve the well-being and cultural vibrancy of the region.
Although he had many roles, accomplishments and accolades, the titles that meant the most to him were husband, father, and grandfather. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the empathy and compassion that George received from everyone at the Protective Care Unit and Golden Heights Manor. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Strathie's Funeral Home on Saturday, December 23rd from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm as well as Sunday, December 24th from 10:00am-12:00pm. MARSH, CLAUDE L.
Passed away on December 16, 2023 at the age of 88, Claude L. Marsh who was born on August 27, 1935 to Ethel and Ernest Marsh of Fortune, NL. Claude married Elsie Hickman on November 20, 1959 and together they raised two girls, Marilyn and Glenda. Claude and Elsie were always on the go! Between Sunday night Salvation Army services, the Home League and Men's Service Club, Claude and Elsie visited friends for toast and tea every night of the week. His grandchildren all knew that if they need a ride home at night, they had to catch Pop before 8:00pm to let him know. Aside from their nightly visits around Grand Bank and Fortune, Claude and Elsie spent years pulling their trailer all over Newfoundland with Marilyn and Glenda, and later, Pam and Robin in tow. In their later years, they made yearly visits to Ontario and Nova Scotia to visit the apple of their eyes, their first great-grandchild, Owen D. They also enjoyed many weekends at their cabin in Fraggle Rock, surrounded by many good friends and often times, their grandchildren. They lived a full, busy life together for all 53 years of their marriage. We are confident in saying that Claude, our Dad and our Poppy Marsh, was the best Dad and Poppy to ever live. His dedication to all of us never wavered, and we all knew we could count on him for anything and everything. What was his was ours, and he made sure all of us were looked after in every way. We all knew that no matter what the situation, Pop was always just a phone call away. He was the definition of unconditional love. Claude is survived by his daughters, Marilyn and Glenda (Clarence); granddaughters, Pam (Allan), Robin (Jeff), Cindy (Nathan); grandson, Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Owen, Delaney, Nash, Leah; siblings, Nellie Morey, Hazel Purchase (Les), Jim Marsh (Shelia), Nellie Mugford (Wayne); plus a large circle of extended family and friends. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on December 26, 2023, of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and sister, Jackie Mullett (nee Slaney) The loss we feel of her sudden passing is insurmountable. (no age given) Jackie was the most loving thoughtful human being. She was known for her love of cooking. She catered weddings, opened her own restaurant which she affectionately named after her Mom, "Aunt Deesie's Diner" and delivered food to many families over the years who lost loved ones. Jackie was the first one on their doorstep with something she cooked or baked for the family. It wasn't unusual to leave her house with a batch of cookies she baked or some leftovers from a meal she cooked. Cooking was her passion and something she enjoyed sharing with others. Jackie was an active member in the Liberal Association for many years having been the Campaign Manager for Mary Hodder's successful campaign which had the highest vote in the province at that time. She was president of the Liberal Association and ran as a candidate herself in 2011. Her love of politics was evident from an early age and her contributions didn't go unnoticed. Jackie served on the Provincial Darts association for 34 years acting in many capacities. She served as Financial Director, Membership Director and 1st Vice President. She travelled the country through her involvement with darts and has so many great friends she met from her involvement with the organization.
