Burin Peninsula Obituaries
April 2016

The area includes from Terrenceville on down to Grand Bank, over to Lamaline, St. Lawrence, Burin, Marystown and down the Peninsula again to Boat Harbour. All the communities are not named but serves the whole of the Peninsula.

 

ANSTEY, PETER J.
(1938-2016)
It is with great sadness that the family of the late PETER ANSTEY of Burin announces his passing at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre in Burin, on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the age of 77. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Tryphina of 52 years; sons, Terry Anstey (Beverley) of Creston South and Albert Anstey (Marjorie) of Burin; daughter, Norma Kilfoy (Edmund) of Marystown; sisters, Carrie Walsh of Marystown, Kathleen Grenning of St. John's, Harriett (Leo) Mahon of St. John's, Celesta (Ed) Mitchell of Marystown; brothers, Albert (Patsy) Anstey of St. John's, Ben Anstey (Katrina Stack) of St. John's and Jack Anstey of Marystown; 5 grandchildren, Nicole (Chad) Mercer, Michael Anstey, Albert Anstey, Chad Anstey and Kristen Anstey; 1 great-grandson, Kaden Mercer; plus a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by parents Mary and Albert Anstey; brother, Norman (Louise) Myles; sister, Margaret (Bernard) Yetman. Resting and visitation will take place from Wiseman's Funeral Home in Salt Pond, Burin, on Thursday, April 14, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, April 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Burin, on Saturday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Cemetery in Frenchman's Cove. CROWLEY, Josephine Isabel Gladys (White)
(April 3, 1934 - April 3, 2016)
Josephine Isabel Gladys (White) Crowley
was promoted to glory in the presence of her family on her 82nd birthday April 3, 2016. Josephine was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend. Predeceased by husband Edward Wilson Crowley; and survived by and leaving to mourn: her children - Lisa (Frank) of St. John's, Barry (Rosalind) of Grand Bank, David (Connie) of Fort MacMurray, Audrey (Bill) of Ottawa, Doreen of Paradise and Rex (Emily) of Grand Bank; her grand children (Jared, Lauren, Rebecca, Tanisha, Matthew, Holly, Jeffrey, Tonia, Angela, Shawn, Melodie, Stephanie), and great grand children, her sister Grace Anderson of London, sister-in-law Blanche Crowley of Grand Bank and special friend Lee of St. John's. Josephine was born in London Ontario April 3, 1934 and moved to Grand Bank with the love of her life Wilson in 1952. Josephine spent most of her adult life in Grand Bank, moving to St. John's in 2003. Josephine was a talented artist, a witty story teller, a kind and compassionate friend and neighbour and an extraordinary mother and grandmother. Her love for her family transcended her own needs as her sacrifice for them knew no end. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who were blessed to know her. Josephine remains resting at Warren's Funeral Home, Grand Bank, on Monday April 4, 2016 from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm (Family only). Public visitation will take place on Tuesday April 5th from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm, 7:00 pm -9:00 pm, and then again on Wednesday April 6th 2:00 pm-4:0 0pm, and 7:00 pm- 9:00 pm. Funeral Service will take place on Thursday April 7, 2016 at 2:00 pm from the Salvation Army Citadel, Grand Bank. Interment to follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Grand Bank. HODDER, MAURICE L.
(1946-2016)

It is with great sadness that the family of the late MAURICE HODDER of St. Bernard's announces his passing at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the age of 69. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Lucy of 40 years; sons, Maurice (Mary Jill) of Nova Scotia and Tommy (Kelli) of Fort McMurray, AB; daughter, Pamela Hodder (Glen Fewer) of St. Bernard's; sisters, Margaret Fewer of St. John's and Marie Collins (Tom) of CBS; brothers, Edward (Dot) Hodder of St. Bernard's, Doug (Biney) Hodder of St. Bernard's and Kevin (Elizabeth) Hodder of St. Bernard's; 9 grandchildren, Dominic, Meredith, Brandon, Brooke, Brady, Jacob, Jayda, Ethan and Cohen; plus a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Juanita Hodder; brother, Walter Hodder. Resting and visitation will take place from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in St. Bernard's on Saturday, April 16, all day and Sunday, April 17, all day; from where the Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, April 18, at 11:00 a.m. The Vigil Service will take place on Sunday, April 17, at 7:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery in St. Bernard's. It is with great sadness that the family of the late BRENDA LAKE of Fortune announces her passing at the Grand Bank Health Care Centre in Grand Bank, on Friday, April 15, 2016, at the age of 48. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are husband, Donald Lake of 25 years; daughter, Jennifer Lake (partner, Matthew Anstey) of Grand Bank; mother, Martha Moores of Fortune; sisters, Lorena Stacey (Albert) of Fortune, Tammy Mullins (Terry) of Fortune and Trina Slaney (Greg) of Goulds; brother, Craig Moores (Lisa) of Milton, ON; plus a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Moores. Resting and visitation will take place from Wiseman's Funeral Home in Fortune on Friday, April 15, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 9:00. Passed away at the Blue Crest Nursing Home, Grand Bank on Tuesday April 19, 2016 Mildred H. Loveless of Grand Bank, age 85 years. Predeceased by parent; Absalom, and Mary Ann Dodge. Leaving to mourn with loving memories of 59 years her husband; Willis, 1 son; Wayne of New Brunswick, 2 daughters; Ruth (Bert), of Grand Bank, Terri Ann (Jeff), of St. John's. 1 grandson; Bradley, and 1 sister; Lily (Harold) of St. Catherine's Ontario. Plus a large circle of other relatives and friends. Remains resting at Warren's Funeral Home, Grand Bank on Tuesday April 19. 2016 from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm (Family Only). Predeceased by husband Leo Sr. Ryan, sisters Mary Antle, Julie Philips and Agnes French, brothers Bob Brake, Jack Brake and Clar Brake. Resting at Serenity Funeral Home, Burin on Wednesday from 7-9 PM family only; Thursday From 10 AM-4 PM & 7-9 PM. Funeral mass to take place from St. Patrick's Parish Church, Burin on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 10 AM with interment following at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fox Cove. (May 16, 1925 - April 26, 2016)

Passed away at Blue Crest Nursing Home, Grand Bank on Tuesday April 26, 2016 Beatrice Louisa Stone, of Fortune age 90 Years. Predeceased by husband James Stone, parents; George and Suzanna Cake, infant sisters; Almilda, and Pearl, granddaughter Crystal Alma Stone. Leaving to mourn; 2 daughters; Mary (Wilson) Hickman, Eva (Lester) Hartling, 3 sons; Bert (Angela) Stone, Don (Donna) Stone, and Harold (June) Stone. 10 grandchildren; Jeffrey, Robert, Jason, Christopher, Heather, Rick, Crystal, Amanda, Amy, and Michael. 9 great grandchildren. 1 special sister-in-law; Jessie Green. Plus a large circle of other relatives and friends. Remains resting at All Saints Anglican Church, Fortune April 27, 2016 From 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm (family only). Public visitation from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm, and again on Thursday April 28th from 2:00 pm- 4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. Funeral Service to be held on Friday April 29, 2014 at 2:00 pm, from All Saint's Anglican Church, Fortune. Interment to follow at All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Fortune. No flowers by request of the family, donations in Beatrice's memory may be to All Saints Anglican Cemetery Fund, Fortune. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Warren's Funeral Home, Grand Bank. Beatrice's greatest happiness was when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also valued her many friendships in the community. Beatrice was very active with the ACW, and the Senior's Club.

THORNHILL, William T.
(July 23, 1934 - April 19, 2016)

Passed away at his residence on Tuesday April 19, 2016, William T. Thornhill of Grand Bank, age 81 years. Predeceased by wife; Georgie. Leaving to mourn; 2 sons; Rick of Halifax, Dean (Debbie) of Grand Bank, and 1 daughter Katrina (Alex) of Halifax. Plus a large circle of other relatives and friends. Remains resting at Warren's Funeral Home, Grand Bank at a date and time to be announced. Funeral Service to be held at the Grand Bank United Church at a time and date to be announced. Interment to follow at the Grand Bank, United Church Cemetery. No Flowers by request of the family, donations in William's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. WELSH, BRIAN
May 18, 1971 - April 14, 2016

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Brian Welsh on April 14, 2016, at age 44. He was born and raised in Grand Bank, Newfoundland and attended college in St.John's. In 1995 he relocated to Kelowna, BC, and eventually settled in Grande Prairie, Alberta, in 2014. Brian will always be remembered for his infectious smile and laugh, his loving nature, and his huge heart. He leaves treasured memories with his best friend and partner, Leanne Clare (Grande Prairie, Alberta); his sons Taylor and Matthew Welsh (Kelowna, British Columbia); his parents Bill and Hannah Welsh (Marystown, Newfoundland); aunts, uncles and cousins in British Columbia, Alberta and Newfoundland; and many friends, including his furry friend Duncan.
Brian was an avid sports fan. He had a special passion for soccer and hockey, both of which he played at competitive levels. He was a valued teammate, and always had his teammates' backs. This was so characteristic of him, as he always did his best to look out for those who were dear to him.

WHITE, Edith Bell
(December 21, 1929 - April 10, 2016)

Passed peacefully away on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the Grand Bank Retirement Centre, Edith Bell (Forsey) White, age 86 years, of Grand Bank. Predeceased by her parents John and Eliza (Bungay) Forsey, her brother Harvey Forsey, and her great granddaughter Annabelle Barbour. Leaving to mourn daughter Meta (Lloyd) Day, son John (Gussie) White, daughter Doreen (Derek) Barbour, son Derrick (Gloria) White, sister Hannah (Gerry) Leahy, grandchildren: Michael, Billy, Dennis, David, Michelle (Brent), Denise (Charlie), Todd (Stacey), Neil and Samuel, and great granddaughter Katie. Also sister in law Janie Forsey, and special family members Floris White, Fred (Maxine) White and Effie (Ralph) Spears, and a long list of dear friends and colleagues. Edith ("Edie Bell") was famous for her knitting and worked for most of her life at the Grand Bank Cottage Hospital in various capacities. She was an active member of the United Church of Grand Bank as a long time member of the Senior Choir, and the UCW. During her years living in St. John's her church involvement was shared between the Salvation Army Citadel, the Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle and George Street United Church. During her life she was blessed with the strength and health to care for others, and during her brief and peaceful illness she was rewarded equally in return. As a family we wish to extends our sincerest thanks and appreciation to the management and staff of the Grand Bank Retirement Centre and Dr. Beckley for their exceptional care, kindness and accommodation. Visitation is available at Warren's Funeral Home in Grand Bank, on Monday April 11, 2016 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, and again on Tuesday, April 12th from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at Grand Bank United Church, on Wednesday April 13, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Interment to follow at the Grand Bank United Church Cemetery.
