Myrtle Agnes Alvarez - 90
, of Vero Beach, Florida, died November 14, 2002 at Hospice House, Vero Beach, FL. Born January 5, 1912 in Chelsea, MA. she spent her childhood growing up in her beloved Newfoundland, Canada. Married to Frederick W. Alvarez, Sr., for over 60 years, she raised her three children in Melrose, MA. Her love of teaching was fulfilled as founder of the Merry-Go-Round Nursery School. They retired to Florida in 1981. She was a member of the Lakewood Park Methodist Church where she was a volunteer of the Mustard Seed and a member of the Helping Hands.

Survivors include her son, Frederick William Alvarez, Jr. of Gloucester, MA, her daughters, Janice Libby Alvarez of Vero Beach, FL, Diana Maria Alvarez of North Bethesda, MD; her sister, Ethel F. Nolan of Vero Beach, FL, 2 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: VNA Hospice House, 901 37th St, Vero Beach, FL. 32960. COFFEN, Dr. David L.

Coffen, Dr. David L. Age 63
, died Dec 18, 2002 after a valiant effort to survive colon cancer. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Charlotte; a daughter, Kirsten; son, Charles, and grandson Alexander as well as three brothers, Robert, Angus, and Bill.

Dr. Coffen was born March 2, 1939 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following a year as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland, he joined the faculty of the University of Colorado as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. In 1971, he joined the Research and Development Department at Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., Nutley, NJ. He retired from Hoffmann-LaRoche in 1995 as Vice President, Molecular Sciences. That same year he joined ArQule, Inc. Medford, MA, as Senior Vice President of Chemistry. In 1998, he joined Discovery Partners International, La Jolla, CA as Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of Chemistry for ChemRx. Dr. Coffen received numerous academic and professional honors throughout his career, served on many national chemical research advisory boards, and was the author or more than 100 papers, patents, monographs and book chapters. His areas of expertise were synthetic organic and process chemistry and its application to pharmaceutical products. He contributed to the discovery of numerous drugs for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases including HIV, anxiety and panic disorders, arthritis, hepatitis C, anesthesia medications, and the commercial synthesis of numerous vitamins. He was a visiting professor and guest lecturer at numerous universities throughout the United States. David's professional dedication was surpassed only by his commitment to his family and friends. For 24 years he resided in Glen Ridge, NJ where he enthusiastically participated in activities with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family, who dearly loved him, and those whose lives he touched.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 2, 2003 at the El Camino Memorial Park, Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Dept of Chemistry, University of Toronto. Donations should be designated "in memory of David L. Coffen" and sent to Gary Kaufman, Treasurer, the Associates of the University of Toronto, Inc, 810 Seventh Av, 10th flr, NY, NY 10019. Internment with a Memorial Service will be in the Garden of Memory, Glen Ridge Congregational Church, Glen Ridge, NJ in April. Saydie M. (Flynn) Hatfield
, a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away at the Melrose/Wakefield Hospital on Saturday, August 24, after a long illness. She was 92 years of age. Born in Carmenville, Newfoundland, Canada; Saydie was the daughter of the late Willis, and the late Mary (Ellsworth) Flynn; and the wife of Wellington "Bob" Hatfield. Mrs. Hatfield was raised in Woburn, and graduated from Woburn High School. For many years, she and her husband ran Hatfield´s Seafood on Main St. in Woburn. Saydie was an active member of the United Methodist Church, and Past President of the Church Womens Club. Most recently she had been residing at the 59 Campbell Street Apartments in Woburn. She was a loving mother, and very devoted to her family.

In addition to her husband, Wellington "Bob" Hatfield, she is survived by three sons, Jack Hatfield of Rye Beach, NH; Ron Hatfield of Haverhill; and Doug Hatfield of Hudson, NH; four daughters, Audrey Mosher of Salem, NH; Bonnie Spear of Kittery Point, ME; Judi Hanley of North Hampton, NH; and Terri Gillis of Marstons Mills; and two sisters, Bonnie Shay of Tewksbury, and Dolly Tulk of Newfoundland, Canada. She is also survived by many grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by one son, the late Robert Hatfield; and one brother, the late Ellis Flynn.
