BRIFFETT, Gladys Mildred -
Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, Gladys Briffett of Glovertown, aged 93 years. Predeceased by her husband, Earl and daughter, Lorraine. Left with fond and loving memories, Abel (Phyllis), Phyllis (John), Kevin, Clifford (Marion), Gerald, Richard (Angela), Eileen (Gerard), Doreen (Roy); twenty grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Rested at Oram's Funeral Home, Glovertown. Services took place at Faith United Church in Glovertown on Saturday, September 5, 2009 with interment at United Cemetery, Glovertown South. GREENING, Harriett Marie -
Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on Thursday, September 3, 2009, Marie Greening of Port Blandford, aged 78 years. Predeceased by husband, Malcolm. Left with fond and loving memories her sister, Alrita Dunphy (Joseph); nieces, Donna Scott (Charles), Darlene Skinner (Douglas), Deanne Pittman (Scott); nephew, Derek Dunphy (Lisa); four great-nieces; two great-nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Rested Alton United Church, Port Blandford. Funeral service took place on September 5th from Alton United Church, Port Blandford with interment at United Cemetery, Port Blandford. Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, on September 5, 2009, Simon Peter Goulding, age 68 years. Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Carrie Goulding; brother, Rueben; sisters, Idelia Keats and Clara Lush. Left with loving memories are his wife, Lizzie; sons, Brian (Hilda), Todd (Jobie), both of Fort McMurray, AB; Thomas (Sue) of Gander, NL, Peter of Montreal; daughters, Pauline (James), Sylvia (David), both of Fort McMurray, AB; brothers, Fred (Ellen) of Gambo, NL, Wilson (Jane) of Toronto, ON; sister, Pearl (Glenn) of Toronto, ON and grandchildren, Brianna, Chantal, Sheldon T., Cathlyn, Karissa, Christopher, Sheldon C. Passed peacefully away at Lakeside Homes, Gander on Saturday, September 5, 2009, Joanna Heffern, aged 77 years of Salvage. Predeceased by parents, William and Mary. Also predeceased by two brothers, James (Shirley), Gerald (Pearl); three sisters, Sylvia, Gertrude (James), Myrtle (Louis). Leaving to mourn husband, Heber Heffern: three sons, Lindsay (Theresa), John, Barry (Donna); two daughters, Patricia (Gordon), Linda (Lester); eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Passed away at his residence in Musgrave Harbor on Sunday, September 6, 2009, Mr. Enos Abbott in his 52nd year. Predeceased by his parents, Dalton and Mamie Abbott and niece, Debbie Abbott. COOK, Gordon K. -
Passed tragically away at Indian Bay on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, Gordon K. Cook, age 63 years of Indian Bay. Predeceased by his parents, Stewart and Beatrice Cook; brother, William; sister, Gertie; sister-in-law, Marie. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his brothers, John (Eunice) of Indian Bay, Ralph of Indian Bay, and Bill (Carrie) of Indian Bay; sisters, Gertie and Maude, both of St. John's. Gordie, as he was affectionately known, was loved very much by all and will be sadly missed in the Town of Indian Bay. GUY, Alva -
Passed away at the Health Sciences Center in St. John's on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, Mrs. Alva Guy of Musgrave Harbor in her 63rd year. Predeceased by her parents, Dorman and Melissa Abbott and three brothers, Willis Abbott, Winston Abbott and Walter Abbott. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are her husband, Newman; five daughters, Dallis (Derrick Snow) of Noggin Cove, Carol-ann (Paul Winter) of Valleyfield, Suzette (Owen Abbott) of Musgrave Hasrbour, Benitha (Patrick Hunt) of Musgrave Harbor and Lorie (Mark Goodyear) of Musgrave Harbor; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Samantha, Dillan, Brandon, James, Justin and Colby and also a large circle of other relatives and friends. KINDEN, Harold (1925-2009) -
Following a lengthy illness, Harold Kinden of Moncton, passed peacefully at home, as were his wishes, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Harold was born in Stagg Harbor, Newfoundland on January 15, 1925, son of the late Ernest and Amelia Kinden. He studied education at Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland and taught school throughout the Province, prior to joining the Canadian Meteorological Service in Gander, NL in 1948 where he served until 1953. He transferred to the Dominion Public weather Office in Halifax, NS and moved to Moncton in 1958 and retired as Officer-in-Charge of the Weather Office there in 1980.
     He was an active member of the Federal Superannuates National Association; Charter member of the Public Service Alliance Canada; past regional Vice-President of the Civil Service Federation; past regional Vice-President of the Canadian Air Services Association; and a past Director of the Dieppe Recreation Council.
     He is survived by his loving wife of almost 57 years, Angela (Chafe), whom he met when Angela went to work at the Gander Weather Office. He is also survived his three daughters, Kathy, Karen and Krista, his four sons, Keith, Paul, Larry and Peter; and his sister-in-laws, Myrtle Kinden, Doris Kinden and Teresa Chafe. He welcomed as his own daughter-in-laws, Ava, Freda, Judy, Becky, Rose and Pam, as well as his son-in-laws, Tom, Stephen, Peter, Terry and Paul. Harold derived great joy from his grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Krista, Jordan, Karleigh, Anthony, Katarina and Jacob, as well as his great-grandchildren, Emma, Kali, Ethan and Kristopher. "Bampie" was their special name for their beloved grandfather and each one has special memories of precious endless hours spent with him. His many nieces and nephews also had a special place in his heart. He treasured the visits, phone calls and letters from dear friends, Gus and Connie Shaw and Vera LeBlanc. Along with his parents, Harold is predeceased by his sisters, Blanche, Mary and Effie; brothers, Harvey, Ralph and Frank; and grandsons, Andrew, Kristopher and Matthew.
     Harold will always be remembered for his wisdom, humour, love and compassion that he embodied every day. He had a great love for the outdoors, particular time spent hunting and fishing at his camp in Elgin. The family will be forever grateful to Dr. J. Park and his staff; Dr. Pam Mansfield; and the staff of Extra Mural Driscoll Unit for their support and compassionate care of Harold during his illness. To the staff at Allcare, we thank you for helping keep him at home with us and a special thank you to Marielle who won his heart and felt like part of the family. He was rested at Fair Haven Funeral Home and funeral service was at St. Bernard's RC Church on Monday, September 14 with Fr. Allison Carroll officiating. It was followed by a reception in the Church Hall. Interment was in Fair Haven Memorial Gardens. Bampie said "Death is the dawn of a new beginning" and he is now "gone fishing" with his beloved Andrew, Kristopher and Matthew on Golden Pond. ANDERSON, Douglas Edward -
58 of Woodville, Kings County, Nova Scotia passed away Saturday, September 12, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, Nova Scotia. Born in Gander, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Douglas John and Margaret (Raper) Anderson. He was a retired Psychologist, having received his doctorate (PhD) from the University of Alberta and received a number of other university degrees. He was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. Douglas was very fitness conscious and loved the outdoors, animals and hard work. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Mucha; a son, Jason (Mikaline), Red Deer, Alberta; a sister, Valerie, Toronto, a brother, Michael (Alice) of Corner Brook, Newfoundland; a grandson, Christian; special friend, Helmut (Marcela) of Calgary; nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. A private family memorial gathering will be held at a later date in the family home. BABSTOCK, Roy W. -
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of W. Roy Babstock, October 10, 1942 to September 14, 2009. Born in St. John's, NL, he grew up in Eastport and Terra Nova. A 30 year career as an educator (teacher, co-ordinator, principal) led him from Milltown, Bai d'Espoir to Wabush, Labrador and also included work in Heart's Content, Clarenville, the Strait of Belle Isle, Springdale, Glenwood and Gander. He leaves two sons, Steven (Nicola), grandson, Gavin; and Peter (Angela). He thanks friend and former wife, Jean (Parsons) and family; special aunts, Nora Penny and Katie Babstock; cousins, Kay, Ray (Evelyn), Bess (Bill), Marg (Cal), Harvey (Shirley), Marie (Frank), Don (Roz), Mac (Lynda), Isabelle (Nick), Shirley (John), John (Darlene), Terry (Elsie) Baxter (Roxanee), Judy (Junior), Ronnie, and special friends too numerous to mention, for their caring, thoughtfulness and affection. Cremation has taken place. At Roy's request there was no church or funeral services. A celebration of his life was held at the Anglican Church Hall in Eastport, NL, September 17, 2009. Passed away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, Willie Hicks of Musgrave Harbour in his 79th year. Predeceased by his parents, Walter and Mary Rebecca Hicks. Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre on September 16, 2009, Augustus Burton, age 87 years. HODDER, Hilda Eva Janes (Goosney) -
Truro, NS and Deer Lake, NL
(1941-2009)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Hilda on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at home surrounded by family, after a courageous and unfaltering battle with a brain tumor. Born in Deer Lake, NL on Nov. 13, 1941, she was the daughter of the late William and Lucy (Organ) Goosney. The ninth of fifteen children, Hilda spent her childhood in Deer Lake until moving to Corner Brook, where she began her career as an RNA, dedicating many years of devoted care. It was there in 1962 she met the love of her life, Walter John Hodder, thus gracing him with 47 years of marriage. Together they built a life and raised five children in Gander, NL. Following retirement, they relocated to Truro, NS where they embarked on the next chapter of life together. She was a loving wife and cherished mother who adored spending time with her family. She always had a story to tell, a laugh to share and wonderful Newfoundland cooking for everyone to enjoy. 'Nan' made the best pea soup and lemon meringue pie in the world. Her door was always open and there was always a place at her table. She consistently remained positive expressing no fear during her battle. Her faith and strong belief in angels, provides us peace knowing her Guardian Angel has carried her to heaven with our Lord.
She is predeceased by siblings, David, Vine, Clifton, Gerald and survived by her loving husband, Johnny, Truro; children, Richard Hodder (Dawn), Mineville, NS, Bill Hodder (Jeff), Mississauga, ON, Sherri Meeks (Colin), Ottawa, ON, Joan King (Jay), Texas and John Hodder (Neil); eleven beautiful grandchildren; awaiting the arrival of her first great-grandchild; three brothers, seven sisters and several nieces and nephews. No words can express the depth of our loss. Many thanks to the VON Pallative care nurse and her doctors for helping us though this difficult and sad time. Memorial service was held at St. Michael's All Angels Church in Deer Lake, NL on September 29. Interment followed at the Anglican Cemetery, Farm Road. Passed peacefully away at the G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on September 27th 2009, Veneta Anstey, age 79 years. Predeceased by two infant sons; parents, Lewis and Eliza Clouter; sisters, Lily Hoskins, Emeline Oldford; sisters-in-law, Viola Ross and Gladys Fudge. Passed peacefully away in Eastport, Monday, September 28, 2009. Left with fond and loving memories wife, Lorraine and brother, Alwyn; daughters, sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. WAY, Gerald -
Passed away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander on Monday, September 28, 2009, Mr. Gerald Way of Musgrave Hasrbour in his 83rd year. Predeceased by his parents, James and Theresa Way; sister, Minnie Pearce; and three brothers, Harold, Guy and Maxwell. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Susie; one son, Wallace Way (Marlene) of Gander, one daughter, Bonnie Way (Glen Collins) of Frederickton; one brother, Noah Way of Musgrave Harbor; one sister, Blanche Tulk of Aspen Cove; four grandchildren, John Goodyear, Tim Goodyear, Mark Way and Sheri Way; one great-grandchildren, Megan Goodyear and also a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service took place on Thursday, October 1st from the United Church in Musgrave Harbor. Interment followed from the United Church Cemetery in Musgrave Harbour with Rev Harry Templeman officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to the Daffodil Place in St. John's. Passed peacefully away at Brookfield Hospital on September 30, 2009, Frances Kean, age 79 years of Pound Cove. Predeceased by her husband, Alexander Kean; parents, Thomas and Mary Parsons; son, Bobby; brothers, William, Pearcy, Jesse, and Samuel; sisters, Annie and Ethel.
