JONES, Marshall Bruce
(January 31, 1926 - October 15, 2015)
Passed peacefully away at his residence in Belleville, Ontario, following a short illness, Marshall Bruce Jones of St John's & Gander, Newfoundland, latterly of Halifax, Nova Scotia. After a brief stint in the Merchant Marines and the RAF, where he obtained his pilot's license, Mr Jones began a life-long career in aviation when he was hired as a pilot for a small outfit which would subsequently become Eastern Provincial Airways, which ultimately became a part of the present-day airline, Air Canada. In the early days, Mr Jones took his bush plane into places where no one had seen an airplane before. He carried out mercy flights, transporting patients from out-port locations to medical facilities inland when no other mode of transport was possible; he brought mail and medical supplies to many outpost communities of Newfoundland and Labrador: he was once dubbed in a news publication as 'A Lindberg of The Horse Islands'. As EPA grew and expanded, so did Mr Jones' career expand within the airline. He became Chief Pilot, progressed on to become Operation's Manager, and retired as Vice President, Flight Operations, in 1979. During his lifetime, Mr Jones pursued a number of interests with great passion. He developed an interest in fly-fishing and spent many years concentrating on the sport, often accompanied by Enid. He had an intrinsic love of the sea and began boating on Gander Lake in the 60's where his boat 'The Porpoise' was a common sight. His boating moved on to the salt water, and his boats 'Cutknife II' and 'Valkyrie' travelled the waters of the St Lawrence, the coast of Newfoundland, and the waters of Nova Scotia. He had a creative soul: he dabbled in oil painting for several years, and was the published author of the book, 'The Little Airline that Could', which he wrote after his retirement. He golfed to keep his wife happy, but tennis was his first love and he pursued the sport well into his 80's. For many years of his career, Mr Jones resided in Gander, Newfoundland. A monument to his contribution to the town was created when a street was named after him in 1993: 'Jones Place'. Mr Jones was pre-deceased by his sisters Marjorie Whiteoak and June Locastro. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife of 66 years, Enid (Stirling), Children: Richard Jones (Deb), and Lesley (Lush) Armstrong (Dan); Grandchildren: Rick Lush, Shelley Lush MacMillan (Shawn), Marshall Jones (Laura), Julie Lush Huxley (Karl), Stirling Jones, and Lauren Lush Oram (Drew); Great-Grandchildren: Carter Lush, Finn MacMillan, Oliver Huxley, Reed MacMillan, Jackson Huxley, Parker Jones, Alexander Oram and Owen Jones; Brother, Bernard; Sister, Ruby Yablon and brother-in-Law, Red; Brother-in-law: Tom Locastro; Brother-in-law: Rex Stirling (Grace). He will be forever remembered, honored and loved by his family and friends. Online condolences may be sent to mbjcondolences@gmail.com
